I have alot of trouble getting this thing to go straight down the runway. Feed in some right rudder as I try to take off and it tends to over correct. Have tightened up tail wheel springs....but seems to take significant right rudder to keep it from going left then I struggle to get control as it fish tales. Any thoughts....I have had cubs in the past but nothing this tough to get off the ground ?

Sounds as if the engine might need more right thrust. I added about a degree of right because it just "looked" as if it needed some more when eyeballing the built-in angles on the firewall, especially for a prop with 8" pitch. Mine (may she RIP) took off dead straight with just a wisp of right rudder.

Also, consider using more expo in the rudder so as not to overcontrol. The rudder on this model is much more effective than its relatively small size (compared to modern 3D rudders) would suggest.

I agree. Check the right thrust. As per you description, the sympthoms are of lack of right thrust.

Most modelers also make the mistake to slam in the throttle stick to get her airborne as quick as possible - any rudder input will most likely be an overcorrection at this point, except if you really put in some expo. If she starts zig-zagging, cut off the power immediately and start over again.

I never put expo on my sticks, real airplanes also don't have it, one must learn to fly the airplane by feeling the controls. This is a scale airplane, it must be flown scale-like.
Advance the throttle in one steady movement, allowing the rudder to become effective as airspeed increases. You'll see how nicely it tracks down the runway, provided everything is aligned properly.
One of my favorite take-offs with my 30% SD is to apply throttle to 75-80%, letting her go all the way down the runway, already in flying position, tail up, wheels still on the ground, just applying a touch of up a few yards short off the runway end, lifting off on the wing as it should be with such a beautiful lady as is the Super Decathlon... if needed I apply the 20% to power her up a little more, just prior to lift off.

Try it...

Marcus

It was a few pages back, here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=6981084

Shame, because it is one of the best looking ARF's on the market. At least I had the opportunity to get some decent photos before the demise.

I sent the Brillelli in for inspection (and modification, to add a crankcase pressure tap) shortly after the incident and still haven't gotten it back yet. Brillelli is a fantastic engine, but delivery time and turnaround time are clearly not strong points...

Bob,
Sorry, I didn't realize that I had already read that...

I know exactly what you felt since my 30% went in also 2 years ago - http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_252861/mpage_115/key_/tm.htm
rebuilt it and am flying it these days with joy.

Also building 4 others under contract, sport scale...here a few pix...

1. Has anyone gone with a DL-50 (or DA-50) on the SD yet? I've seen pics of one with a Brillelli 46, and it is a powerful little engine in it's own right, and within a couple of ounces of the DA/DL engines in weight.

2. Has the issue with the cowls been cleared up?

Jon

Thanks for the advice...the more I think about it I understand why you would say I need to add right thrust....will try that...
Anybody replace the 2 piece landing gear with a 1 piece ? Have part number ??

Had mine out at the field today. I had planned to run a few tanks of fuel though the engine to break it in a little and then have a flight or two without the cowl. So much for that idea, I left the wing tube at home. One of the guys was holding it for me an I see the top right stringer is broke again. They are way too soft. I'm going to peel the covering back again to fixit, but this time I am going to replace it with better material. Other than that the Fuji is all tuned up and ready for the cowl to go on.

Probably don't want to run it without the wings on.....the wings really dampen out any vibrations....tried to run mine with out and decided not to because of the excessive vibrations/

Wow, those look like absolute beauties!

Wish I had time and space to build, or the money to hire a pro like you! The RCGuys SD was the perfect compromise for me.

I was really developing a fondness for the SD. So different from the 3D Yaks and Extras... flying purely with the sticks and starting to figure out the mixes, how to get it to do a great KE with all that cross-coupling. I know it could be done, because I was getting close and I am not that good a pilot. Inverted flight was surprisingly good. Spins very similar to full-scale SD's, at least the ones I found on YouTube.

Well, I'm not exactly a pro but have some experience (30+) years in the hobby, and am building these half-time.

If you guys wish to get pix I can post pix here, even a little off topic since its no RC Guys...

Hi everybody, I've talked to the guys at R/C Guys about what engine to use for the Super Decathlon and they recommeded the Evolution 26GX. I was doing some research and pulled up this forum talking about engines and everyone is using 35 and above, so I was considering the 35 and then I saw that Evolution made the 40GX. I've been keeping up with you all and no one has tried any of the Evolution engines. Out of curiosity has anyone tried an Evolution (not necessarily on this aircraft but in general) and do you have information about it? I also can not find the hp on the 40GX. If anybody can help that would be great. One more thing, I like the Saito FG-36 but I'm wondering if it would be underpowered for this plane. I am a pilot that has to get off the ground fairly quick, but other than that I'm a graceful pilot, general aerobatics no 3D. Thank you for your help.

The Saito 36 flys this plane suprisingly well. It does not leave me wanting more power. It got quite a bit stronger after it was broken in. I'm not sure about how quick it gets off the ground but this plane is not that difficult as far as ground handling. I've never weighed my plane but I'm sure its heavier than a lot of them. I have a smoke pump and 4 batteries in it.

Hope this helps you
