I have to give credit where credit is due. I had known about the belcrank set up from a pevious aircraft but the set up in the picture is from SR BAtteriesI I did it as per the instructions with the exception of the EZ connector and swivels.

I've been flying my N-17 for 2 yrs now and I love it! G-26 for power and balanced fine. Ditto on the decals. Worse ones I ever tried to use. It's an honest airplane with no bad traits that I have found.

Thanks to those of you who are keeping this thread alive. I've gotten a lot of work done on my N17 but haven't posted any pics lately. We've had a recent cold snap here in North Texas and things have been pretty much iced over. That's the unfortunate thing about this part of the country, instead of snow we just get a layer of ice . Ordinarily this wouldn't be so bad but due to the cold weather my basement heater is pulling extra duty keeping the laundryroom from freexing. The basement is pretty chilly but the upside is that 5 min epoxy has a much longer pot life at 50 degrees.
Things I've learned: When installing the interplane struts measure very carefully from the wing centerline when establishing the strut mounting points. Nice parallel struts will result. I used the same distance from centerline for all four wing panels. Don't measure from the wingtips since the plans and rib placement are not symmetrical (Not terribly so but enough to be noticable on something like the struts) Do not measure from the fuselage sides since they are intentionally asymmetrical. For anything requiring a symmetrical or squarely aligned structurework from the centerline of the aircraft unless specified in the instructions. A second thing is that it will take 3 pieces of K&S tubing to make the William's Bro's wheels fit the BUSA axle. If anything this is an opportunity to simulate a scale wheel attachment.
Things I've changed: I went for a bolt on stabilizer similar to the Proctor N28. I used 2-56 blind nuts and screws so that it will be removable for repairs and adjustments and just cause I wanted to. I also added a 3/4 inch long brass strip to the wheel collar that holds the rudder in the hinge tube. This allows me to tie the bottom of the rudder to the hinge. This seems a lot stronger for very little weight gain.
I pretty much have the N17 framed up and will post some pics when it warms up in the basement again.

Regarding the BUSA decals, I have seen posts elsewhere indicating that they may have switched to vinyl decals due to the complaints about the waterslide decals. Does anyone have any info on this?

I have a question for you guys with flying N-17's. My friend built his and it is beautiful. But, he has some down elevator in it for straight and level flight. Not too much, but enough that it's noticable. He tends to balance his airplane more nose heavy than I do but he is within the plans limits on CG. Should the plans have another 1 degree positive in the horizontal stabilizer?

Why don't you try a couple of degrees downthrust in the engine and see if that helps. Bill

Guys,
Sorry to temporarily hijack your thread but I was wondering if any of you know of a BUSA dealer in the USA that would be happy to ship an N.17 kit across the pond to the UK? The UK stockist is not only out of stock but also v. expensive (depends on the trans-atlantic shippings cost I suppose....).

Thanks!

Blue

Will Balsa USA not ship you one?

Go to their web site http://www.balsausa.com They are very nice people to deal with. There is a foreign dealer listing on the main page. I'm sure you can also order one directly.

Balance the plane according to the C.G. shown on the plans and ad 2 degrees more downthrust and one extra degree right than stated. The plane flies great and has no bad tendencies. Elevator will be very close to neutral.

Taildragger & Warbird Man,
Thanks for your replies.

I would have assumed that BUSA would not deal with me direct as they would/should support their UK distributor but it's worth an e-mail

Cheers!
Blue

I placed an order with BUSA today. I'm getting the aluminium cowl. I asked about the decals and the lady taking my order said that they had switched to vinyl (many complaints about the water slide decals). I ordered a set and we'll see how they turn out. I'm still considering a stencil for a stork rather than using the indian for the insignia.
