Well I have almost determined that my tower hobbies engine is damaged after crashing it. IT runs but I get deadsticks and such all the time now. Ive tightened and checked for air leaks and everything with no luck...

SO....

For a trainer and perhaps a 2nd plane such as a four star. WHat engine would you suggest and why? I want it to be semi easy to setup. I dont mind taking the time to set up an engine but I dont want to spend 1/2 the day at the field with the engine....

The Four stars are not fussy about which engine is on them.

A Four Star 60 is rather large in the house but OK at the field.

A four Star 40 will fly fine with any engine from a OS LA40 on up. I like the Saito 56 but if your budget will not stretch that far, go for a OS 46 AX or maybe a Tower 46?

Give a little more details of the engine. Is it in the plane that crashed? It could be that the clunk got stuck in the front of the tank and that is why the engine is quitting.

No No, I demolished my first plane so I bought another one and used the same engine / servos in the new one.

Since the first crash, I haven't been able to get it to run right. I wish I could explain what it is doing but there are so many things it does. Sometimes it dies going from idle to full throttle. Sometimes it dies on full thorttle. Sometimes it dies going from full throttle to idle. And then sometimes it dies in mid air with no change in speed.

The fuel tank and all that stuff is new and I know I got that part right...

Im taking the big parts off the engine now to see if I can find anything wrong and attempt to seal up any air leaks.

Sounds like you are running it too lean?

Hmmm well tomorrow Im gonna try to redo everything from scratch. Just to make sure it is not a lean engine. Im gonna start from square one. I rebuilt the engine tonight and found my airleak possibly (carb was up a bit).

Well, that would cause a lean run. Keep us updated

Also, look for tiny holes in the fuel lines both before and after the remote needle (They can be very hard to find) as well as the location of the fuel tank in the new plane. If it is too low it can cause problems. Good luck

Ive seen two different Tower .46 engines end up with hairline crankcase cracks after crashes. Both ran weird after a crash. Subsequent troubleshooting and careful inspection found the cracks (cracks resulting in tiny air leaks, which varied with engine operating temperature).

Just something to consider if all else is ok with the engine and fuel system.

The ST engines are a good alternative. I am also fond of the TT46 Pro. Both good power plants, not exensive.

Check for dirt in the airbleed hole on the front of the carb. Dirt often plugs the air bleed during a crash. Use a thin wire to clean it out.

I too would check for crap in the fuel train, disassemble the carb barrel and blow it out. Aside for the lean run, it also sounds like an intermitten fuel clog/stoppage.

Good luck,

Chip
