I hear alot about the new OS engines but i can't comment for i'm still flying with the ones that i bought years ago for example i have a OS 61sf that has flying for over 18yrs without any trouble / i do run my engines a little rich but when you say how they cost more think of the extra fuel you use and the time invested in breaking in a new engine and the fact that you can fly a OS out of the box and the long life you get from them to me they are cheap buy 1 OS and fly for years or 3 others in the same time span but this is only me and my thoughts from my experance

I no longer own a Magnum 70 or 91. I traded them to others for OS 70 and 91 engines.

Any particular reason why you made the change? Or was it just an impulse, or perhaps an economic advantage? Sorry for being so nosey. <G>

I like my OS engines (OS 10LA, 40LA, 46LA, 91 4-stroke) but then again, I also like my Saitos, Thunder Tiger and heck, I even like my two SuperTigres! To hear some folks talk on these forums, I swear my standards are too low sometimes.

I came across a new OS 70 Surpass II for $125. So I sold my magnum to a different guy for the same amount. The guy just loves it.

I traded the same guy for his OS 91 Surpass II and he got a Magnum 91 four stroke in exchange plus other considerations.

I hate to trade anything. It seems I always end up wishing I had whatever I traded away back.

I have been in the hobby about 14 years in that time I have run Magnum OS
MDS Saito and Thunder Tiger and also Super Tiger and GMS. IMO the OS and
Thunder Tiger are tops on my list and Magnum is on the bottom.

You may pay a little more for a OS but they do run well, however if the
Thunder Tiger engines were more readly available I would perfer them
over the OS price wise and I think they run just as good although the OS
may last a little longer.

Either that, or maybe you are blessed with the magic ability of being able to run engines?

Just think, with a slight twist of the wrist either way anybody can have that gift and voila, bad engines are good engines.

I've heard the K&B Stallion .35s were scrap engines after fewer than 100 flights. This year I finally wore one out that I bought when I got out of the USAF in 1968' Probably 700 flights in 8 or 9 different planes, including an RC SAM OT job I flew in competition.

I also have a number of OS engines I've been using since the 1960s, and a couple of Fox .15s from about 1958-59. Even a Veco .35 from about 1957.

Secret. Lots of castor oil, and avoid lean runs.

Also seen a number of highly reputed engine burn out in less than a year.

Like quepasa said, how good an engine is depends on who you talk to.

I never wore a control line K&B .35 Stallion engine out because I usually gave them to neighborhood kids when I got tired of the airplane that they were mounted on. But some years later, a friend bought the R/C Stallion and it did wear out fairly quickly. Unfortunately, he found some Blue Max fuel (not Red Max) for sale cheap and used that for the entire summer. The engine was in pathetic condition by half way through the summer. I don't think there was any castor oil in the fuel at all. In fact, I got it on me a few times and felt it between my fingers. There was not much oil in the mix, just judging from that. That poor K&B Stallion .35 used to land and sit there smoking. Pathetic. My friend was like me, you couldn't tell him anything. I'd give anything if he was still alive.

Ed, what's the difference between Red vs. Blue Max fuel?

I was given 2 gal. of Red Max 5% but I don't know what type of oil it has in it...

Darned if I know. I've only seen Blue Max fuel that one time.

I never got a good look at the bottles (Red & Blue) side by side to tell if they were by the same folks.

Blue Max was heavily dyed a deep blue. Naturally, Red Max was dyed red, but not what I would call heavily.

I have ran Red Max fuel with zero problems in the past. In fact, our club bought several drums of Red Max with nary a complaint during its use.

My friend was also new at the hobby. It is possible that he was tuning a bit lean. If the fuel didn't have considerable castor oil, it would have been a terrible choice for a low cost plain bearing engine like the K&B .35 Stallion. What really got me was that the dealer that sold him the engine also sold him two or three gallons of this stuff at the same time for what my friend thought was a good price. How do you tell a disabled friend on SS that he screwed up by buying this junk? I will say that I suspect that the Blue Max fuel would have been okay being ran through a double ball bearing engine. But that is just my guess, not a fact. This was back in 1979 or so. Maybe even 80-81.
