wryman -> JETT FOR DIAMOND DUST (12/13/2006 3:15:39 AM)

BOB, I have been flying another club members Magnum with a West 50 and now I am addicted to speed. I have a Diamond Dust on the way and was wondering what engine size, prop etc.. that you would suggest. The Magnum has a 8*8 apc and is taching 19.300 on the ground. Im not an expert on calculating that into approx. airspeed but I would like have the Dust go faster. Thanks for your help. Wes Ryman

Hi, Thanks for writing...

Any of the SJ-46, 50, 60LX or the FIRE (rear exhaust 46, 50, or 60LX will put a smile on your face :)

Example here only of the 60LX - top of the line "40" size engine.

SJ-60LX - side exhaust - versitile and power full. Engine includes the "gold version" LX tuned muffler. Bolt on - no tuning or anything involved. Can turn a 10x6 prop over 18,000 rpm, and loves the 8.8x8.75 and 8.8x9 props for speed use. Use it in the diamond dust, or any .40 size sport plane of your choosing. Very user friendly, idles great, good transition. Nothing to set up, just break it in as instructed, prop it so it turns in excess of 17,000 peak ground rpm, back it off 600-700 rpm for flight. Use regular 10-15% nitro fuel. Image provided of a typical Sport Jett engine installation. This engine loves the 8.8x8.75 pylon prop, and runs great on the 8.8x9 as well.

FIRE-60LX is the ultimate animal. Same user friendlyness, but with the full pipe you have a narrower rpm band to work with, and prop selection is more important. Pipe costs additional to engine. Dub will tune the pipe for your application, provide the rpm setting, and suggest props to use. Example DD shown here with a 60LX is turning a 8.8x9 APC D-1 series prop at 19,500 peak ground rpm. Again, same standard sport fuel... nothing special.

With either engine, I STRONGLY recommend using a Bubble-Jett or Tetra bubble fuel tank. The plane and engine combinations WILL cause fuel foaming with a conventional tank. Fuel foam will drive you nuts trying to get an engine setting, and WILL toast your engine. Avoid the problem right from the start.... the bubble-free fuel systems do not permit fuel foam to occur.

With the 60LX, use 9" diameter standard blade props, 10" standard props, or the D-1 series 8.75" diameter Q-500 props. Do not use a standard 8" diameter prop - the hubs are too small for the flight loads, and you risk throwing a blade.

Diamond Dust aircraft with FIRE-50 and FIRE-60LX aircraft regularly exceed 170 mph in level flight. Some have reported radar recorded speeds in excess of 190-200 mph, usually out of a dive or with a tail wind.

You will get similar performance with any of the Jett engines. A SJ-46 will keep you smiling too !!

I hope this is helpful

Bob
