Hello all
Welcome to my winter project. I have decided to tackle Glenn Torrance Models Hanriot HD1 this winter. My dream goal is to have it done for Dawn Patrol 2007 in Dayton. This is my first build along that I have posted on line so please bear with me.

This is my first GTM plane kit, I have built his cockpit kit before. I have to say that I’m very impressed with the detail of the kit there is over 1,400 parts that come in the kit. This kit comes with just about everything that you will need to put it together including the scale features like turn buckles.

The plane I plane #6252 belonging to Alessandro Resch of 70a squadriglis.

Well I’m jumping right in and starting to stain and glue. I have the sides together and the headrest and seat done so far. I used ¼ inch foam for the seat and headrest instead of the cotton balls. I was worried that I could not get them in and keep them there while I glue the leather to the back of the seat and head rest. For the sides it’s just your typical lay and pin to the building board over the prints. Glenn doses a great job of calling everything out with part numbers that relate to the BOM. For the other side I just laid the next side over the top and glue, this should produce identical sides.

Looking foward to your build. As you probably already know there was another GTM Hanriot build on this site this past year. Randy did a really good job and the plane is a solid flyer.

Hey Bob
Yes I fallowed Randy’s build along very close and I learned many little things along the way. I going to try to do some of the little extra that Randy did on mine.
I’m looking forward to all the different ideas that I’m going to hear for some of my upcoming questions.

Well today is fuselage day. I had the sides done yesterday and today it’s time to box it all together. I started off with the dashboard and the landing gear mounts. Once the epoxy had dried I then added the top and bottom supports to the fuselage. I did leave the tail open at this point so I can finish it up last and let the epoxy dry over night. I liked putting the remaining formers on from the headrest back to get ride of that box look and start to have it take shape. Last it’s time to close the tail up, there is a lot of force here pulling the tail open so I plan on using 5-minute epoxy to get some extra holding power.

I put the seat together the other day when I did the headrest. I'm using the stain that Glenn calls out in the instructions it’s called Behlen’s Solar-Lux the color is Golden Fruit. I plan on staining the fuselage this color.
The mounting for the seat is pretty simple, two alum tubes running along the side and two wooded dowels running across under the seat. The alum side rails are cut to length and then the ends are pinched. I think I must have been just a little too close for this picture. The alum tubes are then marked and holes are drilled into one side of the tubes for the dowels to slide into. The frame is mounted with four screw & nuts. I will remove the frame later and paint it black to match the cockpit area. Once everything is back in I will glue on the seat itself.

I changed up the side cabling a little. Glenn provides .028 dia braded steel wire, I plan on using .038 dia Kevlar thread. The .038 dia Kevlar has a tensile strength of 130 lbs. That should be a fine replacement for the steel wire. The Kevlar comes in a nice yellow color that will need to be stained black.
I drilled the holes in the side with a .050 dia drill bit using a small finger drill. I used a piece of scrap brass (.010 thk) as a shield so I would not dig into the frame as I angled and flex the drill to go thru the side post and not down into it. I then passed the Kevlar thru the holes and glued it in place after pulling it tight.

The bellcrank is made up two piece of I think fr4. The one on the left is after sanding and the one on the right is right off the laser. These two parts get glued together and then the alum tube gets glued in the center of the of them.
There is a wooded dowel that is cut down and sanded to left the bellcrank slide on easy and rotate freely. I will paint the bellcrank black when I find my black jar of Testors black paint that is not dried rock solid.
The last picture is of the side cables glued in place.

I do love the details. Glenn makes it very ease to fabricate a great looking plane. Al the small touches included in the kit sure speeds things up. What does he provide for a dummy engine?

Bob,
Glenn dose not provide and type of dummy engine. I will have to read thru the remaining 10 install instruction booklets to see if he recommends one to be used. On one of the prints there is an image of the 110h.p. LE Rhone type J engine.

Hi Mark,

I looked and looked for a dummy 110 hp Le Rhone. Unfortunately they are different from the more common 80 hp engine in that the push rods and intakes are behind the cylinders..You could probably modify a Williams bros 80 hp to look like a 110. I used a Mick Reeves Le Rhone kit and modified it to resemble a 110.....Just give Mick a call and he'll ship you one, pretty reasonably priced....get some of his #00 and #000 sheet metal screws while you are at it...I wish someone would make resin castings of rotary engines. They look good and the weight would be welcomed....!!

What engine do you plan on using?

Here are pics of the assembled/modified kit, the nearly complete engine, and a wonderful pic that Reg H sent me...

Randy

The next step is the rear access door. Once again I have the camera too close. All the parts are numbers so it’s really quite simple to grab the right part and put them together. I drilled two holes in the hinge so the glue will flow thru the holes to hold the hinge to the door. On the fuselage I relieved the former where the hinge will sit. This way the fabric will lay flat against the frame. There is a outer frame that will go around the door once the fabric is on.
I have run the stringer down the back of the headrest and top formers. The final thing to do on the fuselage is the add the pilots step. That concludes the first of 11 instruction books that come with the kit. On to the wings for the next step.

Thanks Randy,
I think I will be giving him a call and ordering the kit. I was planning on using a Brison 2.4ci (39cc) engine that I have sitting around, but the engine dose not fit by a ½” so I’m looking for some new options. I don’t really want to cut holes in the cowl to make room for the spark plug pooping out at the bottom. So I’m not sure at this time but at the moment with xmas here I don’t have the cash for a new engine.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Yes, I agonized for a long time about an engine. Went to a couple of hobby shops and measured engines, searched the net....I finally decided that it would have to be a twin, in order to get the right displacement without the overall length. I considered only four stroke glow engines though.....I almost went electric, but that was way too expensive. The OS 160 twin works great. The Magnum 160 twin would be just as good. In some ways the Saito 182 twin would have been better, the exhaust exits straight down from the cylinders so that helps the installation, but the two carbs scared me off.....I think a Moki 1.8 or 2.1 would work fine also. You are dealing with a very short nosed model as you know, so I would have the engine available for fitting before you glue the firewall in.

Good Luck!
Randy

I do agree Randy I need an engine before I get the firewall in place. That is also one reason that I have moved on to the wings so I can get some research time in on a new engine.

Well time to start the main spars on the four wing panels. I looked over the spruce from the kit and it all looks really great. The main spars are “I” beams for the front and rear spars on all four of the wing panels. I have a Great Planes Accu Point long bar (36”) as use for my straight edge. See there is a reason to buy all the toys on the market. On the two on the bottom of the “I” beam pinned to it. I will glue the center part on and let dry.

As I started on the wings I just plugged away and was not thinking of pictures. So let me try to recap. The first picture is two 1/4 thick plywood parts glued together, and then a pre-cut square is placed on them with two small pins to locate them in the correct place. The next picture is looking at it from the other side showing the pin holes and a hole for brass tube that is glued in place. There will be a pin that will slide into the brass tube to hole the top wings in place.

After the two main ribs are done the next step is to place the two “I” beams into the two squares that were put on and slide all the ribs down to there proper place. One of the best things that I like about the kit is the leading edges is made from a round dowel. This is one part that I have never liked is the sanding of the leading and trailing edges.

The next step is to do the ailerons, once again its pretty easy just find the numbered parts and lay them out on the plans and do some gluing. As you can see by the next pictures the parts and the print are all well numbered. Just fallow the directions and you will be fine.

Randy (v2plus10) had a great idea when he did his build along for the control horn. I plan on doing the same. The control horn is built into the aileron which will be a challenge when covering. So I plan to fallow Randy and make a part that will drop in after it is covered.

Thanks Randy

Good to see you back posting. You might also take a look a the Laser 200 V twin for an engine suggestion. I'm going to use that in my Camel which also has a short nose. It sits inverted behind the Mick Reeves Clerget engine kit just fine. Take a look at the picture I uploaded. It's my dummy engine on my partners Camel. (We are building two at the same time). You can just see the Laser engine if you look real close.

Thanks Bob,
I think I found a way to use my engine that I planed on using. The engine that I have is a new Bison 2.4c.i. (39cc). I plan on taking the muffler and reworking it along with fabbing a new front cross brace for the landing gear to mount too. Well at least I’m going to build it up and see if it will work before I start to cut the fuselage apart to adapt the engine.
Back to the build, when I was putting the ailerons together. I noticed that there was a gap at the trailing edge and the ribs. I then noticed that on prints there is a call out for a strip of carbon fiber. The carbine fiber will add a good amount of strength to the trailing edge. Glenn provides a brass hinge that you cut down to the correct size. I cut the hinge down and flatted it out next is to drill a few holes with my finger drill for screw that will hold the hinge on. I plan on making cutout into the wing and ailerons to let the hinges sit flush when the cover is put on.

The first picture is of my helper; he makes sure that any balsa that hits the floor gets a good chewing on.
The ailerons get a filler for strength at the end to keep that balsa and ply from crushing or twisting when bumped or applying fabric. On the trailing edge where the aileron is attached there is a filler added on top and bottom.

I decided to cut out that area where the hinges are placed just to make it a little easier to apply the fabric later on. The hinges will be held in place with screws and epoxy after the final sanding. I’m using small brass nails that Glenn provide in the kit just to align and hold the hinges in place so I can add the outer wing tips. The outer wing tips are built up the same way as the aileron tips are, with a thin ply in the center and balsa glued to the top and bottom. Next is to glue the tips to the wind. This should end up with a nice line that the wing tips and aileron tips will fallow.
