Now to some of the fun stuff. Glenn kit includes some scale items; on both top wings there are two hatches that Glenn has included in the kit. The first is access hatch that is located on the top of the top wing. The location is in front of the servo bay. The hatch is a slip hatch it will be held in place between the two U-shaped parts and secured with two screw on the open end of the U. The first U shape piece is glued onto the wing and the fabric will go over this one. Once the fabric is done the hatch will go on then the final U shaped piece will be screwed into place and painted with the wing.
The second hatch is between the second and third inner ribs. This hatch will be opened and closed with a hinge. The hinge is cut to length and you use the laser cut door to drill the holes in the hinge on both sides. The door is held to the hinge with three nails and epoxy. I will cut the nails down and sand them once the glue is dried.
The next step is to get the mounts on the top and bottom of the front and rear spars. These mounts will have 2-56 screws running thru the wing from top to bottom to hold the wing mounts and struts in place (pictures to come).

Bob,
I love his kits; I have built a few of his mini kits for my SSW D.III nightmare but this is my first full kit from GTM (www.flygtm.com). I love the step-by-step instructions and the detail on the plans is just great. I love building nice clean kits. This and the SR Batteries Eindecker E1 that I have going on right now have been such a nice build. I’m waiting on the E1 is on hold till the Hanriot get to covering stages. The E1 is covered and ready for paint. Going to use it as a test for this one.
I have acquired a 1/4" scale Nieuport that will need some work done to it and a cowl. Dose anyone have any experience with a “Builders Choice Products”? I have prints 1-3 and 2-3 from 1998. Dose anyone know these people or have an idea of what is on page 3 of 3?

Tonight I will start to build the bottom wing. I have the “I” beam together already they are the same as the top wing in construction. I will two take a few more pictures on the bottom wing as I put it together. I try to build the left and the rights at the same time so you may see some pictures from the right side wing and then some from the left; I hope I don’t confuse you much with that.
I would love to hear what you all think of the build so far, any comments or suggestions are always welcomed.

The Photo that I have of the Hanriot HD1 #6252 come from Marek Mincbergr who lives in Prague. You can view his 1/48 models on his web page http://www.mincbergr.net/frames.htm. I tend to review the modelers pages for color schemes that stand out. They tend to have multiple views of there planes to so you get a feel of what it will look like from different angle then just a side view.

I for one think your doing a really good job and you have picked an interesting paint scheme. The Hanriot is a lesser known air craft of WWI but it was pretty decent from what I have read about it. And it's a pretty attractive plane..

The bottom wing is almost the same as the top in the construction. I will try to fill in a few of the gaps that I had on the top wing all the step that I’m showing here were done on the top wings also. The first picture is of the two main center ribs that will be glued together. Glenn lasers a drill line on all of them that will be drilled out later. A 2-56 screw will be run down this line to hold the wings in place. The two sides will be glued together then have a brass tube glued in the holes. The squares will be placed on with the pins locating then on the main ribs. I used a small drill to open up the lines on two of the main ribs I will place these on the inside. Later I will open these holes up for the 2-56 screw. My think is that the small holes will help guide the larger drill thru the main ribs.

The last picture is of Glenn and his build. I’m using it to show how things will be put together later.

The spars on the lower wing have an angle cut into them from the third spar in from the wing tip. The spar will fit into the squares that were glued onto the main ribs. The ribs on the bottom wing are all the same expect for the last two at the wing tips. My low-tech alignment fixture is a brick, a couple of clamps and the main rib will sit right there. Slide the ribs on to the correct position over the plans and then start to line them up. The next is to glue them in place and vertical. For this I use Testors small paint bottles to hole them vertical. The bottles are square and easy to hold together while gluing.

Next step is to add the trailing edge. I use my trusty bricks to hold everything flat to the building board. The trailing edges, there are three of them glued in length to cover the length of the bottom wing side. The leading edge is a dowel that is glued in place. All the ribs have been cut to with a round opening in them so you just pop them dowel in place and glue very little sanding is required to get a nice leading edge. Next step is to make up the wing tips. They are made from one centerpiece that is light ply and two top and bottom pieces that are balsa. The tip is laid in place and them two spars are cut to length. The spars will sit part way into the tips for strength. Next is to place the mounts for the wing struts. There is one placed on the top and bottom of the spar. Later I will drill holes thru the spar for 2-56 bolts to pass thru. The main body of the bottom wings are done I have to add more access similar to the top wing.

I went ahead and added the two access panels and two hinged doors to the top of the wings to finish the building part. There is still the dreaded sanding that needs to be done but that will be done much later since my workshop is a space bedroom and it is too to cold to open the windows.

Forgot to say that the access panel and hinged door are applied that same way as before. I will show more pictures of them once I start to put things together.

Next step is to start the Stabilizer and Elevator build.
The first step is to make the main spar from two 1/8” spruce and one 1/16” thick balsa. The parts go together pretty much the same as the wings. The leading and trailing edges are round dowels. There is a 1/32” carbine fiber rod that runs from one tip to the other tip. The wing tips are again made from three laminated pieces. The centerpiece is made from 1/32” light ply.

Now to build the Elevator, the leaded edges is a dowel and the entire trailing edge is laminated with a 1/32” light ply center and 1/8” balsa on the top and bottom. The two-piece control horn is glued together and them slid onto the leading edge dowel. It is not glued in place at this time. There is a carbon fiber rob running through each side of the elevator that is tucked into the training edge.

This is were you must make sure you have a straight trailing edge on the Stab and a straight leading edge on the elevator. The elevators dowel is the hinging point so make sure its straight. At this time I glued the control horn in place, its must be centered on the dowel and straight.

Hi Mark,

Just a suggestion....When building the elevator I did not glue the elevator control horn in place until I had test fit everything into place on the fuselage and made sure of the placement angle of the horn that would work best. I just left it loose on the dowel. I fact, I don't think I glued it until the model was covered and painted. There is plenty of clearance for the elevator horn if it is positioned correctly, but there is not a lot of extra space in the tail end of the fuselage with the wire and bungee for the tail skid in place...

Great build, keep the pictures coming!!.....if I had the room I'd build another one!!

Next is to place the plywood spacers in place where the six hinges are going. I made up a little fixture to keep everything flat and in line for this step. Once the spacers are in place the brass hinge will be slid over the two dowels. The hinges come bent in a “V” shape they need to be bent into shape and then slid over the leading edge and trailing edge. The hinges are held in place with a 2-56 screws that is drilled though the trailing edge in the stab. I started out with a small 1/32” drill bit and work my way up to the 3/32” that is needed for the screw. The small alum color is glued in place (one on each end) to keep the elevator from sliding back and fourth. The wraps up the building of the stabilizer and elevator.
I will move on to the Rudder and Vertical fin next.

Hey randy I was thinking just that when I went to mount it to the Fuse. But I had already glued it in place three days ago. I do think there will be enough room for the movement. I still have to drill the holes to mount the stab to the fuse but that will be done soon. One thing I wish that Glenn suggested is that on the Fuselage is that to use the main spar on the bottom wing as a guide for drilling the brass tubes that will hold the wing onto the fuse. I will have to go back and slide the tube holes apart about 1/64” to let the wings slide on.

Mark,

Yes I agree. Drilling for those brass tubes was a bear. There is a 1/64 plywood part that is used for sheeting the wing root area on the fuselage, and it has the holes pre-drilled. It would work well for a template but I did not discover that it existed till it was too late. I also had to go back and "adjust" the holes for the brass tubes......

Randy,
Do you think you will be heading out to Dayton for the Dawn Patrol 2007 fly in? I want to talk Glenn in to bringing his HD1 out so we can get a line up of them and take a few pictures.

Hi Mark,

It would be neat to get together at the Dawn Patrol event this year. There is a full scale Hanriot replica being built in Ohio somewhere and last I heard he was hoping to have it ready for the 2007 event.....hope it has an extra seat!!

We are about three days away from Dayton.....thats a long drive.....I won't say no but it is to soon to say yes....

Hey Randy,
Would love to see you try to get out there.

I have been slacking a bit on building. But I have been trying to find a way to stuff my engine into its little hole. I think I’m going to break down and buy a new engine that fits in the little hole. I thinking of using the same engine that Glenn put in his a Roto-25.

I have started to work on the cabane struts. The struts come pre-bent and holes drilled in them for mounting to the fuse and for the dowels to mount the top wings. Glenn provides a plywood center rib to help align everything.
First step is to get things lined up. Once I was happy with the alignment, I marked one hole broke the set up and drilled it out to 1/8. Slide a screw in place and re-assemble for the next hole to drill. So after all eight holes are drilled this is the final result.

Well I could not resist the temptation to do a little assembly to see how things are going to look. I have to say I’m really happy that I didn’t have the firewall in there when doing this step it made quick clamping easy.
