Hey Bob,
Having access to a laser is great. The one I will be using belongs to a friend of mine that started his own sheet metal company. The laser has a 96” x 48” table and 2500 watts. The laser can cut up to 3/16 metal. If you do a little looking in your local neighborhood you will probably fine a precision sheet metal company that has one. Smaller the company the more likely they will let get some time on it.

Ok lets do some catch-up on what’s been going on since I last posted. The hinging of the rudder is the same as the elevator. There is a spacer added on and then a brass hinge will added to hold pressure against the spacer. There are three of these hinges that will hold the rudder to the fin.

The lower hinging post of the fuselage has fiberglass wrapped around the top and bottom runs. There are two o-rings that will keep tension on the tailskid. The two o-rings are held in place by the two spring steel rods. The rods are slightly tucked into the fuselage at the top and bottom then glued in place with epoxy. At the middle area the tail post is notch away to allow the rods to sit in a little. The rods are glued and then wrapped with a Kevlar thread to add a little more strength in that area. The turtle deck is extended onto the stab to the main spar.

Hi Mark,

The gauge faces and needles are from Arizona Models....I think I bought the stock British WWI panel....the aluminum bezels are homemade from annealed litho plate..They were shaped using brass tubing as the form...they have a seam on the sides so the size could be adjusted to fit.

It was this kit that I ordered, 1/4 scale ....

......I think the screws are either small button head screws from the hobby shop or they are some from Mick Reeves...

Every thing on the dash was scratch built. The instrument faces were printed on my computer. Mick Reeves instruments were white with black letters and didn't look right. So I made an inverse of them. The bezels etc are cast using one I made of styrene for the mold.. The other stuff is either cast or brass. The compass is made of wood.

Mark.

I don't know if you are past this point yet, but you mentioned that you will re-work the muffler. Don't forget the Bob C in the club has offered welding services to us members.

nice work, I can't wait to see it fly.

Bob,
Thanks for the info on gauges; I’m still up in the air on what I’m going to do on the gauges. I think I will be drawing up some of the faces and them have them lasered out with the rest of the parts I’m making.

Laser sounds pretty good. Arizona Models sells laser etched gages with their instrument sets. I found it was as easy this time around to print mine on quality photo paper and glue on the needles. Since I only had 3 instruments making the bezels was pretty simple out of styrene.

I’mmmm Back….
Ok back to building had to stop and take care of birthday week for the wife. I don’t really know how it went from one day to a week. But I have to keep her happy so I can acquire more flying and non-flying machines.

I have been doing some work in the backgrounds since I last posted. I have been working on the first round of part that I dropped off to be lasered a few days ago. They should be done on Saturday… maybe… tonight we are getting 6-10 inches of snow. I have posted a PDF of the flat pattern of the parts that I’m having made. I have also added a PDF of the parts as there being used. The view with the nuts and bolts, are the wing supports holders the other view is for the landing gear.

With the laser parts getting done soon I will be able to finish of the wing support. I talked to the people at RC Showcase and changed my engine order from the Roto25 to the Roto35Vi. The 35 is ½ pound heaver and has a little bit more power. The Roto35Vi was in stock and should have shipped today so I will be installing the firewall and engine soon so I can move forward with the front of the fuse.

I have been playing a little with the gauges and think I have them figured out. If you look at the attachment in the last post you can see the bezels that I’m having made. I have some black and white gauges that I will be trying to use and see how they turn out for the first try.

Randy,
I have a question for you. On the flying wires for the landing gear where dose the center one attach to on the fuse? I have been looking at the pictures and and see most have a center wire but I cant see where it attaches to. Can you tel me show me how you did yours?

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

I drilled a hole through the hardwood fuselage crossmember that serves as the forward landing gear mount.... then I used a 4-40 rigging coupler that I think may be held in with a blind nut and a jam nut....or the tension of the cable may hold it, with a nut on the insde for tension adjustment..I'll look for pictures... I did the same on the landing gear spreader bar. this is so the cable can be more or less easily removed in case you need to remove the plywood fuselage bottom plate....

Here are a couple of pics of the spreader bar....the black threaded part is the rigging coupler..I did something similar on the fuselage end---but without the brass-probably a washer.....hope this helps...!!

Mark,

Have you worked out how much modification the firewall will need to fit the 35 vs. the 25?

Hi Mark,
I have not work out the new fire wall position yet. I have been avoiding anything that needs to be done on the front end until I get the engine and firewall in place. The engine did ship on Friday so it should get to me some time this week. I’m looking forward to getting it installed and start thinking about where to mount the tank and servos.

Mark

Hi Tom,
That sounds great, I want to take another peek at your D8 and see what you have done so far in person. I will put the engine back in the Siemens Schuckert D.III and clean all the balsa dust off of it from the two builds. I will give you a call later today to get the details.

Mark

Hi Mark,

For what it's worth I used a fuel tank from Hobby-Lobby...it is a Graupner tank and is short and wide. The 14oz fit perfectly between the firewall and the forward lower wing mounting tube...your firewall may be in a different place though....

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/fueltank.htm

scroll down to the "4-stroke" tanks....

Hey Randy,
Thanks for the info on the tanks. I did ask you what tank you were using on your HD1 build thread and used that tank in my Siemens D3. I bought two 14 and one 12oz tanks at that time for just this case that I might be building this next. So the tank is sitting and waiting to go in. I think the firewall will sit about 1” inch back from the front. If anyone out there has a fuel chart or has a Roto35 and can tell me about how much gas it sips that would be great. I try to make sure I can fly for 20-30 minutes.

Mark

I have mounted the top and bottom wings. The brass rod that slips into the wing to mount get a hole drilled threw it. In drilling the 3/16” dia brass rod I didn’t want to open up the wood around it so I put in sleeves. With the sleeves in place I drilled a pilot hole all the way threw and then opened it up to 3/32” dia slide a screw in the hole and move on only 3 more to go.
