Bob Wilkinson -> Old Fox Fuel-Engine started with our glow battery (12/13/2006 11:37:56 PM)

I was recently given a quart can of Fox Dukes Mixture fuel. I was told that it was at least 10 years old and had never been opened. I have a Fox 40 ABC that I have been running for over a year and using Omega 10% with a little caster oil added. Engine runs fine on the Omega. Today, I decided to see if the Fox fuel was any good. I filled the tank, primed the engine and it started right up, but quit when the prime ran out. I opened the needle and put my finger over the air intake for another prime and the engine fired up WITHOUT THE GLOW PLUG BATTERY. I had to open the needle about 1/2 turn and the engine ran for the entire 10 min. flight. I refueled after letting the engine cool down and I primed it again and it started again WITHOUT THE GLOW PLUG BATTERY!!

Does any one have an explanation for this?

I've heard that a long time ago (much more than 10 years) Fox fuels used a substitute for nitromethane that gave more power but was eventually banned after it was found to be carcinogenic or some such. If this is true and this is what you have then maybe it degrades over a long period and becomes shock sensitive and acts like ether in diesel fuels.

A few people have said that they've had an engine kick on modern fresh fuels too before the plug has been lit but I must admit that in the close to 50 years I've been playing with engines I've never come across it or heard of it first hand.
