One more thing about to say about this engine/exhaust talk, and then I'm done. I started fitting the chin cowl on tonight and ended up having to cut away large pieces on either side to accommodate the exhaust. I was very careful, using a template first and then trimming as necessary, and am still not happy with the results. Will post pics later, as I have walked away from my work for the evening. I plan on test running the engine in the plane to check for vibration problems that may have arisen with mods by tomorrow afternoon.

But, it looks like the only retract servos that will work are the JR high torks. I tried 2 new Hitecs ( regular retract servos ) and they didn't have nearly enough muscle.

I have installed, and operated, the recommended JR-791 and 791R (reversed) servos on the mechanical retracts, but have not yet mounted them in the wing.

As you point out, the gear takes a lot of "ummph" to operate, but with 260 oz. of torque, these babies could pull stumps out of the ground!

The weak link now seems to be the stock JR plastic servo arm on the servo. It distorts noticably when at either end of it's travel. You can't use the JR-supplied servo disk as its "throw radius" isn't big enough to lock the gear in each direction. Anyone know if servo arms that fit the JR serrated output shaft are available in metal?

Lastly, any opinions out there, yet, on the strength of the gear rails in this version 2 'Stang? They were a significant point of concern in the previous version...

I got one of the P-51 150s for christmas from the wife. In looking for a engine, I found that with a little reworking of the built-up front end ( Dremel work and reinforcing to clear the mounting ears) a DA50 with the slimline pitts muffler with smoke will fit (without smoke will fit also). I just received the parts this week and it is a tight fit but it will work. There is about 1/8" on each side between the muffler and the inner flange for the cowling. Using the supplied spinner and the stand-offs that come with the DA50 there is a little over 1/4" between the firewall and the muffler. Using the stand-offs supplied with DA50 puts the prop flange in the proper distance to give you 1/8" gap between the spinner and the fusalage. The opening that would be required for the head is a little bit bigger than what is required for the Saito 220.
The prop that I will be using to break in the motor is a 22x10. Later after the engine is broken in, I would like to run a 22x12 or 24x10 (Trying for speed with good flight characteristics). I will have test the different props to see how it will fly.
In respone to the question about the servo arm. The instructions state on page 17 that you should use an 1/2" aluminum arm. I remember reading that there was recommended Hanger 9 part number, but I cannot remember the part number ( I will have to research this.). One arm that might work if you shorten it is the JRPA236 or the JRPA235.
I will post my progress of the build and how it flies (Including pictures, and maybe video) after I return from a trip to Hawaii. I cannot start the build until I get back in the middle of Feb. I should have the plane ready to fly by the first or second week in March.

Hello Rip n Bank,

The servo arms you should use are HAN3531 By HANGAR 9. They are metal and work great. I used the middle hole. My gears works both right side up and inverted. If they work inverted, you should be fine, because you are fighting the weight of the gear and wheels and the springs are not helping in that case.

Rip...Dubro also make some high strength servo arms. They aren't aluminum(not sure of the material, some sort of composit), but neither will they break or twist. Just another option.

Another note of measure to anyone interested in the looks of their bird. Received my scale exhaust kit from Tony Howard at Pacific Scaled Aircraft today. Really nice kit and will really add a lot to the beauty of your 51. He usually has his ad posted at the top of the warbirds forum when you check in. I build my birds to fly, not show, but man when you can make em look good too its worth throwing away those plastic vac formed things that come with the model.

Dad and I are about to buy one of these babies, just unsure of what engine to go with, we are tossing up between a saito 180 or a saito 220, we need to spin a 3 blade prop hopefully in the 17-18" range hence im guessing it will have to be the 220. Does anyone know how well the 220 fits inside this plane with muffler? Cheers, oh and any ideas how fast u would expect it to fly with a 220 3 blader.

I have a Saito 220 on Hangar 9's original 1.50 P-51. Neither the 180 (which I used to have on it) nor the 220 will fit into the cowl completely, but both fit in nicely if you don't mind the heads sticking out of the bottom a little. I haven't taken any pics since I replaced the 180 with the 220, but I'll try to do that.

One note: with my 220 mounted inverted, I could not get it to idle--period. It idled perfectly mounted upright on a test stand, but inverted was a different story, and no amount of tinkering with the low end would fix it. So I ended up installing an onboard glow. With a glow assist, the 220 idles nicely and provides all the muscle this plane needs.

My post #32 in this thread, and others, show pictures of a Saito 220 mounted on this plane with just the valve covers extending outside of the cowl.

My pics don't show the stock muffler installed, as I intend to use a Keleo pitts-style, but the H9 instruction manual shows a picture of a 220 with the stock muffler extending downward in the lower rear cowl exhaust area. Hard to tell if the cowl needs any cut-out for that placement, but if so, it would probably be minimal (and hopefully, same for the pitts muffler).

Sorry, but I don't know the speed you can expect with a 3-blade on this engine/airplane combo. I'll be breaking in the engine soon (on test stand, inverted) with a MAS Classic 18x8 and eventually will try a 20x8 to see if the (broken in) 220 can handle it. Other Saito engine threads imply that size is at the upper end of what the 220 can swing at a decent max RPM.

Thanks for the tip on both the servo arms, and the scale exhaust from Pacific. I'll check that out.

I'm also leaning towards installing the Top Flite P-51 cockpit upgrade for their version of a 80"+ Mustang.
