I figured since this is the H9 P-51 Build thread I should post some pics. I have the finished product and this is an awesome airplane. It fly's like a dream. It has an Evolution 35GT2 for power with the Keleo exhaust.

Ricardo

Thats a nice looking plane, but don't you think it is time to take down your X-mas tree!

I got my retracts today that I ordered for my Mig 3. What a great deal using these gear. Are the JR retract servos the only ones recommended?

That photo happened to be taken in December when my dad and I were going to a 3D fly-in the next day on December 23rd hence the x-mas tree. All the 3D guys loved the plane it was the main attraction. I would only recommend the JR retract servos because of the power they put out. I have had very good luck with them they are on the expensive side but they really do the job no regrets. BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THE SET SCREWS IN THE RETRACTS THE ONES TO TIGHTEN THE STRUT DOWN. THOSE SNAP SO REPLACE THEM WITH SOMETHING OF BETTER QUALITY! Some of the guys at our local field have the H9 P-47's 1.50 with the same problem.

What firewall mods were needed to install the 35GT and the Kelo?? Is the Kelo you used the one that exhausts out of all 12 pipes??

The only firewall mod that had to be made is to re-drill the firewall for the 35gt2 which can be done in no time other than that the firewall is still from factory. I did use the H-9 factory mount to install the engine. The keleo is the one that does work on all 12 pipes and it looks really cool when it starts up and barks smoke and oil out the sides like the real one. During break-in it can get messy but after break in the oil residue is not too bad a little bit of water and a rag and thats it. Also the sound is awesome. Will get those pics posted of the cowling tomorrow.

I would say that maybe the HS75BB could work, but you'd be risking a stripped servo since the HS75BB's are not metal gear. They are a combination of nylon and karbonite and each one costs about $34 or so. It only has 113 oz of torque at 6v and only 91 at 4.8v.
Just as a note, I had an HS75BB installed in a kyosho Me-109 using 60 size Spitfire H9 retracts and the servo stripped after the 2nd flight. The weight of those retracts are a lot ligher combined then one of the oleo strut equipped 1.50 size gear you got.

Hobbico offers a retract servo but its about the same as the HS75BB.
Im not sure if there is another brand that offers more torque except for the JR791's

I build in the 75BB`s first but now I am replacing them by the JR`s. The 75`s gave me the feeling they were just to weak for the job.

The JR`s pull very smoothly where the 75bb`s really work to get the gear retracted.

Another thing that has to be put to mind if you have the doors on it as the plane is speeding up and climbing the doors are putting a lot of resistance and it takes some umph to get that gear up. I had the hitec 75 in my .60 h9 p-51 and it resulted in 2 belly landings because the servo stripped.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like i may have to spring for the Jr's. My only issue is I really need them to be 90 degree instead of the 85 that they are. My center section of my Mig is flat without dihedral unlike the Mustang. I am thinking of mounting the gear at an angle so when the struts are extended they are 90 degrees to the runway. I just hope I can get them to pull up fully into the wing.

"Frankie" is ready for his first flight (finally!!). Rip, what fuel are you using in the 220? I've been running 20/20 for the break-in. Forecast is for a 13mph 90 degree cross wind. Not good. If it doesn't change, I'll wait. If it's a go, I'll take some pictures and video.

Hey Nick,

I use 20/20 exclusively (with all my Saitos, including my 220).

Your forecast doesn't look good at all; Frankie is sensitive to cross-winds when taxiing, and they can complicate an otherwise straightforward torque-steer correction on take-off.

I'd wait for good weather!

Good luck, and keep us posted...

Rip

Might consider using a wood wedge to angle the gear mount to what you need. Recess the rotating end of the gear mount more into the wing so when the gear comes up, the wheel will go all the way into the wheel well even though the oleo itself will kinda be at a 5 degree angle inside the wing when retracted relative to the horizontal plane of the wing.

Yah, Kahlog that is what I was thinking. I picked up a JR servo from HobbyClown on the way home from work and am getting ready to test it out. I am pretty confident that this will work well and am happy to have found a cheap retract solution for the Mig 3.
