I am in the process of installing my servos in frankie, but cannot come up with a location to install a servo and air valve for the robart retracts I will be using. I have added one servo in front of the rudder servo for the choke, which does not leave me with very much space in front of the other servos.
Any suggestions ? Keith

Hmmm, where will you locate the air tank? It's appreciably bigger than the servo/valve combo.Regardless, the center servo bay, like you said, is pretty full.

If I were replacing my Frankie's mechanicals with a pneumatic system, I'd probably put the lightweight air tank in the rear bay under the pushrods, and put the servo/valve assembly in the forward compartment behind the fuel tank, or as an alternative, integrated into the wing, itself (ie, cutting into the sheeting, and mounting in the top center of the wing that is covered by the fuselage).

The latter requires that you have only one quick-connect fitting between the tank and the valve when you attach the wing, versus two if you mount the valve inside the fuselage (assuming air-up/air-down).

Rip- Thanks for the input about locating the valve and servo in the wing. I did not think of that one. The tank location was easy as I used some info in this thread as to location, back among the push rod tubes. I made a strap along with some velcro. Secured in place with two bolts near the blind nuts for the wing bolts. I do have a set of new, never used retracts, struts and wheels available for sale if you or any one you know needs an extra set.

Thanks- Keith

hey guys, looks like I will be gettin a new Frankie back (back on page 54 I crashed mine due to RX failure). After some complaining and speaking to managers at Horizon they gave me half off a new one and replaced the receiver for free. I got the FG36 back up and running on bench after the crash damage of replacing valve pushrod and intake manifold.

So since doing a new build I wanted to find out a couple things

Can I make the wing a two piece removable instead of one large piece? Is really large as a one piece wing and difficult to carry around

Also with the FG36 was nose heavy a lot where I had to add a lot of tail lead....any ideas from anyone whose done balancing on this model?

Thanks and look forward to flying Frankie again!

Can you put the rx battery back near the tail wheel? Might help with CG with the motor your using. I didnt use a gasser, but I ddint have to change anything when i first balanced mine. I have the main rx on the inside wall of the fuse behind the standard servo tray, another battery behind the firewall for the retracts and on the opposite side of the fuse to that is the mcdaniels onboard glow with built in 5000mah battery(pretty same basic size as an electronic ignition.)
If your motor weighs more then a saito 220(which it probably does), then placing the rx battery at the tail near the tail wheel would probably help.

The only thing I might be concerned with is (if I was using 72 megahurtz [)])...that the length of the power lead wire might act as an antenna and be able to screw up the RX.

is your antenna wire outside or inside the fuse? You can put a ferrite ring on the battery lead...might eliminate any "noise".

yup...a ferrite ring should do the trick...
..extra weight though

Hey guys i was hoping someone here might be able to help me out on this one. I am using an Expert brand on-board glow driver for my Saito 220 in the Mustang. the problem is that im not getting full glow brightness as if i was with just a single cell 1.2 volt glow heater. I have it setup such that it only glows at 25% throttle or less. battery pack is a Sanyo 2700 Mah 4-cell 4.8V pack. I also have the glow driver setup such that i may add my one cell glow heater through the cowl with a remote glow head mounted on the side of the firewall. I did this because the Expert wasnt making sufficient glow on the newly breaking in 220. The problem is that with just the Expert on-board glow driver i get a very dim glow, sort of like a 50% glow brightness if even that, but as soon as i connect the 1.2volt glow heater the glow plug will light bright as necessary. Can someone point out where im going about this wrong, as its difficult for me to see how the 1.2volt glow heater can make a brighter glow than a fully charged 4.8volt 2700Mah battery pack. Thanks everyone for the help in advance.
Louis

You may have a high resistance connection somewhere in the glow circuit, or the leads are too long from the glow plug to the driver/battery, or the wires are too small for the length of run you have, or.......?? With the glow enabled, measure the voltage at the battery, coming out of the controller, and at the glow plug itself. That should tell you where the problem is.

You can fix the problem by using two batteries in on a y-harness. I had to do this as well because the resitance was a little high sicne I did use long lead to the glow plug head.

Maiden attempt today was not successful. Got the motor tuned very well with an idle of 1900-2000 and a top end rpm of 8500 on a 16x10x3 MAS prop. Keep in mind this is on 15% nitro. Bo says he gets about 8600-8800 using 20% so Im comfortable with the 8500.
Anyhow.....taxied out on the runway and lined up for take off. Started the rollout and after a little while, the plane started veering RIGHT and was not able to correct with full rudder. Well, a second later, the right gear collapsed immedietely causing the plane to spin around.
After retrieving the plane and inspecting it, the servo arm on the retract servo snapped in half and the two springs on the retract mechanism couldnt hold the oloe locked with that much side force on it. Seems that the servo snapping is what caused the plane to veer right as that oleo started to buckle slightly until it actually fell in.
Anyhow...new servo arms will be ordered. The ones in the plane were very thick karbonite type, but will be replaced with metal. I thought sicne those karbonite ones were very stought, they'd be just fine. Nope!!!
No other damage was descovered except the right aileron control horn was broken when the gear fell since that horn took the impact.

Since next sunday is Mother's day, unlikely the plane will get back to field until the following week.
