Just curious, i notice you guys are using 16 inch props in and around the 10 pitch, will this really give considerably more speed as im thinking thats gonna cause to over rev the 220. I was breaking in using an APC 18x8 wide prop and the speed is already very fast although i havent tried radar speed checking the speed of the plane at full bore or anything, im thinking of even using the 18x10 or 19x8 wooden Xoar prop, is this going wrong with this 220?
thanks.
Louis

Its not going to over rev in flight if the static rpms read 9000 or lower on the ground. It'll pick up maybe 300-500 rpms due to unloading, but thats gonna be standard with whatever prop. Now...if someone were getting 9500+ Id be worried. AS such, that is why I wouldnt put a 16x8 on mine cuz I know it'd be pretty close to 10K. I also think a 16 inch diameter 2 blade prop is marginal thrust wise as well for a 16+ pound plane. Sure, im running a 16x10, but a 3 blade so its comparable to a 17" 2 blade prop thrust wise. Hopefully it'll be enough. I expect it to take a little more runway to get off the ground then it does Bo's plane with the 18x8. If I could find a 17" diameter 3 blade prop, Id be happy. Anyone with ideas?

well im using a 16x8 apc two blade on a saito 180 running with 15%, im getting 9000rpm and a healthy smoke trail with a takeoff roll of only around 50m off grass. Frankie weighs in at 6.9Kgs and it hoots along quite nicely

6.9kgs is less then 16 pounds...its 15.2 pounds. I stated a 16 inch prop is marginal for a plane weighing 16+ pounds. At a pound less then that, the 180 is just fine on a 16x8 prop. I am not going to assume what altitude your at as I have no idea, but here where I live at 5000+, a 16 inch 2 blade prop on a 16+ pound plane would not be ideal. Probably fly, just not much left over.
I do have a saito 180 with a 16x8 prop on it thats sitting in my KMP Me-109. But, it weighs only 13.9 pounds(or 6.3kg). Big weight difference.
This H9 P-51 was designed with a 180 in mind so yeah it should fly on a 16x8 if kept to the spec'd weight. Over that and no, a 16x8 is not so good.

simmer down bud.............i made mention of the difference in altitude...so yeah it will make a big difference here. Maybe not so much where you are if your at lower altitude. You need to take that into consideration. Air is alot thinner here then at sea level or even 1000-2000 feet. Bigger prop needed for enough air flow. End of story.

^^^^ rofl Just by you posting that negated what you typed in that post. But it was funny nonetheless.

Moving on.......

Since im waiting on the metal servo arms(have them on order), I took the chance to maiden another plane yesterday....a VQ P-40 Much smaller at 63" wingspan. The only reason Im making mention of it is because it has one of those Expert onboard glow units in it.
The glow unit has a 1500 4.8v nimh for the powersource, but, for some reason, its not getting enough voltage to the glow plug itself to get it even hot enough to see any orange "glow" at all. The system is working as it does make the normal vibration style whine if you remove the glow plug from the motor, but still have the plug cap on the glow plug and touch the side of the motor with it armed. And yes the battery was fully charged.

If I remember correctly, someone had previosuly stated they were having similar issues with their Expert onboard glow and just wanted to confirm those results.
Two 4.8v batteries may work to keep the voltage up...however....if not....I'll try a 6v battery on it. Package manual says it can use a 1 cell, 4 cell, or 5 cell battery. I'll probably have to go with the 6v battery since the leads are pretty long, however I did use this same Expert unit in my H9 Hellcat with two 700mah 4.8v batts on a y-harness and it worked fine.

I'm almost sorry I stirred up the whole prop thing !! I just ordered a 17x10 Bolly from DA. Should be here by the weekend. What does everyone think the lowest top RPM should be at full throttle? The 4-strokes are supposed to have more power at lower RPMs, but nobody ever says what those lower RPMs are?? I still think the 10 pitch props will gain more RPM in the air than the smaller pitches, no?

Nick,
Sad news to report on the Corsair. Finally had her flying good and was really enjoying the WOT on the deck fly by's. Coming out of a loop on the second flight, the elevator control rod came loose from the control horn on the evevator and she went straight in from about 100 ft. Just glad it wasn't my Frankie! Thanks again for your help, I set eveything to your settings and all went alot better until disaster struck. The Saito 100 came of out it ok, just a good clean up was all t hat was needed. Some planes are just never meant to be long for this world. It was only the 4th flight on it. I usually check everything after every flight, this time I didn't. So goes our hobby.

Glad to hear of your continued success with your Frankie. I'm a little gun shy right now, so I think I'll let mine sit for a while longer.

DANG! I LOVE THIS HOBBY...................MOST OF THE TIME!.......................................................CAPTAIN RON.

Sorry to hear that Cap'n. My thumbs and knees still shake when I fly Frankie or my CompARF Xtra. I guess I need to get that "don't give a s#*)" attitude with all my planes and just fly and enjoy them even if they don't have a long life. Luckily, my Corsair is over two years old now with only minor scrapes from having the gear collapse on some landings. Being that old, I usually fly it with one or two other Corsairs at the field, all with their throttles wide open. The Pattern guys usually land when they hear us heading to the flight line !! If I lost my Corsair, I would definitely build another. Don't take too much time off, though !!

Good luck,
Nick

Thanks Nick,
Need to get Frankie up maybe this weekend. Once I get her up, the jitters go away and I just have fun....... Have a Top Flite Gaint Jug on the Bench now. Close to covering. 8 months into it now. Using Balsa USA SOLAR TEX AND PAINTING IT. Built the razor back version and it's coming out real nice. Should have it ready by Warbirds over Pueblo in August with a few successful flights on it. A G-62 will do the work up front with all JR for the steeiring. TALK ABOUT KNEE SHAKES AND THUMB JITTERS!!

Captainron....defintely get another Corsair as they are one of the best flying planes out there. When mine went down, I was bummed too, but decided to build my Kyosho Corsair instead of buying a new H9 since I already had the kyosho. I also have a CMP Corsair as well as sierra giant retracts for it, but no motor. So, the kyosho one got built instead since its smaller and found an electric motor big enough to spin a 15.75x13 3 blade prop. Motor only cost $45

But, if you want a new plane a little different and that has flaps for your saito 100, consider the VQ P-40. It also flies very well. Amazingly good provided that it weighs close to 10 pounds(with CJM rotating retracts). I have a saito 100 in mine and test flew it yesterday with a 13x8x3 prop. Lands pretty slow even with half flaps.
Of course another option would be to get the new KMP B-25 and put two saito 100's on it like Rip N Bank.
Mine is the smaller 85" size and Im putting saito 91's on it.
