Thanks for the info. I cut out the spinner like you guys have mentioned and it appears to be ok. I may get a Dave Brown spinner if the one I cut out is no good though. I just do no feel like remounting the engine at this time. I have had to rebuild 4 planes and a heli becuase a pipe busted in my basement a couple of months ago and I just want to get these planes built. Once again thanks for all the help.

I have run into another problem with the spinner backplate. The hole is too big for the shaft of the motor and there is no bushing in the kit. I called hangar 9 and they said that the included spinner was for display only. I informed them that this is wrong and that the supplied spinner could be used for flight or static display. The rep said that I should go to a machine shop or something like that. Did you guys have the same problem? ALso, can I just find a bushing that centers the spinner backplate or do I in fact, need a new spinner all together. I am using the recomended SAITO 1.80 motor. Thanks.

Tom,

I agree with the H9 guy that this should be a display spinner, only, regardless of what the manual implies.

It's way too thin and weak to handle the dynamic loads at 9000 rpm, and the first time you nose over, and you will, it'll dent!

I dropped mine on indoor/outdoor carpet (no padding) in my basement workshop and the rounded nose easily dented inward about 1/8 of an inch. I'll pop it back out and probably have to repaint it for future display use.

Buy a Dave Brown for $50. Paint it with self-etching primer and H9 Cub Yellow paint. The plane is worth it!

Bo

THanks I think that is what I'll do. This is the first thing that Hangar 9 has been crappy about. You buy a 600.00 airframe and another 350.00 on a motor that they recomend, and the spinner does not work. Oh well, it could be worse. At least the construction of this plane seems to be very solid. Thanks for all your guys' help.

I give Hangar 9 credit for wanting to provide a scale propellor and spinner with the kit, for static display purposes. After all, that huge 4-blade prop is one of the most prominent characteristics of the big muscle bird, and it really does look kinda funny with that enormous spinner and two bitty little blades sticking out. They even threw in two underwing bombs, to further enhance that macho look. But I wonder how often guys will be willing to pull the flying prop and spinner off and replace it with the static display spinner, except for rare occasions like shopping mall expositions, etc. Even so, it is a nice touch to what looks like a fine, fine kit.

I will be ordering a Dave Brown 5" parabolic for mine. I just know I'm going to end up with the nose in the turf some time.

While your at it ditch those vac formed exhaust manifolds and order you a set of Tony Howard (Pacific Aircraft) manifolds. They aren't operational(you can use them for cowl cooling) but they are sweet. Just take your time and follow the detailed directions he sends. Don't ask how I know.

Reincarnate,

Tony and I have already been talking... looks like a product I couldn't pass up, with everything else so top drawer on this model. Slick little add-on he's got there.

Spitpilot -> RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build (1/27/2007 5:58:04 PM)

Hi guys - Bo thought you all might be interested in the engine installation on my original H9 150 size P51 which I posted on that forum. The three photos show the installation which consists of the Saito 180, Solo 4 bladed variable pitch prop, the Dave Brown spinner - note the fine line machined into the spinner between blades simulating the full scale production break, and the fully functional scale Keleo exhaust system.

pettit -> RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build (1/29/2007 1:00:00 PM)

The spinner supplied with the Hangar 9 P-51 (new version) looks to be the same as the old Zinger spinners.

If cut correctly and installed using the supplied screws, they will work just fine.

Just don't tighten the bolts too tight or they will strip the backplate.

The fix for that is to take the spinner and backplate off the engine and use blind nuts installed "backwards" on the rim of the backplate.

Tighten the bolts tightly and tack the blond nuts into place using a drop of thin CA.

Remove the bolts and epoxy the blind nuts to the rim being careful not to get epoxy in the bolt holes.

I used a brass tubing spacer over the prop shaft that fits the hole in the backplate.

Cut it to about 1/4" long and it'll align the spinner and not interfere with the back of the prop.

Spitpilot, that's a fine bird you've built. Did you put the break line in that spinner yourself? Mine is still on the bench with details trying to emerge from my limited artistic and building skills. I just wish that it was summer and I was at the field flying instead of being where the wife can holler that I've spent enough time in the shop...you know what I mean. Anyway here's some in progress pics of Tony Howard exhaust manifold. This is how far I got tonight before the hollerin' started. Just kidding, she's due to be canonized next week.

I am trying to figure out how I'm gonna route/connect all the linkages on my Evo35 and I was wondering if you could post a few more pic's of your engine compartment so I could get a better idea.

Thanks

REINCARNATE,
I ALSO WENT WITH THE TONY HOWARD MUFFLER FOR THE 51. YOURS LOOKS GREAT. Did you have to use filling like the instructions call for to fill around where the shroud meets the fuse? what colors did you use for painting? I've got the 220 Saito mounted up. Had to move the engine mount holes back in slightly. I ordered the Dave Brown 5" spinner, got it last night but they sent me the wrong adapter kit. It needs the extra long jam nut to receive the allen head bolt from the spinner. I got the ailerons, flaps and elevators all hinged up this weekend. Time to start installing servos and retracts. I'm also going to use screws to install the canopy, don't like to use gule on those. I was wondering about your plans on that subject.

DANG! I LOVE THIS HOBBY. CAPTAIN RON.

Jarrah,

There's no overriding reason to go with the Pitts over stock.

However, I've heard large displacement Saito's with Pitts mufflers and I like the difference in the exhaust note. But the main reason is that I can cleanly cut off the down-pipes just a bit outside of the fuselage bottom for a fairly clean look. Didn't want to do that with the stock muffler.

Not sure both of the above are worth $80, but what the heck, this baby doesn't exactly qualify as "Econo-Bird", anyway! [:D]

Hey Captain,

Looks like we're pretty much the same stage of assembly. I also just hinged up the ailerons and flaps on the wing, and mounted their servos. Completed the stabilizer, elevator and rudder the previous weekend (sans pushrods and horns, as yet).

Yep, on the Saito 220 and Dave Brown spinner, you need the X-long 1.25 x 8mm extension. Also, I had to take the DB spinner back plate to a friend's machine shop to take a few thousandths off the center hole so it would fit on the larger diameter rear section of the crankshaft. Did you have the same issue?

Also, I spent a lot of time over the last week fiberglass reinforcing the retract mounting rails in the wing. They just didn't look robust enough for this weight bird, and this was a major complaint area mentioned about the previous version of this ARF.

ALMOST went with the scale muffler kit from Tony Howard that Reincarnate recommended, but then decided I'd first try my hand at scratch building it! I may not succeed in creating an acceptable substitute, in which case Tony's got another sale! If it turns out OK, I'll post some pics here soon.

Spitpilot -> RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build (1/30/2007 3:15:03 PM)

reincarnate - it's a Dave Brown spinner and I had them machine in the production break line when they made the cutouts for the solo 4 bladed prop. The Tony Howard exhaust manifold installation is looking good.

captainron - I think that using screws to attach the canopy is a good idea - I made mine a sliding canopy, a little time consuming and finicky but it looks really cool for static display.

reincarnate -> RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build (1/30/2007 9:01:36 PM)

Cap'n Ron,
On the Tony Howard exhaust, yeah you have to use a resin (or polyester) filler to build up trailing and leading edge of manifold. On the filler, remember to mix a small amount of epoxy and build up to consistancy with microballoons. You'll end up around 40%epoxy 60% microballoons (roughly) when your done. Hardly adds any weight at all by the time you're done sanding. As far as colors, I can't tell you. I start with a base and mix until I get the hue I'm after. Dry brushing after airbrushing helps alot with "used" look.
On the canopy, I screwed mine on. Always do anymore, cause nothing makes me an madder than a pilot laying on his back grinning, mocking my hard landing, and not being able to fix it.
Bo,
Looking forward to seeing how your exhaust comes out. I thought about scratch building mine too, then decided I couldn't do any better (or easier) than Tony's. He's got a good product.
San,
I'll get the pics posted as soon as my son get my camera back to me. I went with a very basic route, Dubro ball link connectors on both throttle and choke, 4-40 rod bent to fit, and remove springs from choke. Leave throttle spring on, it's small and a fail safe (springs closed). It's a basic setup, since there will never be any torque on your throttle, you don't have to be fancy, just secure. Choke is used ever so sparingly, so it's even easier. I put blind nuts and 8-32 screws on my cowl, so all my linkages are easily checked in pre and thru flights.

Bo, oh ok, hmm this is interesting. Ill have too see if anyone at the field has a saito running a pitts tho off the top of my head its only no muffler or the stock one. tho i do like the idea of not having to cut a messy hole for the stock muffler and only having to cut out 2 small holes for the pitts. Would you be able to link me to the pitts so i can check it out ect. Cheers mate.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Found one -- Slimline makes it. Have one for inverted mount and one for side mount. Ordered it this afternoon.

RIP N BANK
Took a chance and used my brand new fancy drill press and drilled the back plate myself. Seems to have come out good, no slop, back plate fits snug. Man, that really concerns me that your putting that much time into reinforcing the retract rails. Have you started your 220 Saito yet? I'm hearing so much about this big Saito now that I own one. Doesn't like to idle inverted, need an on board glow, hard starting when she's warmed up, likes to start backwards if your hand starting etc. Share some thoughts and experience with me on those subjects. I'm going to order a Mcdaniel on board glow system. I like the idea of just turning on the switch and starting. I also like the idea that when you idle down for landing, the glow driver comes on and keeps the glow plug nice and hot. Can't wait to fly this big stang! CAPTAIN RON.

Cap'n...Hang in there on that Saito. I think you'll love the way it hauls your bird around the sky. Use that McDaniel or another good quality on board driver (ask around for advice in glow forum) and she'll stay lit till you shut it off. From what I've heard, take your time, break it right, and it'll run any way you mount it.
