Had a question for you guys using the Saito 220, I was using the APC 18x8 Wide with good performance and wanted to experiment with props for a bit and picked up an APC 18x10 which my LHS suggested, the question is, this isnt the Wide version like i have in the 18x8, before i run this prop on Frankie I wanted to just ask opinions here on the use of this prop, its Very Narrow, it would seem that i would need higher rpm than what the 220 would make to get these very tapered blades to churn air, and it almost makes me think i wont get an improvement anyhow thanks for your input in advance. Sorry if its a silly question but if you saw this apc 18x10 youll know what i mean. Just to note, i know this isnt an APC Electric prop, made sure of that atleast.
Thanks.
Louie

I actually undertsand your concern. Rip N Bank is using a MAS 18x8. Nice decent width on the blades. Plane flies well. I have same motor(ie 220) and I put a 16x10x3 MAS on it. Plane flies ok, but doesnt seem all that fast. The blades on the 16x10x3 are a lot skinnier then those on an 18x8, so, Im kinda thinking the added pitch of my prop isnt really giving me faster speed, its just compensating for the lack of total thrust relative to the 18x8 prop since that one has wider blades. Does that make sense? You can try the APC 18x10 and see. Im sure the plane will fly ok, but dunno if you'll get more speed and you might lose some climbing ability with skinnier blades.

I really wish I could get a larger 3 blade prop...like a 17x10x3 or even an 18x7x3...but dont know anyone that makes such a thing.

One thing to remember is a multi blade prop is less efficient. Performance wise you are better off with a 2 blade prop (the CL speed guys use balanced single blades) for flying. Maybe you could fabricate a more scale static prop for display?

Kahlog, are you going to Warbirds over Denver? I am planning on going on Saturday. I will have the Fokkers.

Yes 3 blade props are less efficient. But, a 16x10x3 prop translates to a 17x9 2 blade. Still...less thrust then an 18x8, but should be slightly faster overall. Just...it isnt because the blades are a lot smaller then the 18x8 thus reducing the thrust output even more. I might try a KMP 3 blade prop as they look to have wider blades. I just dont know if i wanna spend $70 for ONE prop. Graupner props have wider blades then MAS and APC, but they dont make a 3 blade prop large enough wiht a higher pitch then 8. So, I dunno how effective a 16x8x3 prop would be. I do know that APC's 3 blade props have really, really skiny blades....but...on my Kyosho Corsair, those skiny blades are really pulling that plane along very fast. It might come to that....using a 15.75x13x3 blade prop. A 13 pitch seems awful high to be able to get a decent idel without the plane wanting to roll forward at a faster then snails pace.
In any event...I have ordered a 2 blade spinner and will do some testing....once I am more familiar with the plane. It flies now ok on the 16x10x3...so I dunno if i wanna mess with it yet. I do want mnore speed though, so I may try a 17x10 or n 18x10 3 blade

AS far as going to Warbirds over Denver.....I dont even have any info on it. Would be nice to go, but Id only be able to attend on Sunday as I work on Sat. ...so if your not gonna be there on Sunday, I probably wont go unless Rip decides he wants to.

Kahlog, here is a link www.warbirdsoverdenver.com

I went to the very first one, Warbirds over the Rockies and it was just as good as ours. I think you would be very impressed with the field at Jeffco if you have never been there. IMO it is the best field layout I have ever seen. The pit area is huge and the spectator area is very nice as well. If you can go, I think you would enjoy yourself very much. It is June 13,14,15 So you maybe could go down on Friday as well.

Hey Vertical, Kahloq,

I went to WoD last year (though Frankie wasn't ready so I didn't fly) and it was great!

I plan to be down there on Saturday and Sunday; don't know about Friday, yet.

Capt. Ron is bringing his Frankie up from Pueblo, so we'll have a number of Frankies (and maybe a "One Bad B****" in the air. Last year, they cleared the airspace and put eight giant scale 'Stangs in the air at the same time. VERY impressive!

Rip

Well Rip, I guess I will see you there on Saturday. I am not sure if I can hang around the full 2 days but maybe. Sunday is my girls day and you all know how important that is!

Well, I'll bring the camcorder, but everyone I know there will be in the air with a giant scale Mustang!

Still, I'll try...

Frank,

Well, we can't tell it's a "hanger queen" from the photo unless you tell us! Lower that pony from the ceiling and go fly her!!

If she's been hanging there awhile, pull the glow plug and clean it, first, or be prepared to replace it (w/ OS Type F). Storing Saitos cylinder-head-down is not ideal.

I can't imagine that the ten pounds or so of the total weight being supported by the Saito crank has any effect on that rather robust metal structure.

And, I couldn't help but notice that your offset oleos are on backwards (see pic below). The offset strut belongs on the inboard side of the wheel.

Is that a retractable tailwheel, or is it just "uninstalled"?

Rip
