Here she is. All I have to do is break in the motor and fly. I built the plane stock according to the manual and power is a SAITO 1.80 with an APX 16x8 prop. The only problem is that it is now about -1 degree outside. I can't wait til spring. The Hellcat is also Hangar 9 and these two planes are replacements for the other planes damaged in December when my basement flooded. Oh yeah, I will be painting the spinner yellow also. Hope all your builds go as smooth as this one did.

Looks great, Tom!

Can't wait to see a maiden flight report from you soon.

Weather here in Colorado sucks, too. Seven snow storms in seven weeks, beginning 5 days before Christmas. Three days ago it was -8 degrees F. Snow drifts still cover the ground almost everywhere! Worst winter for snow here since 1914.

Thank goodness for build projects like this one that help keep the dream alive!

Bo

You guys have definitely had a worse time then us over here in Illinois. Interesting story is that until about three weeks ago people were flying. We had weather in the 50's. However, my insurance company took their sweet time getting out to estimate my damages. People were saying that we would be able to fly all winter which would be very unusual for us. I told them just wait until my planes are done and there will be snow and cold. Just got both planes to were I could have them in flying condition and wham, the coldest weather of the year. I can't even fly my T-rex heli, becuase it is so cold the rotor head will come apart. I have to say all you guys on this site are great. I have been a member of several websites like this and there is consistentley great, informative posts and limited negative useless posts. I have only been building since august of last year, and flying since June of last year, and just hope that future builds will be as good as some of yours. Here's some pics of the planes I lost. The Somethin Extra is a kit, and my first covering job. Man when that baby flew I fealt great becuase I had put so much time and effort into the build. The unfinished it was going to be a 28% Edge 540, however it was basically submerged when the pipe in my basement broke. Oh well, could have been worse. I just can't wait until spring. Thanks for all the great posts on this and many other planes.

RIP N BANK,
Thanks for the pics of your hanger. Naturally my favorite is the Hanger 9 P-51 60. I am a Mustang addict. I have 4, all differant sizes.
Also, started the 220 this weekend. Let me fill you in on someting. THIS IS ONE SWEEEET ENGINE!! I bolted her up to the breakin stand. With manual in hand, primmed her up, put the glow burner on her, pulled her through by hand a half dozen times, felt that tell tell sign ( bump ) when she fired. Hit her with my old 90 size electric starter and away she went. ran a full tank through at about 2500 RPM. You talk about oil! at 5 1/2 turns rich, I had so much on the ground, it was melting the snow. After the first shut down, I felt the cylinder head, cool as a baby's but in a winter storm. Fueled her again. Again she took right off. Fired immediatly, this baby likes to run. Got a good 20 minutes on her. Shut her down, loaded my P-40 in the car and went flying. More good news. My student, (buddy ) who I been working with all last summer, finally soloed Sunday. First take off and landing.

REINCARNATE,
LOVE THE PICS OF THE BIG 51. She looks ready and willing to give you plenty of thrills. Nice job on the exhaust residue behind the exhaust manifolds. Love that realism. I like RIP N BANKS idea of carving out the fuse a little bit, making it possible not to have to do all the micro and epoxy work. Yes, I'm going to remove the covering. I wasn't planning on using any clear. Are you just spraying clear dope over eveything to seal her up? I already sealed the engine compartment with 5 coats of brushed on clear.

Yeah Cap, I'll clear flat the whoel airframe so that it matches up where I had to seal the paint I put on over the ultracoat. Will help take a little of the shine off to, since with all that gunpowder and exhaust residue, she evidently didn't role off the assy line yesterday. You can't see a lot of the detail in the pics, but there is streaking on the leading edge of the exhaust pipes from the one's behind it, and the exhaust shrouds are drybrushed to simulate the heat stress the heads would have under use. She's only new to me. In my mind she's flown 1000 times and wanted her to look it.

Be careful if you're thinking about carving out the fuse. There is a spar just about in the middle of the shroud that you'll get in to, and weakening the front end with that big engine might not be a great idea. Just a thought.

Cut some 1/16 th balsa to fit inside the plastic stack, flush with the edges and attatch with CA. Sand a little to true up. Now the whole thing has some substance, and a large area to hold the CA. Mark the location of the stack on the fuse. Cut away the film 1/16 inside the lines. Dry fit the stack a few times and then go for it. Wet the area with accellerator...put medium CA on the back of the balsa filled stack and carefully place in the exact place you want it. When you pres it down, the CA sets and holds against the slight curve. Later you can poke a little filler where it is needed, but I didn't have to.

Sorry Solar, those vac formed manifolds went the way of the rest of the plastic in the box. Mine (and I believe Captain Rons?) are Tony Howards great looking mods. Too nice of an airplane and too much time and money in the build to put on the supplied ones. To each his own. I've got the vac formed on the two smaller 51's I currently own though, so maybe I'm indecisive. Wait, no I'm not.

Captain,

Glad you like the pics. Yep, my "baby 'Stang" is my favorite plane so far, but I can already see that its big brother is going to probably bump it from the throne!

Man, was that great reading about your 220 break-in! LOL's about the spewing fuel & oil when running that rich. One wants no open flames around during the break-in run, that's for sure!

I'm amazed your electric starter would turn her over. Is that with the spinner (and a corresponding larger diameter rubber insert on the starter)?

Different subject: I just talked with Kelvin @ Keleo this morning and I'm about 10 days to 2 weeks from receiving my Pitts-style muffler from him. He did offer to change my Pitts muffler from a "two-down-pipe-from-the-cross-pipe" configuration to a single, slightly larger "oval" down pipe angled backwards so that it passes out the angled fuselage exhaust vent w/o needing to cut further into the chin cowl. I readily agreed with that offer!

Bo

Well, its a good trick for attachment of the flimsy ones. I usually get away with them because I do a lot of smoke streaks etc.
