....it's real east to say the APC props are better, but much harder to prove. As we can see
in the above test by yallaair, the 14-6 APC got it's butt whooped by a run of the mill wooded
prop. Lost by 5 mph in the air. So much for superior design.

The Rev-up props that were mentioned earlier were much more refined than the Zinger,
and were prized by the early electric flight modelers because of their higher efficiency.

...hmmm, where are the wonderfully "prized, higher effeciency" Rev-up's now ? Out of business ?

Darn.

Let the myth's continue.

Perhaps you lack comprehension of the subtle nuance the English language offers.

As far as Rev-Up goes, Chris Machin started the business in the late 40's and ran it for close to 50 years. The pylon props that you referred to (that most racers used for several decades) were Rev-Up's.

....it looks like the lads are still excited about using wood props for racing....Zingers.

Yes, Zingers were, and still are excellant props. Save a finger....use a Zinger.

When the Zingers first came out, I recall they were better than the Rev-Up's that many exclaim. But I guess we forget these things with time.

I am using a laminated Xoar 15x6 on my Saito 1.00 and love it.

I tried a wooden (Volk) 15x6 on my Saito 100 and it *didn't * like it at all.

It knocked like a demon -- and I was only using 10% fuel.

I suspect it was simply too light (the Volk props are very light) and not providing enough flywheel effect. Sure flew nice though -- but it was so scary to listen to that I only flew 1/2 a tank of fuel on it before changing back to a regular prop.

Nothing about a Q40 prop carved from a Zinger blank resembles the original Zinger...

... and exactly how will you "save a finger"? Stick your finger in that wood prop and you wont have a finger any more than if you put it into a C/F or nylon prop.

Years ago I stuck my finger into a top flite 11x7 prop. It cut my finger but the prop broke!

Don't worry, I tried all the usual things including:

1. richened it up (didn't help at all)
2. checked that the propnut wasn't bottoming on the thread and thus not clamping the prop sufficiently

The fuel is only 10% nitro and my Saito 100 and Saito 82 run fine on it with every other prop. Since Saitos will happily digest up to 30% nitro I don't think fuel was the problem.

When I put the other prop back on it was fine.

RPMs were the same with both props.

All I can think of is the lack of flywheel effect -- the APC prop is *heavy*, the Volk is *light*.

Likely the Volk prop moved more air, which loaded the engine more, which caused it to detonate. It's odd but if the prop is more efficient and moves more air then this loads the engine down and it turns less RPM. Course it could also be that the prop has more drag which also loads the engine down without moving more air.
