I have some 15% Cool Power for my Saito .72 and want to add castor to bring it up to 20%. 128/4=32 so I'll get the oil up to 20.2%with 4 ounces of castor. Where can I get some good castor oil? Where can I get some good synthetic for Powermaster and others?

A friend that I fly with uses Coolpower 15% and he adds 4oz. of Klotz synthetic oil to each gallon.

I have no idea where he buys the Klotz from though. He is a moderator on this site too so maybe he will drop in here and tell us where he gets it.

Otherwise I will ask him next time I see him.

PlaneBoy, DO NOT USE CASTOR OIL...!!! I have several Saito's and the owners manual says not to use oil with a castor base. I use cool power synthetic 15%. You can get cool power oil from Rick's Helicopter.
http://www.ronlund.com/index.html Click on new products. One quart sell for about $7

I'd only add about 2 ounces of castor to help the ring. I heard that running straight synthetic isn't good because it does something to the ring so about 2 percent castor with the rest synthetic.

Klots has a web sight....along with it a mixing chart that you can use to mix fuel...Benoil has castor mixed with it if you want to use it...
I bought racing fuel from the local speed shop. Ordered nitro from a local Klots rep...(along with a healthy HasMat charge..)
Depending on the motor you have 5% nitro is as low as I'd go and that's for a smooth transition from idle to full throttle
KL200 is what I used for a big Supertigre..till I got the idea to go gas...
Still use KL200 for premix in my Zenoah's and RCS..
Hope this will help a little..

Planeboy,
Adding 3% of castor will not hurt a thing. You may in fact be rewarded with an engine that will last longer, run more consistant and you will be satisfying the warranty which specifies 20% oil.
If you were adding castor to a high castor fuel, I'd recommend against it in a four stroke.
A little bit of castor in a four stroke will do wonders for ring/sleeve wear & seating, rod journal wear, and rust prevention in the bearings.
3% castor will not really be enough to gum up the ring or coke up the valves. I recommend an 18/2 syn-castor mix for fourstrokes but 17/3 is just fine.

Happy flying

I have 3 Saito engines and have been running Saito engines for several years.

My fuel of choice is Omega 25% nitro (syn / castor) and to this I add 3 to 4 ounces of Castor oil.

BTW: I use Omega 30% nitro Helicopter fuel (with additional bean oil) in my little Saito .30. Some of the early magazine adds Saito published on the .30 even mentioned using 30% nitro content fuel to make this little baby come alive!!

I have NEVER had a single problem with any of my Saitos. (let's NOT include crash damage here )

Clarence Lee who is probably one of the two or three most knowledgeable Glo engine designers alive today adds Castor to the fuel he uses in every engine he tests for RCM.

The reason Saito says not to use bean oil is that it can cause varnish and possibly carbon buildup. This is only a problem for guys not sharp enough to be able to take apart their engines once every flying season or so.

If this varnish is allowed to build up in the top end it can lead to poor running and even detonation.

Check the April 2002 issue of M.A.N. for an article of cooling engines and why Castor oil is so desirable.

BTW: For God's Sake DO NOT REMOVE that label from your pillow (just like the label says) lest they come and arrest you!!

I was going to mention SIG as well. My LHS sells it in quart bottles. I add a few ounces to every gallon of fuel I get.

You can go to the Klotz web page and buy it direct from them. I just purchased a case of their Super Techniplate....it is a mixture of their regular Klotz synthetic 80% and their highly degummed castor 20 %. All my engines love it!

Where can you get Castor in quantity (5 gal)? Ladyflier, I did a search with all kinds of combinations of "American Shortening and Oil Co " and could not come up with anything.
Thanks,
