It would help if you could tell us what it says on the engine crankcase to give us an idea of which engine you have?

Does the engine have a water jacket head? Or a heat sink head?

Is it rear exhaust or side exhaust?

Is the carb in the back of the engine sticking straight out or is the carb at an angle sitcking up in the front of the engine above the crankshaft?

I guess we have it narrowed down to sometime in the last 25 years?

Does it look like this 1980 vintage engine? 46VRM

There were only two versions - The 1980's 46VRM and the later, in 1995 they came out with the 46VXM which they still sell today. Yours just about has to be the 46 VRM because the VXM has a big VX on the side.

Just a side note from my experiences with marine engines is they seem to all carry the same piston and sleeve as thier other variants, they just change the head and the crank length, otherwise ive never found any difference in porting or such.
