In a German forum, I found a guy that has the large GeeBee Y and ASP 400 installed.
He uses a 22/10 prop on 10% nitro, and says it is an absolute must to have an onboard glow. He uses a single 7000mi amp batt, and also a servo operated switch for it.
His plane weighs 10,5kg, and balanced perfectly without any deadweight.

Flys and sounds fantastic he says.........just what I want to hear

I can't be sure yet. The first time I ran it, I had the HS needle leaned for normal power, but I was running it at only 4000 rpm on a small prop. At that first run, it consumed 15 ml per minute. Which is amazing economy. The second run, I enrichened the HS needle quite a lot so that it would be using excess fuel and hence excess oil. At that point it went to 59 ml per minute. The third run, I leaned the HS needle slightly, and the fuel consumption dropped back to 21 ml per minute.

All indications so far are that it will not really be a fuel hog. But we can't be sure until it is actually flying a 20-30 pound aircraft!

Hi Guys,

If you want a good heating system for all types of multicylinder engines, you may buy a microsens one. You find this under : www.microsens.at . Unfortuately it's in Austria, but it's really a good system to heat the plug. The one for your radial would be the GLOW5LP. I have myself two of these, one for a five cylinder and one for a seven cylinder, they give me totally satisfaction. You'll find a complete description of how it work's on their website.

The 250cm version can be flown on a 35cc to 60cc gas engine. I wonder how the ASP 400 compares to a 2st gas engine?
Like a 40? or something

The Saito 325 radial is a 52cc engine so the ASP/Magnum 400 radial would be 65cc. And I've always heard a glow engine has more power than a gasser of the same displacement.
So my guess would be that the 27% Gee Bee Y would be a great match for the ASP 400
I'm in love with the sounds of the radials as well, just don't have the funds to go for it yet. I did want to share a link so you guys could hear some of the big 215cc gas radials
http://www.airworld-usa.com/videopage.htm Check out the Gee Bee R3 and the Sukhoi videos.

Math note for the day...
For converting cc's to cubic inches, the formula is:
:: cc รท 16.387 = cubic inches
The formula for converting cubic inches to cc is:
:: cubic inches x 16.387 = cc
As quoted from http://94octane.com/articles/formulas.htm

The one for your radial would be the GLOW5LP.

Can you explain how this is wired to five cylinders? From the photo, I do not see five equal glow plug leads.

Yes, i can explain how it's connected

You have two yellow wires. one is connected to 3 plugs, and the other one to 2 plugs and a compensation resistor. On the electronic side, i'cannot explain how it works.

I fly with this connection and it goes perfectly.

You can read the manuel and find a plan of the connection under: http://www.microsens.at/modellfluge/index.htm select the GLOW5LP in the left frame and you find the same manuel as you get when you buy the device. It explains everything on how to set up the device.

If you have any other questions, I'll be happy to answer.

Hi there..

I`m in the process of building a Sist FW-190A8, 1:5 scale.. I have been playing with the idea of using a
radial engine for this bird. I have dry-fitted the OS Sirus engine, and it fits nice under the cowl.
But, the Magnum has aprox 15ccm more volume, and should be a tad stronger than the OS. + Its a lot cheaper :-)

Could any of you, that has this Magnum/ASP engine plase give me the dimesions on max outer diameter, and distance
from firewall to prop mounting flange. It`s impossible to find a drawning of this engine with dimension :-)

Tanks for your help, and greetings from Norway..

Sandman

I'm going to ask some stupid questions, so please don't be offended.

What brand is it?

*** My eyes just came into focus close up for long enough to read that it is a Microsens.

Didn't it come with instructions?

*** Don't you love it when the manufacturer assumes that you know their product as well as they do? Musta been an engineer that packaged that product.

Thanks for the link for the dimesions. BUT, I cant tell if the lenght of the engine is with or without the mounting flange.
Meaning the piece that is bolted to the firewall.. Could any of you that actuallay have this engine, please be bothered to measure the
lenght from firewall to propdriver..

Would it be possible to hanstart a radial like this..? My FW190 has a spinner that wont survive a hit from the starter :-(

Thanks

Regards

Sandman
