Hello Guys.

Count me in on the ST-club.

My oldest is from 1956 - a G21/35 - A fine cl- stunt - engine.

Yes - i also think that the carburatores is a week popint in ST - always was.

In the old days we put in a KAVAN - carb. in other times ENYA or OS carbs were popular.

The KAVAN is still prodused in the USA - at MECOA.

And in a lot of different bores and throatdiameters.

Otherwise : If you wear out an ST you have used wrong fuel - run it too lean - or have run it for several hundred hours.

KR

hld - OY-9901.

My King Kobra kit was finally completed and I have had an opportunity to break in and fly my Super Tigre G-61 ringed engine finally. I bought it last spring when Tower had them for sale for $5 off the usual price; for $79.99 this engine is really an amazing value!

I ran it rich and began leaning out the top end as per the instruction manual. After two tanks through it on the ground, I tuned it to 500 rpms rich of peak power. I used a Master Airscrew 11x7 Scimitar prop for the break-in, the recommended size for a break-in prop. It was comfortably turning it at 13,200 rpms using the ST glow plug included with the engine and 10% Wildcat sport fuel with 18% oil (80/20 synth/castor).

On the third tank, I tuned the low speed needle for a nice, reliable idle. The idle speed is still a bit high, but I expected to have to fly a ringed engine more before it really settled in completely.

My Super Tigre G-61 ringed and I have a long way to go yet, but so far I'm really impressed with the quality, power, and value of this engine. It's been easy to break-in, easy to tune, and produces gobs of power. For all of the comments I've read about STs not transitioning well, I'm also pleased to say that my experience here is opposite as well. The midrange transition on my G-61 is absolutely terrific.

If you're on the fence at all about trying a Super Tigre engine, my advice is, "Take the plunge!" I'm really glad I decided to roll the dice on Super Tigre.

I just put a ST51 in a Sig Citabria 35. Take offs in light wind about 10 feet. This is just the right amount of power. Plane on ground handles sweet - not like anything I read about on web..........

Just put the first three flights on my G90 in my Midwest Citabria. Two ended in deadsticks. The engine has a little rough spot in it right now, but I haven't tuned it for the lower temps. I really wanted to maiden my new plane, so I settled for "That sounds good". The engine is way more than the plane needs, so most of the flying was done an just above idle. I think it'll come in, just like my 2300 did. I'll be working with the stock carb on this one, though. Haven't even thought of trying the rotating of the spraybar. That may be all it needs.

Hey Troops,

New old guy here, been in the air since about July this year( I have yet to come down- flying is the greatest). Used an ST 45 on my trainer with an 11x8 prop, flew better than I did. Now have a U-Can-Do 46 with a SUPER TIGRE 61 ringed (got in trade) and a 14x6 prop on 10% c/l fuel with 11% synth and 11% castor oil. Just about as sweet as a gift cert to mlhs. This engine is pure guts and glory. Too much power for the plane, I shall install my old 45 on the tip and let the fun begin. Thought I'd share my enthusiasm with y'all and shall not inflict myself upon you further.

BigEd,
I just finished a KAOS kit and am breaking in my ST G61 in it. With 3 tanks through it I'm getting 11,500 on an APC 11x8 prop and 15%. I'll try an APC 11x7 and see what I get tomorrow. Like you said, the transition is wonderful and my idle ain't bad either. Are you also using the stock muffler?

My first Tigre was the .45 about 16 years ago. I've since used the .51, (excellent power and weight). We still have the .51 and its almost as old as the .45. I have the .61, 2300, and a 3000. I like Super Tigre motors, though they can be fussy if they want to be. I've ran the .90 a few years back and a friend now has it on a TF Tomcat. For a two stroker, they are a great value.

Update on the g90.

Pinched the outlets of the muffler down to gain better needle response. Changed the glow plug and now it's perfect. The plug was giving up on me and caused all the deadsticks. The F plug runs perfectly.

Hey CrateCruncher, that Kaos sounds like it should be a lot of fun! I am indeed using the stock muffler. I think the break-in goes best when using a lightweight prop and letting the engine spin up quite a bit.

I went with Master Airscrew for break-in because they weigh less than comparable APC props. My advice would be to use an 11x6 or 11x7 Top Flite wooden prop or Master Airscrew nylon prop for break-in, and then switch it out for an APC after the engine is well broken-in.

You might want to add an extra glow plug gasket (copper ring) if you're using 15% nitro fuel. My understanding is these Super Tigre engines provide high compression and run best on low nitro (or even 0% FAI) fuel. It sounds like your ST G-61 is running nice and strong for you, but I'm surprised you're only turning 11,500 rpms. Mine seemed really happy at 13,000+ rpms, and I'd hate for you to not enjoy the best performance you can get!
