Hi Brent,

I just started the P-38 acc. Art Johnson.
A couple of questions:
- The turbo chargers, have you looked at Nick Ziroli's plastic?
- Any idea of the projected weight?
Thanks,

Luc

Funny you asked that today. The build had to be put aside for a while to get funds. I just recieved the retracts, I went with the CJ gear made specifically for this plane. The attempt for the supercharger is going to be to model on after the picture and make a plug, then I can make to fiberglass versions off of the plug.. We'll see how it goes..

As for weight.. I still am up in the air when it comes to engines. I am shooting for under 16

For turbo chargeres and other details, check with Yellow Aircraft. They have a glass P-38 at 100" ws.
Also check: http://vicrc.com/products_p38.htm
He has an 88" ws model.

Any idea which canopy is the correct one from Sig.. I am trying to get it ordered.. I have collected all the remaining parts so my build continues.. When I ordered the retracts from Century Jet I noticed that they were around 2 inches to long for the nose wheel, and about 1 1/2 inch for the mains.. I called CJ and they are fixing them for me. Is there a diference in gear length between the different copies of plans? I also picked up the engines. One thing that did kind of dictate the engine choice was the size of the pod. There is really just over 3 inches of depth. This limits the engine choice. At first I was considering an RCV engine, also 91 4 strokes were a consideration, but after I discovered the issue, I decided to go with 2 of the new OS 75 engines. I also picked up the twin sync system, with glow drivers, and LCD readout. I still need to find the spinners, and get a couple more servos.. I am going with HS 225mg on the wing, and probably hs 635, or 645 on the tail. I have decided to go with the Glacier Girl scheme, mainly because of the olive drab scheme is easy to paint, and it is a notable plane.

Muchos Gracias.. I feel stupid. I have not looked at the plans for a while and that could have answered my question for me!

Brent nice project. Several years ago I built an early p40 Tomakawk from Art Johnsons plans and it was a good flyer. I will be watching your progress. Thanks Rich

Brent76,

Go to the Mecoa website. They offer CB associates spinners available in a P-40 style. These should fit the P-38 really well. You can also purchase an additional cone which you can cut into a three blade so you can display the three blade and fly with the two blade. These spinners come in white, red, and black. What have you decided to do for the turbo chargers? I am building the same plane and have not a real solution for these yet.

For the Turbo Chargers I think I am going to order some from GL hobbies.. I hope that it will work out... I got my OS 75 AX motors and tried to fit them in and ran into a problem.. they are to long and would require a lot of modification to make fit.. I sent they back and went to my LHS with the boom and tried to find one that would fit. The OS 91 FSII will fit with very little modifications, so I will use 2 of those. And a bonus is that they are a few ounces lighter than the 2 stroke 75.

I decided to snap some pictures of the fowler flap mechanism. To cool part of it is that the whole mechanism is removeable with just a coupld screws for maintenence. It actually fits flush and works really cool.. The little video is of the action, I simply have it hooked up to the elevator servo just to show the function. Full deflection with that is 40 degrees, I imagine when I hook it up to my 9303 I can get all the throw I will need.

Okay, I am on the spinner hunt.. I tried to go to mecoa and the page is down, tru turn makes a p-38 spinner but not at 3 1/2 inches, they do have a FAI style spinner at the right size however.. what do you guys think.
The first one is the FAI spinner, and the second is the p-38 spinner, the FAI appears to be a bit more rounded..

BTW, ordered the superchargers today from GLHobbies.com I spoke with them and they said that the pods on their plane were the same size as the AJ pod.. the only thing that changed was the wing, it was $25 for the turbochargers.. hope they look right!

Well, I got my os 91's yesterday and threw them on the test stand and ran a few tanks threw it, the both ran perfect.. Hopefully over the next couple days I can get them in the plane. I decided to go with the tru turn 3 1/2" FAI spinners with graupner 3 blade props. Still waiting on the gear to come back from Century jet. They came out a little mis-sized and they are taking care of it. The machine guns are finished, they turned out very nice, I will post pics later. I ordered the cockpit kit from Dynamic Balsa, it is designed for the yellow aircraft p-38, it is a little big, but we have to we can make it work. I also ordered the cockpit kit from rcairplanes.net. This is a little smaller plane at 88" and should fit right in. I will take pics for those who are fighting with this part of the build. The cockpit that can be ordered from sig seems a bit small. We are going to make our own canopy from from aluminum, and lexan. It should be cool as it will hopefully open and close nicely.
