Status: offline 		My brother in law is a mechanic for a local drag racing team, and has easy access to the alcohol and nitromethane they use in their drag cars. My frugal mind began to spark and then smoke, and I started wondering if I could use some of these fuels to mix my own glow fuel. I know nothing about mixing fuel and realize that it could be potentially dangerous, so I thought I would ask all the fuel gurus here if this is a smart thing to try, or even possible. If it is possible, is there anywhere I can get information such as recipes and/or safe methods?

Status: offline 		Gee, if you already have a source for DRY methanol and good PURE nitromethane you're WAY ahead of the game when it comes to making your own fuel. SIG sells castor and Klotz, about the two BEST oils you can get. I guess all you need to do now is to figure out just what kind of fuel you want to blend and go from there. I'm not about to tell you what to blend up...there is WAY too much controversy on that...do your research...you'll find something that does just what you need to do...mix it up and enjoy the hobby!!! And YES, mixing your own fuel is QUITE dangerous!!! ...don't do it unless you have the proper training and facilities to work with!

Status: offline 		You'll save about 2-3 bucks a gallon if you brew your own in 25-50 gallon batches. Its a hassle but worth it if you desire to know exactly what is in your fuel. Nitro is hard to get and it is easy to contaminate methanol by exposing it to humid air during the mixing process.

Status: offline 		Well I don't know about a hassle...it's very easy to do. If you can mix fuel for a lawnmower you can do it for our engines too
Recipe #1; 1 cup oil + 1 cup nitro + 3 cups methanol..shake well..bingo, 20% oil and 20% nitro (insert bucket for cup depending on quantity required).
Recipe #2; 1 cup oil + 1/2 cup nitro + 3 1/2 cups methanol.....20% oil and 10% nitro.
The only thing to watch out for is that methanol will suck water out of the air like a sponge so only open the drum while pouring and keep the lid on tight with any cans of mixed fuel as well.
As Gene said, mixing fuel can be dangerous, but mainly if you like to do it while enjoying the warmth of a log fire
The thing to remember with methanol is that it's flammable and you can't see it burning!

If your source of methanol is a race track then likely it will have been laced with an additive that makes the flame visible. It is a baby blue color.

Status: offline 		i mix my own fuel for a moki 2.1 and its very easy i buy methonal from the local race track and i buy klotz 101 oil and mix it 106oz of methonal and 22oZ of klotz 101oil perfect blend for my os.40la my os46la and my mds.58 for my moki 2.1 i use the same blend but add2oz of castor oil the methanol cost me 1.95 gallon and the klotz 101 cost me 32.95 a gallon so my cost per gallon of fuel is 6.00 and have been using this for 2years

The have all the mixing charts and the different types of oils that they sell for model engines

I used to mix my own for large glow motors then went gasers..
Mucho Cheeper...

Status: offline 		I live in Salt Lake City and I have been mixing my own glow fuel for 25 years with great success. It's a very simple process and not hard to get set up to do it. Proper storage is a must but again, it's not hard to get an air tight container and keep it in a dark, cool place. I normally mix 15% Nitro/Oil mix with Methanol, Nitro, Klotz oil, Almag oil and one squirt of Armoral, the stuff you clean your dashboard with. This is the best fuel additive you can have for model airplanes because the Armoral breaks the surface tension of the fuel so you NEVER get any fuel foaming. It doesn't harm the engine at all either. All that is needed is one squirt from the bottle to one gallon of fuel.

Status: online 		Here down under it's fairly common to mix your own fuel. Availability of Shell Racing Fuel A (Methanol) in a 20 litre drum is no problem and Castrol M (Castor oil) can be had in 5 litre jugs. Mix this together for 80:20 FAI fuel, straight up and easy. And no, we don't use nitro here!

Status: offline 		Hey DerFly...next time you need methanol take your Shell drum to a BP or Ampol depot, they'll fill yours so you don't have to pay for another drum. The advantage of Shell is that it's got 3% acetone in it already
If there's a Scotcher Petroleum depot near you then they have methanol too..
