Yes. 7/8" with a few layers of Monokote trim tape.

Here are some pics of the assembly process...
Including: overall fuse; ignition; smoke nipple on muffler; firewall aluminum reinforcement; fuel and smoke vent backflow filters; DuBro nosewheel steering arm for manual choke use.
Expect to get her balanced and throws/smoke rate all setup in the radio on Sunday.

Well its good to hear some builds are well advanced - can't wait to hear flight reports.

I started on my Pitts today, the first task was to rebuild the base of the fin to get it to sit properly on the top of the fusalage. This is now done although I do need recover the fin this evening. I have extended the recess in the bottom of the fusalage to allow my Chip Hyde pipe to be slightly less obtrusive underneath. I have also mangaed to fit both mainplanes today; I remain a little confused/concerned about the interplane struts, my asumption is that the fixing brackets remain secured to the struts when the plane is disassembled but the instructions give no guidance. How is everyone else doing it?

Also it is noticable that the wood into which anchor nuts are fitted is softer than I would like for such a model, the surface area of the nuts is insufficient to prevent them 'sinking' into the wood when bolts were tightened. Light construction is ok but it will be interesting to see how such areas hold up to a seasons flying.

My intention is to keep the plane as light as possible, the alloy wing tubes are heavy and I would like to replace them with CF items - can anyone give me a link to a supplier States side?

So far I must admit I am luke warm about the plane, I love the look but the cost in the UK is approx $1000 and for such a price I would like to see a comprehnsive set of instructions (took quite a while to workout which items of the hardware pack were used for what)/better fitting fin etc. Tell me its a great flyer, that'll cheer me up.

You're welcome!

Won't fly today because, A: it's raining and very windy, and B: we have a little work left to do.
We need to balance her and get the batteries permanently mounted, and also calibrate the smoke system to get the proper flow rate.
But as soon as possible, we'll fly and send more pics.

How about you? When do you think you'll fly?

Howdy, "Gaz",

The strut attachment tabs should remain fixed to the wing. We "red lock-tited" ours into the wing, so you don't have to crush the wood by over-tightening. We are using 6-32 SHCS and nylon-insert lock nuts to assemble/disassemble the struts to the tabs. By the way, I am looking for a trailer to purchase---one that is wide enough inside for transporting this plane assembled. No field setup time!![image][/image]

I agree that the instruction manual left much to be desired. I am glad I had a friend to build for me, and glad that he is very mechanically inclined! Between the two of us, we got it all figured out, as well as a few additions, such as the firewall reinforcement with aluminum angle. Having already had one giant-scale gas motor pull off a firewall, I recommend this addition. I doesn't weigh hardly anything, and adds tons of security.

I purchased my wing tubes at Troy Built Models: http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/WingTubes.htm.
Here is the info, but note the item is out of stock: 7/8" x 30" .035" wall 1.9 oz for 30" $29.95 OUT OF STOCK Part# JAE.875x30
You will need 2 (two) tubes to have enough for the Pitts. But you will save a HALF POUND of weight!!
The 7/8" tubes are as close as you can get. We used monokote self-stick to "shim" them up. (See one of my earlier posts for picture of the wrap). Make sure the inside edge of each tube socket in each wing is smooth. I had one where the plywood root rib was not flush with the paper tube, and it caught the monokote and messed it up (it tried to curl the monokote back)when removing the CF tube. Filed the rib/tube junction smooth, and now, no problem.

As far as the "lukewarm" part, I am very enthusiastic about it! I wasn't real happy it took so long to get here, but now that it's built, I think it is a beautiful ship, and it built very light with the CF tubes, LiIon batteries (also from Troybuilt Models), and DA-50 motor with manual choke.
Even with a smoke system, we are at 27.42 oz/sq ft wing loading, empty. According to Don, at Don's Hobby Shop, the ideal for IMAC is 28-32, so we're at 29.64 with full fuel, and 31.48 with fuel and smoke oil. Fine with me!!

One other modification would be the cowl ring. Also shown in one of my earlier posts. Very secure and clean installation of the cowl, with no external screws! Just make a homemade hex wrench extension by gluing a ball driver into a 12" dowel, so you can reach inside the cowl to put in the SHCSs.

If you are using a DA-50, a manual choke arm works fine (see earlier post for picture), and saves another 3 ounces, or so by leaving out a servo...

V1,

I won't have mine finished anytime soon. My shop is a wreck while a reorganize everthing to accomodate a home remodel and new shop construction (14x28). Work has been crazy and I am always faced with the go fly or build decision for my limited free time.

I am installing the electronics right now on the Pitts. The engine has been run. The standoffs have been ordered.

MAIDEN REPORT!!!

I got a late start this morning ... and had to do a little tuning on the engine ... so I only got one flight in today But it was a very nice flight.

Wind conditions - 10 to 15 mph straight down the runway out of the south.

I fly on a grass field so I removed the wheel pants for the initial flights.

After getting the engine tuned (I switched mufflers and it effected the engine more than I thought it would) ... I wanted to do a good taxi test since most biplanes have a tendency to nose over on a grass field. I taxied slow and fast .. upwind and downwind with no signs of wanting to tuck the nose. Holding full up elevator on high rates, it will turn both directions crosswind which really surprised me. So - on the ground - it is best handling biplane I have seen

I pointed the nose into the wind - advanced the throttle slowly - it rolled nice and straignt - picked up the tail slowly and did a nice smooth climb to about 50 feet. I had to add 2 clicks of right aileron and 2 clicks of up - and it was straight and level at any throttle position from there on out. I made a few passes down our 770 foot runway ... hands off .. .from end to end. As bad as I wanted to flip to high rates, I stayed on low rates for the maiden. Even on low rates, rolls are very smooth and axial. I just made a few smooth laps and decided I would see what the stall characteristics were. I don't quite know how to explain this. From the results of my maiden - this plane has no stall characteristics I pointed it in the wind (15 mph) - cut the throttle to idle and started feeding in up elevator. Once it stopped moving forward ... it just kinda ... hung there ... dead stop in the air ... and started the smoothest elevator I've seen a biplane do. That wasn't what I was wanting to do so I fed the throttle in and went around to land. I lined up - cut the throttle to a fast idle - after crossing the threshold started letting it drop and cut to a slow idle. I got a nice smooth 3 pointer without any sign of wanting to nose over.

Overall - the best biplane maiden I have had!!!! And from the look and feel of things ... this is going to be one great plane!!!!

I will get out earlier next weekend and get a few more flights in.

John, GREAT JOB!!!! I am very happy

bonedaddy41,

Congrats, great report!. What about vertical? Can you snap and continue the upline? Or is that the next report?

Thanks Mark ... and thanks for the help today. I am going to get a fresh container of gas for next weekend ... with a fresh mix of oil. As I think about it ... I may have pulled a Jerry today

Hey everybody, here are a few pics from today. We didn't get any of it in the air .... because everybody was so excited to see it fly that we forgot But at least we have pics of it actually at a flying field
