Toker41 -> Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (12/27/2006 1:40:47 PM)

I've decided that I want to get into ducted fan jets. I don't want something too fast to start, but I certainly don't want anything too slow. I want to know I'm flying a jet. The Red Arrow RTF looks interesting, but I can't seem to find any info on it. Also, it seems I can only find it in RTF form. I'm figuring the electronics are probably junk, and would be using my own TX anyway (futaba 9c). Any suggestions or advice? How well and fast does this fly?
Any suggestions for a different first jet would be welcome, also.

Hey Toker,
Try the TigerShark EDF from Advantage Hobby (not T-20 Figerglass model). I just got mine in the mail the other day, have built it and have since put 5 flights on it. She flies great and fast, but can slow up just enough to come in for the perfect touchdown. Best part is that since you build it, you can use your own equipment! The fuselage is of excellent molded foam quality and pre-painted and the wings and tail surfaces are some kind of sheeted foam. The sheeting could be a tough plastic but may also be some type of glass fiber since strings peeled off as I sanded the wing roots. From first glance the kit may look a little intimidating but my build went very smooth and quick. If you have dabbled in foam kits before, this should'nt be an issue. Good-luck.[8D]

You should check out Kyosho Illusion 45, very beautiful jet.

I think I know the Red Arrow Hawk. Check these links out:

And the stripped-down version:

I presume that Art-Tech make this model, they've got many RTF kits with or without transmitters (the only thing required)

I just ordered one of these red arrows. I can't wait to start putting it together. I have a futaba 7cap coming for it also.

Toker41 -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/7/2007 12:23:08 AM)

I'm using the Futaba 9Cap. Love it. Let me know how your Red Arrow goes.

Mr. Mugen -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/7/2007 2:52:18 AM)

Where do I find the ducted fan unit for it. I have been looking for some time now and found nothing. It says a turbax 48 is needed. I am ordering the OS46VX-DF for it also.

Aesposito -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/7/2007 3:29:26 PM)

get the fan from www.jethangar.com

I just got one for my Red Arrows

Mr. Mugen -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/8/2007 1:14:26 AM)

It says in the description that it needs a turbax 48. Now on jet hanger's site they only list a turbax46. Is the 46 the right size for the red arrow?

hoversmooth999 what ESC and battery and servos ar needid for the tigershark brushless/retrack combo?

hoversmooth999 -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/10/2007 12:07:42 AM)

Hello 3W flyer,
I have really enjoyed this jet. It can be fast as well as slow. With the brushless motor that was recommended for it (red one) I opted to use the Apollo 25A ESC although I'm sure just about any 25A ESC should work well. Also, I'm sure that HS-55 servos would work alright, but I used the HS-56 servos for the strength and precision they have. I did'nt go with a retract set-up though. For power I am using a Thunder Power 1320 mah LiPo, I saw it used in several flight videos with this jet. I am getting a good 5 min. of flight out of it. I know that some people are using TP 2100's but I really don't figure that it would stretch the flight time by much. After 5 min. I still have more than enough spare motor power to make a landing and still have enough to abort just in case I need to make a couple of passes before touching down (for that perfect landing). It is real easy to overshoot your landings with this jet. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. Thanks.[8D]

rocketman-RCU -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/14/2007 9:21:00 PM)

The Turbax 48 and the Turbax 46 are basically the same fan. One was made for the K&B 48 and the other for the OS 46VX. Since the K&B 48 engine is no longer produced, at least is wasn't, the Turbax 46 is the only one listed. They are structurally the same size with only a difference in engine mount. However, now there is the EDF Turbax system that sells for $695 plus batteries and puts out 11-12 lbs of thrust.

Is anyone flying the RTF version? Is the stock motor and electronics any good?

Mr. Mugen -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/16/2007 7:06:36 AM)

I am going to sell this jet and buy the A-7 Corsair II from JHI. I am not very impressed with it's structure what so ever. I like the platform of the A-7 much better. Anyone need a new in box red arrow?

Toker41 -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/16/2007 10:38:01 PM)

RTF? What do you want for it?

meps -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/17/2007 2:56:28 PM)

I have one of these Red Arrows on the way. What did you not like about the structure. I know it's foam but for something to use as a beat around airplane, this didn't seem like a bad deal.
Thanks, Steve

marm -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/19/2007 8:59:39 AM)

think some are talking the foam red arrows kits, and others, the larger glass fused red arrows kits. Foam structure ones like at EJF.com, and robotbirds link above, are 65 mm fans that run 400 to 480 class motors. The larger glas version red arrows is a 120mm fan setup. Most of the foam Arrows seem to come with a fan, where as the larger one's are built for gas 46 type fan, so if you go Electric you have to convert it, and the 120mm fans it will take are the E-Turbax, Schuebler DS-94, or AP1200 fan.

This is the jet I bought. I says all the good stuff in the item description. I bought a mini ventus from this guy 2 years ago but never built it yet. The ventus seemed like a much better build. I am not going to buy and more ARF's due to poor craftsmanship. I will start building them again. I only stick built one plane so far and it was a blast. Here I go again.....wish me luck...lol. I want to build a warbird first. Not sure which one yet but will very soon.

marm -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/21/2007 2:31:56 AM)

Yeah thats the one that runs on 120mm. You can go E turbax, AP1200, or DS-94 and also TF4000 will work. AP will be cheapest fan, but you will have to run a Neu 1527 or 1521 motor, about $400 dollar range. E-turbax can be had with motor and ESC from Jet Hanger Hobbies its a great deal for a whole setup and is ready to run. TF 4000 and DS-94 are light and exotic, but will cost close to 1K for everythign to run them.

Man, I really don't want to spend that much on this. I'm looking a the foam RTF for $169 U.S. I really don't need the Tx, though, as I us a Futaba 9C. I really don't want to get to into building one either. Is ANYONE flying the RTF?

r-c-guy -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/27/2007 1:14:42 AM)

Hi,

I am on my second rtf for 169.99. Now I have 2 batteries. It is a blast. I use their flight electronics and have not had a control issue yet. I mated their flight electronics to my Tx as their xtals are changeable. Their transmitter does have limited range. Flight speed has been radar timed at about 60 mph. The stock motor is good but not enough thrust to reliably loop from any attitude. However, It will go vertical and do victory rolls and it will loop from a slight dive. Roll rate is fabulous. I eliminated the landing gears and covered the bottom of the plane with mylar tape. Hand launch, belly land on grass at 10-15 mph. Everyone at the field wants to try it....

Toker41 -> RE: Red Arrow electric ducted fan for first jet? (1/27/2007 2:24:11 PM)

I would be discarding the stock Tx, and using my Futaba 9C. I would probalby replace the Rx with a Hitec 05S, since I have a few of them laying around. I just don't want to get to into the building end of things. So tired of having to learn new things with this hobby. With this one, I just want to fly a jet without a lot of hassle. I want something faster than my brushless prop planes, but not something that I need a much bigger field to fly in. However, I don't want to spend $169 to find that I have bought some "tyco" toy that is far from "hobby grade".
