Hello Bob and everyone,

I measured the speed last week with a radar gun: 200 km/h (125 mph) with a 10x10 and the Mac-Pipe. And thats about prop whash speed at 13.500 rpm.
I flew it with the original exhaust on our anual air show, since on that day no noise rules applied. But a I did not have the feeling that it was faster. Must try a 9x9 with the original pipe . At 17.500 rpm that would result in a prop whash speed of 240 km/h (150 MPH).

Now I shortened the exhaust manifold of that mac pipe a bit. Let's see if I can get into higher rpm.

By the way: The wings seem to be holding up. No problem wiht the ripped and covered wings. However the heat shrink stuff that Kyosho puts on is really not very nice. Why don't they use regular Oracover? It is a shame. Such a great model - with the high quality category and all. And then they use really bad covering that starts to peel of even before the first flight.
Of course - ideally - they would make an all-glass fibre version. That would be so much better!
Another problem can be the landing gear. I whish they used slightly stronger steel. It tends to bend after a few harder landings (engine out...)

Cheers, Martin

I radar speed tested a Kelly this weekend at the OCMA field, and clocked it at 101 coming out of a dive, and 72 in level flight. And this gentleman was using all china no name brand running gear...... It was a blast to fly, I expected it to be rough to fly, but no, it handled like a **** cat. everything very predictable and stable.

oh, and this was using very cheap china electric motor, speed control, and LiPo Batteries.

Would you mind sharing which motor, Battery and ESC you are using? I am on the fence whether or not to go electric or nitro on this plane.

Thanks, Terry

Finally put my kelly back in the air today. Been wrestling with motor options but settled for an OS 50 Hyper heli motor I had lying around. First off, the CG seems to be too far forward. What are most you seeing? From what I read the 65mm is too nose heavy. Also, I need to get my MAC pipe mounted but here is my dilema. I have to use the OS 3/4 inch extension that comes with new bolts. Problem is they are 3mm bolts but the MAC pipe uses 4-40 bolts. I was getting 13,400rpm with the stock pipe and 11x6 apc, files great with tons of verticle, but I want the 500 more rpms and 2oz less weight that the MAC has to offer. Hope the lighter pipe will help the CG issue. Problem is I cannot find any 4-40 x 2.5 inch hex cap screws anywhere. Anyone got any ideas? All my local hardware stores only have 1 inch or less. Please point me in the right direction if you can. I really want to fly this plane seeing as I have had it for months. Thanks in advance for any replies.....

What cg issue? How can you has a CG issues?...LOL just seems odd.

I don't think you are going to find a 4-40 screw that long...... Use allthread with locking nuts.

hello lcyrace,

CG: I am flying at 75mm. Even 80 is all right for snappier turns...

As for the mac pipe: I used No 6-32 UNC threaded rod that I cut to length and nuts on top. (4-40 sounds awfully small. Are you sure it is that?). This is good also, cause the rod will be bent to accomodate the tapered spacer. Don't know if you are aware of it, but one of the exhaust spacers is machined at an angle (forward and outward) as to accomodate the cowling. See second picture below
You have to make spacers to fit the threade rod, cause the nuts don't fit right on where the rod exists the engine. (At least this is the case with the Jett engine and I suppose with other engines as well. you'll see....) I took some nuts that I had lying around and machined them into a tapered shape, then drilled the threads away, so they will slide onto the threaded rod.

In the photo you see only one nut but I am using two on top of each other for extra security...

Just got one today. Got a YS 110 going in her. Has anyone though of retracts on this thing? The wing looks real skinny but imagine how clean the airframe would be. Anyone have any imput on this idea?

One of my budies is sheeting the wings on his kelly, Looking at how everything is built, you would need to modify the wing ribs for a wheel well. I would use the Kyosho retracts if you attempt this. Kyosho's retracts are lower profile than most.

got to fly my Kelly on the weekend for the first time. Running an OS .61FX in the nose with a pitts style muffler. this was my first crack at a speed plane and man it really zips around. Lots of fun, but i hate the landing gear, way to flexible imo. No idea what speed i was going but way faster than anything i have ever flown.

Hello Bob, hello everyone,

here come the hard facts. I am currently at the model airfield here in Germany. I installed a Data logger with pitot (speed sensor), altitude sensor, rpm sensor..
Here are the data. What can I say? more than 200 km/h (222.3 was max. That is 138.16 mph. Not too bad! And about 15,000 rpm with the slightly shortened mac pipe.

Cheers, Martin
