Ok.. where do I start? I have been building the PT-20 for the last week and I first must say that it is a beautiful bird. The body appears to have been made nicely and in good quality. I have installed an OS .46AX engine and once I finish up with some small fixes, it will be ready to fly. I'll post what I think about her flight characteristics later. As for now, I would like to hear additional opinions on what you think of this ARF.

As for issues with the model, my biggest gripe are the instructions. There is a lot that wasn't explained about the building of this plane. For example, How does the tail wheel get installed? I went ahead and purchased a Sullivan tail wheel which appears to be way better. I would recommend that Nitro Models update their instructions pamphlet via the CD. Another issues I had with this model is the wood rod control system. I changed to steel rods on my ARF and may consider using someting stronger since the distance between the servos and the tail control surfaces is far. Landing gear: this needs to be reinforced. Any hard landing will apply force directly into the wing. I added additional epoxy and still am open for further suggestions. Landing Gear Wire: It took me about 2 hours to bend the wire just right where it was straight and not interfere with the wheel skirts. I think a better solution should be explored. Aileron levers: Mine snapped when I had to add a modified plastic clevis because the plastic clevis that came with it, was too big. Of couse the list goes on and on for small minor items and parts. I usually do some upgrades to my ARF's but I doubt a beginner could get this ARF together easy.

Overall, I think the instructions are the big problem with this ARF. If anyone has any questions about this build please post here. I'll do my best to help. I'll add pics on here later.

cheers.

Hi S3eker

If you're still around I'd like to hear more about your PT-20 ARF. I just started on mine a couple of days ago and so far I agree with all your comments.

I'm sure I will benefit from your experience and any pictures.

Frank

Actually there is nothing wrong with the wooden rod system. These are more than strong enough.

Your "enemy" is side flex. If there is any lateral movement of the rods, this will translate to flutter.

In any case you should affix a piece of wood to the formers, with a hole in it, that will hold the rods and prevent side movement.

The wooden rods are actually better than the steel ones when you have a long length ( which is why they are used ) because they do not permit lateral movement.

The included clevises work - BUT - they break easily of you bend them out too much.... or as far as we could with other manufacturer's clevises, so you have to be careful with them if you elect to use them.

As you've noted always re-inforce the landing gear area.

I've only owned a couple of planes ( notably the gassers ) where I would call the landing gear areas "strong enough" as the ARF's come out of the box.
This unfortunately seems to be consistent accross the industry... all ARF's could stand gear re-inforcement.

Hi opjose

I'm still working on the wing and haven't got to the fuselage or tail assembly but I share the opinions of S3eker.

I haven't got to the landing gear either. But how can I reinforce that area? Pull off some covering and try to add more structure?

With this FRP fuselage I don't see how I can get inside it to add supports to the control rods. I think I have to go with the design intent.

I'm hoping S3eker will come back and update us on his success!!

On the PT you are best off carefully cutting the covering ( to ease it's replacement ) along the adjoining areas.

Then with the area open, add whatever additional ply supports you can.

I've seen people put in a big glob of epoxy and throw in a block of wood to attempt to add re-inforcement.

They forget that the intent is to spread the "load" over the widest/biggest area possible to lower the localized pressure.

A few long ply "sticks" against the gear block extending out to the formers often will do a much better job at preventing flex which will break the wood.
