Hi guys, anybody ever repair a Phenolic Wing tube socket? Unless somebody can give me a better idea then my ideas, Im giving up on a set of wing panels and will just order a new set. I have a 33% Lanier Extra with one wing panel that has a bad tube socket. What I mean is, this plane was bought from somebody that had a mishap and it was said it had been fixed. After close inspection the wing panel in question, has a tube socket that about 1/3 of it has a nice split about (1/16" to 1/8" gap)running from the root down (1/3 of the way down tube from root). The split is running lengthwise not circular. The aluminum spar wiggles a bit side to side. My questions are these:

A: Should I try cutting the tube out down to the start of the split and replace with new tube from split to root? That way I would still have the correct incidence from the good part of the tube running toward center of wing panel

B: could I epoxy the split, and try to get the wiggle out and would things be ok????

Any fresh ideas would be nice. I will probably just purchase a replacement set of panels, but just looking for suggestions I may not be thinking of.

Thanks in advance!

NOTE: This is a Foam core wing panel... Sorry forgot to mention it early in the post.

Buy a replacement phenolic tube from TNT Landing gear.

http://www.tntlandinggear.com/store/shop/wing_tubes.htm

Scroll down to the bottom of the page for plain old phenolic tubes.

Remove the damaged tube from the wing. Cut around it with a knife and try to keep it as clean as possible when you remove the tube. Now cut little round donuts of balsa or lite ply to fit around the new wing tube. Use a hole saw to drill the holes in the donuts. The holes must be very tight fitting to the phenolic tube. You'll need a donut of balsa for each rib in the wing that is going to hold the wing tube.

Slide the tube in and place a balsa donut on each rib in the wing. These will align and hold the new socket in place.

Plut the wing on the plane and run the aluminum tube through the socket. Get all your angles and incidence set.

Glue all the donuts to the existing ribs and glue the phenolic to the donuts.

Thanks for the reply! Most Helpful! Forgot to mention though, this is a foam core wing panel. Getting the tube out will be difficult.

Fixed a few of em
Thanks to the foaming properties of good ol Gorilla and Pro Bond --either will work
if the aluminium tube is sloppy enough in the phenlic tube - add a layer of Saran Wrap to it by first rubbing the tube with vasilene to make the saran wrap smoothly adhere - then a little talc on the tube to allow it to slide in place without wrinkling the wrap -
then slit the sheeting above the tube with a razor knife
remove a 1/4" wide section down to the phenolic - use some scrap white foam cut to fill the slot and then spritz water into the slot- shake out excess and drizzle in glue and wipe it around--insert the foam and a 1/8" thick piece of snug fitting balsa.
tape or weight it in position- sand smooth when done -pull the tube out -but first give it a day to dry!
the foam will ooze n fil all cracks n voids if you did a nice even job.

i did the following:

cut out the bad one.

with the original size and length, use a fiberglass fabric, the white thin one, cut it to ur size.
take a rappup attached plastic-the sticky one for rapping food, and roll it over ur CF/ALU boom.
over that, roll the fabric and add 30min epoxy for each cycle of roll, 3 layers will do fine.

let it dry
remove your new tube, cut it as u like, and glue it into wing .
make sure to use the boom as your reference point while glueing..

good luck

remember to check the tube alignment ( root rib angle) and the dihedral angle of the tube before gluing. Clamp a wing tube to a bench and measure the wing tip height to make sure both wing panels are the same.

Just a quick update in case your interested: I removed the section of phenolic tube that was cracked (about 8 inches worth) from the root rib inward. It was not easy, but actually turned out quite well. I cut into the wing removing a litte bit of foam to get to the tube. I cut the tube at the end of the crack with a slightly modified handsaw (just for this purpose) and used needle nose plyers to pull it out in small pieces... the rest of the original tube is solid! Keeping the rest of the original tube in place, will help keep the original angle setting ect. I found a gift wrap tube that is identical dimension of the aluminum tube, I mean a perfect fit completely tight fit! I wrapped it in fiberglass cloth approx. 4 times around and epoxied with 20 min epoxy. I let it drie overnight, cut to approx size and its a perfect fit into wing. Now Im going to try to join the old tube and partial new tube together without gap. Of course, I will glue this new fiberglass/cardboard tube into wing with the aluminum spar inserted all the way for perfect alignment. I just need to figure a good way to join both halves of the tubes together. Once I glue in with expanding foam glue (gorrilla) everything should be nice and tight! There is still at least 9 or 10 inches of orginal tube left in wing panel, so I feel if glued in properly I should be ok..... any thoughts on that???? Just dry fiitting everything, it feels very nice and tight. Once completed, I would just bolt the aluminum spar into this wing, and leave it there. This was the best way I could think of using some of my ideas and yours to get what I wanted. I appreciate all your suggestions and help! Just hate to give up on things. If I can I will post pics later.

Heres some pics of my progress.... Got to love that Gorrilla Glue! Im liking the way its turning out, but will likely use this wing as a back up. Im still going to order up a new set from Lanier when I get the chance. I just like to tinker around....

Note: If you notice in the pics, I made up a coupler about 1 1/8" wide made up fiberglass to help join the partial new tube socket to the original. It seems to be nice strong and better than ever. I will next fill the cavity with foam, and resheet the area. This wing and the other still has more work, I need to fix up the root ribs on both, as the light ply rib was crunched at the spar entrance. You may see that in one of the pics. This is a good project plane, lots of potential. Wont be flying anytime soon though lol......
