i havnt done that 1.wanted it 2 go slower, more realistic? am i right in saying this as u have definatly more xperience on this sub than me as i havnt even sailed it yet.
its been a beautiful day 2day but i cudnt get 2 sail the AKULA as i had 2 clean car & go in2 work 4 cupla hours. planning on next weekend now weather permitting as British weather NOT reliable. u sure sail yours a lot crunch GREAT.sounds great where u r.

Undertaker, when you mention a battery mod--are you most interested in power, endurance, or radio range ? All three equally?

All I've done with bats has been move to 2000 mah rechargeables in the sub, which saved me a mound of battery purchases (and required extra compensating foam); then I got higher-rated rechargeables 2650 mah, which means I can have longer sessions before I start worrying about bats going flat. I should upgrade the tx rechargeable too when budget allows.

Hey bro. I think we're becoming the fraternity of the Motorworks-dolphin pin.

Done the prop mod on several subs--four, I think. Doubles the speed. If you sail in a pool, it puts you more on par with currents. If you like to cover long ranges in the outdoors, prop modding cuts the sub's transit time.

On the downside, you are right--your speed will be above scale--in still water. But since I sail in lakes often and sometimes on windy days, I'd rather boost power as much as I can so my Wally sub can get back to me before the waves pull it downriver or otherwise out of my radio range. If you have currents to fight and are afraid of the sub going out of radio range, I definitely recommend this mod...otherwise if you're not afraid of losing control of your sub in rough water, just depends how much you want to come out on top against pool currents. My thinking is, though, don't use still water to define scale speed: Watch your sub fighting a stout current in your favorite pool, and decide if you'd like to consider the result of doubled power while you sail through the current as "scale speed."

Also on the downside is torque roll, which Navy subs can also suffer at high speed. Thanks for the kudos on the anti-torque mod, but I can't take too much credit: I got the idea from a Navy dolphins-wearing sailor who told me what HIS boat had to combat torque roll.

Definitely sorry about work precluding your much-anticipated sub trip this weekend.

Heavier or lighter batteries may mean rebalancing the sub...resetting the float level, at least, since batteries are somewhat well-centered in the sub...but the great thing about heavier batteries is Motorworks puts them low where they help keep the sub upright, and Styrofoam is cheap...
I tried putting lighter rechargeables in once (1200mah)...the sub just kinda lolled around minus its heavy keel, so I switched back to the regular Duracells I'd been using. I hope if you have to get into rebalancing it won't be too extensive. No fun to sit in drydock when you're really wanting to finally get out there and cruise. Of course sticking with your current batteries is always an option, though.

Painting my models...well...
I thought the "USS CHICAGO" detail atop the sail was a bit overkill, so I thought I'd paint it over. But I liked the thought of being able to change my mind, so I used my kid's Crayola water-soluble paint. When the sub had sailed 15 minutes, the water had knocked all the paint off and I was back to what I'd had before. That's the most I've done with painting. I may get into painting more now, though: The antitorque mod is ugly-ugly, and I'd like to paint over that green Conny fin !

About the Motorworks selection...a Skipjack would definitely be my speed...but I feel like I've already got one. You see I compared the proportions of the Wally Chicago/Dallas...just one metric, probably the most obvious (height of conning tower vs boat's overall length)...the Wally "LA-Class" proportions match the Skipjack more closely than that of any other US sub.

They don't make the Motorworks "LA-class" scale--it might as well be a Skipjack !

A lineup of scale sub models: http://www.motionmodels.com/ships/subship.html

Aren't the Kilos a diesel sub the Russians make for export? Are they recent or older?

>The handiest foam mod I've employed has been to buy a styrofoam cylinder about an inch or two wide and jacket the prop shaft with it; when I'm trimming the boat and need to adjust the stern buoyancy, I just trim the cylinder shorter or add length and that takes care of the stern.

By the way, if you put heavier bats in and decide to jacket your prop shaft with Styro...

You have to remove either the prop off the shaft, or the shaft from the motor housing, to get the Styro cylinder in place around the shaft.

I've broken props easily, so I prefer to pull the shaft out of the motor housing.

The prop-shaft gear inside the motor casing generally slips and slides around once you remove the prop shaft. That's no disaster, but unless you want to sit around tapping it back into place, you then have to open up the end of the housing to move the gear.

Easiest thing to do is to prevent the gear slip from happening. So before I pull the prop shaft out, I hold the sub with its nose pointed straight down, and keep it that way the whole time until I get the prop shaft back in.

Just thought I'd mention !

I spotted the Shark sub at a Walmart store. The nose slopes downward. The shape and color suggests a military sub but it does not appear to be a scale model of any real sub. It takes 4 AAs and appears to steer by rudder.

Hallo...

Took the sub out today with the bottom rudder pared down. Ran with a 5-10 degree starboard list when in-motion, surfaced ( 30 - 60 degrees noted as normal before the antitorque mod). But that's still really good for a prop-modded Wally sub I've got configured to surface-cruise with decks awash--as its Navy namesake does. All I need to do to correct the list, I think, is replace a little of the silicone I'd pared off after AT-mod sea trial 1. No hurry...it's a straight cruiser now...it was great to see!

Didn't stay out long...it's freezing today ! (We don't get a lot of this at our latitude). Ice storm predicted for tomorrow. Can't believe I was out today.

1200 or 2100maH? hmm. I have both in the house. The 1200s I don't use in the sub, but just by their rating the 2100s should last almost twice as long. Endurance can suddenly become important if you take the sub to a lake, or anywhere else where you wouldn't be able to see and/or access a downed sub. For the same reason, it's nice to have batteries that don't tire until after you do....I worry less with 2100s.

Batteries will generally be lighter the less their maH rating is. As for 1200s, I notice my 1200s are lighter than regular batteries: If I have the sub trimmed and floated for regulars and try 1200s, I go belly-up. I'd be interested to know if you can get enough weight into the battery box to use 1200s. I've never tried this, but I think I might put fishing sinkers into the hull as close to the batteries (to keep the balance) and low (for stability) as I could get them. Personally, I prefer 2100s because it's easy to shape foam with an Exacto knife, and you can shape it so it doesn't shift around too easily.

I know you're really wanting to get in the water. If I'd been using regulars, and had to go with your rechargeables one way or another, I'd go with heavier batteries and Styrofoam. I favor the stability of heaviness low in the hull with foam placed higher, and the adjustability of foam. You might try a hobby/arts-and-crafts store. Some foam is better than others--I had some homebuilding-type foam that was beady and fell apart, and that was annoying. I buy Styro doodads at my local Hobby Lobby and slice them into different-sized bits for my RC subs.

On my hour-long lunch breaks I drive a few blocks to Town Lake. Really nice to be working so close to a RC-sub-floatable body of water. Do you go to Menorca often? What's the water like ?

Haven't seen the Wally Shark yet. I love to speculate what it's going to look like, though. Now, that radio-operated rudder...I think that would be a Wally first ! I doubt the Wally WWII sub--the predecessor of the Dallas/Chicago--had an auto rudder. Thanks for the Shark post, Buzzster !

I would think any Motorworks dolphins pin would have to be plastic, wouldn't you ?

Keep a zero bubble

Hee hee. Nice catch, Subhunter. Probably a nice production he's put a lot of work into. Wouldn't mind having it, but even the $6 blue light I want for my sub is on-hold.

It's an electronic document--sent by e-mail--but he says 500 available. That I don't get.

Increase range to 25 feet...hope he doesn't mean surface range. The antenna mods I've got to the rc and tx antennas, described in the Wally topic, let me control my sub past 50 feet surface range.

A total rip-off!!! From the things I've seen, you'd get much, MUCH better mods from the Walmart Sub threads here....and for FREE!!! I'm a bit suspicious from the information the seller has given us, are the mods made by himself or did he take all the hardwork that modders here have contributed and selling them for profit?

Hmm. How could you have bought one if on Ebay the purchase history says none have been sold?

Hello, Undertaker ! Do you mean the pool is saltwater? I've heard it repeated on this board that "saltwater reception is measured in inches, not feet." Sounds like it would interfere--with keeping the sub down on any dive below a few inches, though not with cruising the sub across the surface. High chlorine or mineral content in the water should give similar results.

>ama zd 2 u were sailing sub in cold.reinded me of the beginning of hunt 4 red october
Hadn't thought of it, but I dig the image! Man it was cold...and today we are iced in, unless I want to take a trip on my after end straight down our hillside. It would be hard getting back up the hill going home.

Холодно / Трудно сегодня, товарищ капитан Cold today, Comrade Kapitan !

Трудно ... и скользкий... ...and slippery *

Too bad about the green canal. We have a river around here that is by summer beautiful and glass-clear, but in winter gets choked up with islands of weeds. I am glad to hear you have gone with heavier batteries and hope they will give better-quality runtime!

* You know that's not really what Marko said

Well, imagine you're a modeller who's made numerous helpful mods to the walmart sub and has shared them with the world on this forum... Then, out of nowhere, some guy has collected all your posts and has made the mods into a book and earned $30 bux out of it from Ebay. All the while WITHOUT you knowing it! But if he is an honest modeller who wanted to sell his own work, he has the right to do so, even though I feel like he should be contributing them to forums like this like all of us.

Anyways, what is done is done. Back on topic!

Captain's an old hand here on the RC subs board, Subhunter; his knowledge is broad and deep...I can testify he has helped out people wanting a little push getting started in RC subs.

Wow. You've obtained a copy from this guy in your town, yet Ebay says no copies have been sold.

If I were you, I think I'd consider Nemo's response. I think the seller should take that offering of Ebay.

I hope someone chimes in with the mod manual soon. This topic goes pretty dead in winter. I last remember hearing of the mod manual late in 2005 when Wal-Mart was phasing out the Chicago/Dallas and rolling out the Seawolf/Conny. RC Sumo had it at one time, I think.
