Captain's an old hand here on the RC subs board, Subhunter; his knowledge is broad and deep...I can testify he has helped out people wanting a little push getting started in RC subs.

Wow. You've obtained a copy from this guy in your town, yet Ebay says no copies have been sold.

If I were you, I think I'd consider Nemo's response. I think the seller should take that offering of Ebay.

Crunchy,

Who are you calling old??

Besides, I've still got lots to learn myself! I'm sure there a lot of people here who are much better at RC-subs than I am...

PS.: Can anyone PM me the mod file for the Walmart Sub?

Since the prop mod was a recent topic of interest, I thought I'd add a couple of notes.

For the prop mod, I've always been blessed with a supply of parts from previously-junked subs.

If I'd had to improvise, I think that instead of adding a second shaft right behind the first as I normally do, I would have added a pen's ink tube. But I wouldn't have added the tube to the end, because the shaft's prop end has teeth at the end that are supposed to grip the prop, and the ink tube doesn't have those.

The logical next idea, then, would be to saw the shaft in the middle, so teeth on both ends are preserved (the motor end has teeth for the motor gear about 1/2 inch up the shaft). But that gives you no teeth for gripping the pen-tube joint in the middle: I once added--to the end of a stock shaft which was at the motor end--a custom-length prop shaft I'd cut, and found because I wasn't using two complete prop shafts with teeth on each end, the motor spun furiously but the prop end slipped in the smooth joint and didn't motivate the sub much. I addressed it by switching the custom-length shaft with yet another prop shaft from a Seawolf up/down thruster that was a bit longer but had the same teeth; probably you could get the same results by custom-cutting the shaft in the middle, then adding the desired length of pen tube, then using silicone or hot glue to hold the joint.

I would just hope a glued/siliconed joint would never give out when your sub was halfway across the canal: Silicone caulk does flake when you stress it. Maybe with gluing a failsafe would be in order, like the clamp I thought I remembered Gulfstream used in his prop mod, with a metal ink tube.

Well SubHunter sent me the mod manual he bought on ebay and I took a look...

Guess what? It turns out that many of the pictures were from the Walmart Submarine Threads on this very forum! Then again, there were no author names listed so I have no idea if the person selling it was the one who made the original mod list that was metionned on this forum a while back... Still, I'm very suspiscious!

Hello Undertaker! I cheated typing the Russian words, I have gotten lazy in my old age. There is EZ stuff available now, as opposed to 10 years ago when I learned to type Russian at a ponderous pace. Go to the front page of http://www.freetranslation.com/, write something in English, set for English-to-Russian and click "Free Translation," and you too will transcend the language barrier. I just copied (Ctrl + C) to the message I was typing.

The translator spits out stuff that would sound very funny to a human Russian half the time, but it is mostly intelligible and not bad for cyber !

That's neat that you have a canal out your door. Bathtubs are great for checking how she floats and balances, but open water is easier to see how she runs. You'll see things on a long run that didn't show up in the length of the tub.

New Wally subs Shark and Gator...hee hee! I'll keep buying Chicagos and Dallases. I may buy one of the new ones if I end up with a Chicago leak and need to refurbish. I like the look, it's just not my speed.

Glad you like the prop mod posts. I hope you will find them helpful. I also hope we'll get our hands on the mod manual, which I'm afraid may not have been updated in a year.

Very generous of you to offer the Skipjack as a treat ! I remember how I had trouble with that simple hull when I was eleven years old trying to get periscopes to remain standing up cemented, and not having the patience. It'll be a hoot to see how it goes together this time. I hope for a handsome result. Thanks !

Hey captain,

You said you were sent the mod manual, do you think you can email it to me, or was it sent my snail mail? I am too lazy to go back through the entire forum to find all the mods. Help is appreciated thanx

I just had a lake run to try the AT mod on a bit longer drive.

I had thought the excess down pitch from that one plane would be a problem, but it made the sub much easier to dive, which it does smoothly. I can’t put buoyancy at neutral/slightly negative as a military sub would practice to maximize control or speed—but it’s planing under, which has a feeling of authenticity in spite of having fixed fins. I don't need the dive prop until complete submergence starts to accelerate the sub upward. My little $20 dynamic diver really looked at-home a few feet down today, driving around.

I'm not too afraid of losing the sub to excess down-planing. It has about the right amount of buoyancy positive --for a calm day like this, at least--plus the up thruster; and I suspect weeds and/or leaks, not "reverse lift", of killing two of my subs--only on one do I half-suspect “crush depth” ...which couldn't have happened if I hadn't kept pushing the sub down.

This sub is easier to control than it's ever been before. With those fins fixed making the stern tend up during forward motion, it'll eat batteries faster if I have to run the up thruster to surface cruise, but how long do I really care to stay on the surface...heck, it's supposed to look like a nuke (and my bats are rechargeable). As long as it has its light, I can see it submerged at night. Submerged, the extra displacement of plastic above the waterline adds enough buoyancy to overcome the down-planing and make the sub want to rise when moving forward.

I think the big area where it could use more control is lateral turning. That's always been a Wally sub deficiency. I can't stay dived and turn even 30 degrees. Time for me to reconsider the rudder mod from way back in Wally subs I. I've dropped the rudder idea before because instead it's handy--when I'm bringing the toy sub in to my pickup point--to turn in-place so it can take just the right angle to come in underfoot. Navy subs have tugboats in-harbor...Wally captains have the turn-in-place! But I think with the distances I like to run now, the rudder mod is looking good, finally.

Hmmm. I've heard the new Wally boats may have radio-operated rudders, but to me the rudders look fixed. I think I see a horizontal prop in the stern prop cage. I'm curious !

Could it be that the transmitter battery has gone low? Or maybe some water got in the receiver... If possible, open up the sub and check for moisture in the electronics compartments.

A mile walk! That's a lot of anticipation built into your canal trip. Sorry to hear it was a big two-time disappointment.

Sounds like a leak or poor batteries. But you say it reacted when you controlled it from another part of the house...batteries should have been okay as long as they weren't run down in the test phase before you set out for the canal. New rechargeables do need an initial charge to be fully up-to-snuff, so maybe they gave out earlier than would be expected on a full charge ?

Worked for 2 seconds after hitting the water...suggests a leak. But very strange that it worked fine in the bathtub. It does seem to suggest something different about the water.

>the radio waves not pennetrating the canal water.
So it really does seem to be the water ? Salt water?

Yes, lots of antenna may be a really good thing--my boat has four to six inches of antenna running out the top of the periscope, the antenna inside the sub being a total of 3 times stock length. And this is for non-salt water... Are you pressing buttons when the sub antenna's submerged in the canal, or is there a problem when the sub antenna's still above water? Does the sub still work okay now when it's immersed in the bath tub?

Regarding float level: Indeed, those rechargeables will cause a sub that has been tested with regulars to plunge straight to the bottom.

I don't know what to say about that canal water--salt, mineral, or whatever may be in it...except if that's really the problem, you might want to look for a different ocean. In 2005 with Mapquest.com I found a pond close to the job I held that year, and the pond was so secluded and undiscovered, I felt like I had my own private ocean. Alternately, I had the apartment pools. But usually my oceans are public bodies of water all the locals know about--I just visit at off-peak times.

Welcome back, Sirnumskull

By the way, guys--there are now TWO tiny nuclear subs at the bottom of Town Lake, Austin.

Not sure what happened after it slid down out of sight. Sub had reserve buoyancy last time I set it in motion. Lots of debris in the water today from the ice storm; maybe some of it snared my boat.

Well, if it does, my phone number is etched on four surfaces of the pot-metal weights, and written in marker a few places in the battery box. I may get to find out whether anybody scuba-dives that attractive lake.

Last night I'd meant to find my old ID card, a nice non-water-soluble source of my name and address, and also put it in the battery box or silicone it to the keel. Too bad I didn't remember to look for it before I set out this morning.

>ow often u sail in the dark?

I was starting to get out maybe once every week or two after dark, before the spate of unusually cold weather here. The lights always let me know where my sub was on a night run.

I've found tiny LED lights aren't a help, though, when a sub disappears on a day run. Plus I think the light had less than 5 hours left on its current batteries when my sub disappeared around 1 pm, so I doubt it would have been helpful waiting to spot it after dark.

I've lost three Chicagos and broken another. I think I'll start naming them so I (and whomever unfortunates I keep yakking to about them) can tell them apart: Chicago Auditorium Shores (lost today), Chicago Town-Lake Deep, Chicago Koi-Pond , Chicago Car-Trunk . I thought about being more positive and naming each after the place where it had launched--but two were christened in the same place

Undertaker,

Sorry about your compounded troubles with sub and PC ! I'd say run that antenna up and get some altitude. Doubt the aerial end of your receiver antenna will be responsible for any leakage, I don't think anyone's ever had it come in that way (maybe at the black-box end of the antenna, but from not the end that's in the air, or from any joins outside the black box).

Have you tested the sub since bringing it back from the canal? Just wanted to make sure I understood right--sub behaves like you expect in the tub (and still does), it's just the water in the canal playing tricks.

Losses or ...depends on whether I still had something I wanted to work on, and whether I thought the family budget could take on a new sub for Daddy. Right now I was in no hurry to do the next mod, and I think I can get a new Chicago or Dallas; I got to test out my anti-torque mod and found it worked rather well, even captured a little video. This was the best sub I ever lost, yet I'm kind of OK about it ! It happens.
