Thanks Dave, yes they did look fast, the helmet cam works very well, weve had no end of trouble filming the f5d machines,

The few times we ran timers, average times were in the 1:14 range.

Standard 424 times are about 20-30 seconds slower.

We aren't that much faster, but the shorter course makes for more action.

Hi guys, as promiced a couple of photos,

Everything was chucked as far back as possible, i used a heavy 6v reciever pack , but because of the long nose the best i could get was 60mm cg, recomended is 70/80mm, the fuel tank to has been tacken back as far as possible, but not quite on the cg, when our glorious english weather (not)clears up ill get it test flown

cheers

I don't know Darren but I've built very few quickies that did not end up with all, the servos , reciever and battery, behind the trailing edge of the wing to get them to balance correctly.

Hi Dennis, thats what ive seen in most other q500 planes, this one has a 51/2 " nose from leading edge to bulkhead, the servo tray is pre fitted and limits how far you can throw everything back.
if the tank was fitted into the nose as recomended the cg was at 50/55mm so more weight would be required, with the tank full it made aprox 15mm difference to the cg.

Preference for all my racers inc my sport 40 is to have the tank on the cg, cant get it on this plane, the large tank bay at present is empty other than fuel lines and a mini servo for the throttle.
Weve recomended to Topmodel that the servos be fitted aft of the trailing edge as say the viper, that will give more room for moving weight around and will allow the tank to go on the cg and to shorten the nose bt at least 1".
After speaking to Topmodel well complete the test flights as it is, then ill be making the above changes to it, then report back to them

Darren

Hallo Q 500 pilots,

here some pictures of my Grand Chelem RC equipment instalation. With my modifications the CG is at 70 mm without any additional weight on the bag. The servos in the wings are more aerodynamical in my instalation than the original way with the plastik mount.
I think the pictures say more than 1000 words.

Best regards Michael

Hi Michael

I read your post on RC Network.
Like Mario asked, where are you putting the reciever and Battery?

Hi Michael, what was your all up weight,(mine was 4lb 4oz) and how did you find the fitting of the pushrods per manual,

1 picture of my internal set up, reciever as you can see, mini servo in the tank bay and a whopping 6v reciever battery at the rear to get 70mm cg, and 26g lead needed in the tail.
and one of the pushrod set up at the servo end,(z bend used to clear wing retainer area) together with a z bend at the rear exit i mananaged to get a good bind free movement, original instructions/methods were out by 40 mm and binded severly

your wing servo method is the same we are using on the F5D models, definatly better, let us know how you get on with the maiden flight

spoke to Topmodel and they said they will be making alterations that were put forward to them.

Hallo dylyon,

battery and receiver is under the servos in the fuselage left and right.

I use a 800 mAh with 2x2 inline soldered, very small and long like a stick.
I use a schulze small receiver.

I am waiting for spring to make the first flight.

Best regards Michael

As posted by me in the Pylon Forum on rc-network.de. The fuselage width is about 3mm to less according to the US (AMA) rules and Eurocup - 2mm less to german rules. The wing also has constant chord and thickness over about 4,5cm to less! So the Grand Chelem can't be raced without getting disqualified until the manufacturer changes that. Or everyone who bought one does that himself, but the time that is needed for that is quite unsatisfactorily. If the manufcturer solves this and some other things in the next production lot it could be an interesting ARF.

My order was denied for some reason out of TopModel, not really sure of the reason. The email I received was hard to read, then again, his english is better than my french!

After hearing about some of the issues due to the long nose, and the exhorbatant shipping costs, it doesn't bother me that the order was denied.

Daven, my order was confirmed so am awaiting arrival...........whilst there maybe some 'hiccups' with the model, they are easily resolved most times. The long nose appears to be one of the major comments but that is not really a problem with sensible equipment layout, regards trevor henderson, nz

Hi Bud, no its completly different from the pred 2, it has got some faults which are mainly within the fabrication side, which can be rectified, and confimation from topmodel is that they will be addressing some or most of them as soon as possible.

flight wise personally i find it better than the pred, ive notched up about 10 flights so far and getting on with it with well, usual tweaks set up required as all planes to suit individual taste, as mario has pointed out it could be an interesting model, guess well find out when the season starts,

Darren

I'm going to miss the trip also, its damn cold up here, and a little warmth would be good. The new job is going well, but I probably won't make another race before Ft. Lauderdale. Not sure why, but its probably one of my favorites, the race is relatively low key, the airport, hotel, and field are right next to each other. And, well, theres always uncle Al's wings

Now if I can just get RB to calll for me.

Hi Guys its been a while since this thread was started, the news is the new updated version of the Grand Chelem will be availible from september this year, it appears that (hopefully havent got it wrong) that topmodel are not selling direct, but can be obtained through various retailers listed on thiere web site, from the States to Australia. www.topmodelcz.cz

looking at the pictures and the email I was sent from the company it looks like most of the adjustments have been made that were put forward, the coulour scheme has been changed and looks pretty nice.

The company has also made availible thiere engine mount, after using a simular home made version I found it better than the Ali mount used for the preditor, allows easy exit points from the bulk head for fuel pipe and throttle cable.

Not having one in front of me I cant say exactly what the alterations are, they have confirmed that they have kept to the rules as mario had pointed out that were incorrect on the old model, hopefully I can lay my hands on one in september and report back as to what its like.

As for the old chelem (modified)I have has been running well and now trimmed Im pleased it runs very smoothly, now fitted with a Dubb Jett ive kept the built up wings and modified only with a fibreglass bandage on the wing joint, not raced yet but has stood up to some tough throwing around, hopefully theyll last till race day.

cheers Darren uk
