I watched an interview with George Lucas today and he brought up the movie "Red Tails" again, his much anticipated movie about the Tuskegee Airmen. The making of this movie has been a long time dream of his and it sounds like he is finally going ahead with plans to produce the movie. After a nearly 40 year drought in Military aircraft movies it looks like we will soon have another following last years "flyboys".

read a book about those guys years ago, quite amazing feats they achieved despite the obstacles placed in their way.

Hope they do a movie and tell the full story!

cheers
Peter

That would be truly excellent. I would settle for a good story about any of the WWII fighter groups and this one is a keeper.

have you read the book about them? I can not recall the title but is not a new book, think I was in my late teens or early 20s when I read it.

Ther are many good books out now covering the Tuskegee Airmen. I have three of them myself, and used one for documentation for one of my Mustangs. The last I was in direct contact with the pilot who gave me a lot of the info to complete the model.
Just go to any good library and look up the Tuskegee Airmen. Good hunting.

That Sir is still being debated, I would not make statements you cannot back up. There have been reports but they have not been confirmed, and research is still being carried out at this time. My Christmas present for 2006 was a Tuskegee painting autographed by about 6 of the fighter pilots themselves, "Fighting Men of the 99th". A BF109 is seen going down in flames after being hit by a "Red Tail". I received this from my F-16 Fighter Pilot son. I will proudly display this painting on the wall with other WWII memorbilia/paintings signed by "Doolittle Raiders" and the "First man to Break the Sound Barrier". I realize the accomplishments of the Tuskegees and all of their race. However, all men and women in uniform have made their sacrifices and have grown a little since then. I have chewed dirt and sand and dodged bullets with just about every skin color there is. I never judged anyone by their color, only by their actions, efforts and deeds. I wish all of you a prosperous New Year. Now, back to glassing that 86" wing for the P-51B...

It was in the "Washington Post," Which is circulated in Washington D.C.... so get over it, NO squadren had a perfect record just ask the U.S.A.F bomber pilot who was SHOT DOWN and found him self in the same P.O.W. camp as the heroic but unfortunate Red Tail shot down at the same time as the United States Army Air Core bomber.

Even if they did have a bomber get shot down under there cover I find the most amazing aspect of there history is that they put there lifes on the line for others FREEDOM!! Something that they did not get to enjoy at that time in history here in the country they were fighting for.
Really look foward to the movie with Lucas doing it there should be some great flying scenes.

Wasn't there a movie about the group done around 1995 with Cuba Gooding Jr. in it? Started with them being allowed into flight school, and had alot of the AT-6 training in it?

Yes, there was. It was on HBO if I remember correctly. It also had that kid that played Bill Cosby's son in it, Malcolm Jamal something. Not too bad of a flick, and you have to love any movie that has Warbirds in it, especially that many.

I just watched that movie two nights ago. Good film but they forgot to pay for a good air combat consultant to keep the flying shots accurate. I hope Lucas doesn't skimp so that we don't have to see fighter scenes with drop tanks mounted then not mounted then mounted mysteriously again in flight.

I'm pretty sure Lucaas wouldn't need to hire anyone to keep from screwing that up. Kind of like in Pearl Harbor, when the Dauntless dive bombers attack Battleship Row. Good point, I forgot about that part. All said though, I am pretty sure that is the only movie that has ever been made about them.

It is a good film and a great story. Those guys put up with a lot of crap that others didn't even have to worry about. I'll be first in line for the DVD if Lucas makes a movie. I don't go to the theater... have a nice home theater that surpasses most commercial setups and I can actually feel machine gun fire and ordinance explode.

I put my vote for the 56th!!!!! but please note guys my father put his a on the line back in 1957 while stationed at Elmendorf AFB Alaska because he rented a house off base for a friend who was discriminated against and sub leased it to him and his family actions DO speak louder than words.

History must be accurate in my book.

Also it was Lawrence Fishburne in the HBO film "The Tuskee Airman."

Was just PMd' and have corrected the spelling of Hollywood actors' name being Lawrence Fishburne. who stared in HBOs' "The Tuskegee AirMEN."

Nobody’s voting on anything here. The thread is about a George Lucas film O (which I am very excited about). Ok some of the history maybe in question. But these facts remain, General Benjamin O. Davis, made sure that protecting the bombers was the number one priority for the 332nd. They were not allowed (by Davis) to follow the USAAC rule of following an engaged fighter till the end, Davis told them that the number one priority was protecting the bombers and not racking up individual kills, so if they hit an enemy fighter and their were more fighters engaging the bombers they broke off from the wounded plane and engaged the other fighters. This was one of the reasons their number of lost bombers was so low, and number of individual kills for that matter. From my understanding, they had never lost a bomber to another enemy aircraft, but that didn't mean that they didn't loose a bomber from flak or other reasons, but with latest findings they might have, which still doesn’t change my feelings one bit.

If you're looking for accurate history then you would realize that the 332nd biggest achievement wasn't not loosing an enemy bomber but as an important stepping stone in allowing this country to guarantee freedom to all of its citizens. In many circles in this country it was OK to OPENLY consider African Americans as second rate citizens and that they "did not have the intellectual ability to effectively control such complicated machinery". They paved the way for generations of African American aviators, and gave dreams to thousands of young men and women who may have not had them before.

Ramcfarland I think we all read your post the first time; however repeated post against the Tuskegee airmen I think is only making yourself look bad. The 56th fighter squadron for sure is/was one of the best, but posting that here is like trying to put them above another when in fact they were all hero's that were just doing there duty for us all, and trying to put one over another isn't doing anyone any good.

So the facts are out no group had 0 losses during escourt missions NO GROUP and thats some one sided words to say other allied groups were too busy racking up kills as a priority over their assignment to escourt allied bombers. Which I for one find un acceptable.

I believe that the above should read, that they lost no bombers, TO ENEMY FIGHTERS, durng thier escort missions.

If you are looking for accuracy in history then you better be prepared to do a bunch of research. The old saying about history being written by the victor is more true than it should be. The victor is not always the the one that was declared the winner. Many times it is the one that gets to print first and gets a following. It doesen't matter whether it concerns war, economics, invention, etc, many times it is the story that gets passed around the quickest or is put out by those that are perceived as being "in the know" that sticks.
In the case of the Tuskegee Airmen the more amazing thing is that they got some recognition for their efforts while the accomplishments of black units in other parts of the armed forces have gone largely unoticed.
My screen name Gremlin Castle comes from My Uncle's B-24 that was part of the 98th bomb group stationed in southern Italy during the time of the Red Tails. He was shot down flying Sugar Baby on 24 April 44.
His description of the living and operating conditions at the airfields would make anyone proud of the Tuskegee Airmen or any of the others for being able to carry on operations against the enemy despite the appalling situations that they faced.

I loved HBO's "Tuskegee Airmen", in spite of all its defects, because it concentrated on being a fighter pilot and staying human during it all. Several of the surviving 332nd FG members were consulted during its production, and the fact that they were happy with the end result speaks volumes. As a Vietnam vet, I can't say I'm happy with very much that has come out of Hollywood since those days. "Hamburger Hill" is the only one that comes to mind at the moment. The others are little more than crap, especially anything made by Oliver Stone.

I can't wait for GL's version of this marvelous story. Maybe we'll get to see all the aircraft actually flown by those men, starting with P-40s in North Africa, if memory serves me correctly.

My current Mustang project, a 1/6.8 Topflite, will be colored as below. This is one Jack Erickson keeps at his museum in Tillamook, Ore. Being a "reconverted" Cavalier, it's all filled and painted instead of beat up old aluminum, and I think it's gorgeous.
