OK, so you're saying that the heli doesn't 'prefer' to turn one way rather than the other due to the direction of rotation? All right, well I certainly will continue to practice those left turns. It's nice to have something to work on and nice when it's flying well. Too windy today though, storms coming this way soon I think; but I have been able to fly outdoors every day this week so far either before or after work. Nice.

I think I'm going to put the Bell-Hiller back on and try that again. First attempt wasn't too good but I put so much new gear on all at once it was impossible to tell what was happening. Now that she's back to flying well, all I'll change is the Bell Hiller so we'll see.

Thanks for the reply; hope your flying is going well.

Help with left turns...

Hi all. Well despite the troubles right after returning from my two weeks away from the Blade CP+; it is flying well now. Seems just the same as before. Good flight times and only the occasional glitch which doesn't really impact forward flight that much.

My question today is about left turns. My right turns seem very smooth; they're easy to do, look nice, easy to maintain altitude and are well coordinated. The left turns are not pretty. They seem to be steeper and lose more altitude quickly. They're more difficult to maintain a smooth coordinated turn.

I'm guessing it's to do with the direction of rotation of the main blades but can someone explain it and give any suggestions about how to think about it and approach turning left to make them smoother? I'm trying to practice, practice, practice!

Thanks!

Scott

Scott...unless you're having glitching/servo problems, I'm thinking that it's just your weak side that you're gonna need to practice more. Left is also my weak side...even in planes when I fly them, but I'm an expert plank pilot (not as good as Rick Barr or Jay though...LOL). Just watch what you're doing and try to smooth out and coordinate your stick movements in a left turn, but don't over compensate. Just my $.02 worth.

It seems mine dont care if it's left or right turns, but I do. I'm just not as proficient in a left banking turn as I am in a right banking turn....and I can see that, it's just not as smooth in a left turn.

Welcome back to DY...glad you're on the sticks again. I never crashed a sail boat, but I did crash a sail plane (which I thought was an impossibility).

Left vs. right turns...
To correct the left drift induced by the thrust of the tail rotor, a little right stick is needed.
If you play with the trims to hold a non-drifting hover, have a look at the attitude of the bird and you will notice a distinctly "right skid down" appearance.
I wonder if that could have anything to do with the preference of right over left.

Scott,

Left turn vs Right turn,

It's the result of Gyroscopic precession. Left turns are more difficult, because the helicopter behaves differently when rolling into a right turn than when rolling into a left turn. During roll into a left turn, you will have to correct for a nose down tendency in order to maintain altitude. This correction is required because precession causes a nose down tendency and because the tilted disk produces less vertical lift to counteract gravity. Conversely, during a roll into a right turn, precession will cause a nose up tendency while the tilted disk will produce less vertical lift. Stick input required to maintain altitude is significantly different during a right turn than during a left turn, because gyroscopic precession acts in opposite directions for each.

Bottom line, left turns are harder to control and takes alot more practice to make them look as smooth and coordinated as the right turns.

Vertical Fin::

More for appearance than anything, it may help during SFFF (Super Fast Forward Flight). I wouldn't bother with it, more headaches than it's worth.

I'm sure this clears it up everything...

Boils down to what I said though...."practice" to make it look better. LMAO...leave it to Dave for the technical stuff (is he good or what?).

Ray,

Just an FYI / Trivia, the reason for right skid down appearance on RC Helicopter is cause by the main shaft being perpendicular to the main frame. Basically straight up and down. Commercial and military helicopters, the main shaft is tilted 1 degree to offset this phenomenon. On RC Helicopters, if you tilt the tail rotor gear box 1 degree, ccw. It would then be level. Just more things to think about.

But now he knows why! And that it's not his fault, it physics and the old dreaded gravity.

On the right stick, a little left and down is the key. Oh yes, you said "Practice" LOL Later...

DY,

Welcome back our friend,,, hope you're feeling okay with the chemo treatments. Just take care and listen to the Doctors.

Wow, sounds like you have your hands full with the helicopters and the new arrival of a sailboat.

Never throw anything away.. , I still have parts from three years ago and sometimes they still come in handy...

Yes, you've got the bug, and you'll come around, just push the stick alittle forward.

Again, welcome back and take 'er slow for awhile,

Dave / Choppesrule

Jay,

You're 90 percent there with the glitches. Glad you found the crystal problem.. I'm a duffus boy when it comes to glitching, not totally, but pretty close.. Even a funky servo can cause the same symtoms. Expo on the pitch, don't have a clue.. I'm not a programmable TX kinda guy, at least not for a month or two... Nice Tom Turkey, but where are you?

God Bless and tell the family, Choppers said Hi...
