Ahhhhhhhh, fun and relaxation. A good idea for the seattle area informal flyers club (aka, myself and my flying buddy Bill) since we had some awesome weather this weekend we decided to make it a 2 day event. Saturday morning by 10:30AM we were at our second choice field as the primary field was being defiled by some nasty softball hooligans.
First up was the Century Swift 16 and its amazing history of glitching 90 seconds in to the flight. It does a quick little tail flick to the right as if to shake a fly off its tail. I decided to keep it in the air and take my chances. What a excellent idea! Flew the rest of the battery pack out (4S 3850mAh 14.8V TP ExtremeV2) and was anywhere from 4 to 30 ft in the air. That heli looks so natural when above you, however I am still leery of trying any FF with it yet.
Next up was the TREX, that has to be my favorite heli at the moment mainly because it flies so well and is so stable. I have never crashed it (well I did lose the tail drive upper pully on its maiden because i set it down in tall grass) and except for changing the pulley to a steel one no parts have ever been added to it. Slow FF back and forth and some piros at 20 - 30 ft and i was done with that.
Bill was up with his Hurricane 550 and did fairly well (at least I thought so) but he cut his flight short because he was unhappy with it ballooning up and down so much. Of course he was running 570mm CF blades too, thats a lot of disc to be catching air. Flew and landed safley so far.....we were both happy.
We both set up our Slow Sticks and flew those thru what batteries we had for them. I went thru 3 and Bill did 4 I think. I practiced alot of inverted flying and some loops with a hover at the apex, then a quick flip over to finish. I am sure there is a name for it but I have no idea what it would be called. We finished our flight day with a quick run of the GWS Estarter and Bills newest addition an MS Composites Unique, A midwing 3D EPP foamie. The Estarter was feeling very sluggish and tail heavy and also requires a lot of room to fly. I had it to the edge of the flight field a few times and was wondering if I would be hitting trees, buildings or my nephew riding his bike around the perimeter. Well, Bill was able to take care of my nephew. As He was taking off the 6 yr old decided to turn his bike and ride full blast towards Bill and his plane. Sadly, Bill had to cut power and nose it in to the right to avoid getting his prop impaled in the spokes of the lil guys bike. Kind of a 2 part mistake on my part, not talking to the nephew first and not paying attention before the eventful but short flight. Mistake made ...........lesson learned!
Saturday was a sweet flight day............ Sunday.......... lets just say that blood was spilled before any vehicle left the ground and there was a couple of incidents. One involving a new battery pack and long slow spirals to..................

To be continued............................

Ray 'ere,
HBK2 arrived today and batteries are charging and, yeah, it needs better "feet". must see if I can make the superskids work.
One of our design team passed away this weekend after a fight with pulmonary fibrosis so things are pretty sombre at the office.
Kinda blustery this lunch but we'll see what happens.
Later gents....
Ray

Arrow always with the cliff hangers Blood spilled, huh? That's not good.

Ray, sorry to hear about your co-worker, a bit a heli flying always lightens my spirits. Sounds like your going to have some fun with the HBKII.

God Bless All!

Ray 'ere,
Well, I got her (HBK2) home after visiting LHS to get spare skids...ordered spares from Jags.
Just got back inside after a flight.
All I can say is....wow...!!!
Just a little minor trim and we had no problem getting off the ground.....holding hover at 4' was a minor yo-yo and tail control is sweet. I have no idea how long the flight was but it was a whole pack and airborne the whole time.
It looks like the rotor is about 2" greater than the Pro.
Going for a second pack later, meanwhile, the 400 is calling.
Crash...I did order the update for the flanged bearing belt guide.
I'm going to fly her as she is and tweak awhile.
Back later,
Ray

Sundays events............... We met about 11 AM at our favorite flying field that was defiled the day before and found a father and his sons doing some batting practice. We figured that we could set up by the school which has a 30 ft by 50 ft asphalt slab to take off and land on. Usually we like to go to the edge of the baseball field and take off and land on the baseball diamond. All of our flights are over the baseball field but we stay high enough to not interfere with small workouts such as the one going on at the time.
Both Slow Sticks were battery'd up and as we were comtemplating our flight paths........... Bill accidently hit the throttle on his TX. His APC 9 x 6SF prop slowly sidled up to his ankle and took one good slice into his ankle. I bet the next time we go flying he wears steel toed boots and snake guards........heh. He's a tough guy tho......didn't even go back to the vehicle for a bandaid. I would cried like a schoolgurl dumped on prom nite.
We both did a little flying and the father son combo wrapped up thier practice and graciously gave up the field so we could fly our planes a little more comfortably. We both had our Slow Sticks going and as soon as they done were rounding up balls we each took a turn flying our large helis. The wind had picked up some so we stuck to hovering. We both had solid flights with the helis and turned out attention back to the planes.
I installed a fresh battery in the Estarter and flew it for about 4 or 5 minutes and brought it in for a landing. Because i had some battery left I took it back up and got some circuits going and did a couple of loops. The wind was blowing steady at about 10mph by then at flight elevation so I was flying into the wind to do my erratic loops and sloppy rolls. I had just finished my downwind leg and was head upwind again and started to do another loop when We both saw something white fluttering in front of the plane and downward. By the time it was 10 ft away we both yelled "battery!" and I continued to try and land the plane........... Ummmmmmmm I forgot to read the part where with no power you have no control over your plane. As I finally realized that I wasn't making the plane do slow lazy circles I decided to start running after it and see if I couldn't catch it before it hit the ground. With the wind blowing it away from me as it was still circling I fugured there was no way to catch it but it looked like it was going to land on the edge of the field in some faily tall grass. Murphys Law kicked in as i watched it go over the side of the embankment that is the end of the baseball Right Center field. I heard it hit something and when i got to the edge of the embankment I was looking at 40 ft deep and about 8 ft tall of blackberry bushes. Figuring I was gonna also get bloody on this trip I started down the embankment and was looking for the plane when i heard a " Don't worry, its ok and i have it right here."
Turns out, it landed in between two Juniper bushes that lined the back of the guys yard it landed in. I apologized for the intrusion and he told me they had been in the backyard watching bill and I fly our planes. He and his Son watched my plane from the time the battery flew out until it landed in thier yard. No damage at all to the plane except it pulled one of the wing strut sticks out of its holder. As i told him it would take awhile to make my way thru the blackberrys he asked me if I wouldn't rather use the trail alongside them that comes right to his fence. I don't know if its just luck.....or true dumb luck that follows us but I was happy to have my plane and also happy that I didn't hit anyone with a flyaway.
So ends another event filled weekend of lazy flights, interrupted by short burst of sheer terror. Only on a sunny weekend can one find happiness and despair followed by relief.

BTW choppers......... I noticed you didn't bet on the outcome of this story. Jacki and I had a good laugh when i opened the letter from you! The contents will be framed as well as the letter and will hold a place of honor at my work bench. I will take pics of the framed contents when we get it put together. Jacki says Hi in between giggles. Yer such a nut old friend! Ty for the laugh and also the memory, I may have to copy the first story and install it with!

Hope ya guys enjoyed this one, my narrations are brief and as clearly stated as i can remember them.

Just riviting.......LMFAO, I had days like that. I pushed it hard tonight....wind let down to about 3-5mph. I set forward trim in the 400....hand launched, trimmed out ailerons and rudder using HHG mode...I flew that thing like a plane (man, it gets going pretty good). got bored with that and did some long runs out, snap 180, and nose in runs over my head from both directions. I did that back and forth for about an hour...it was fun. On the southbound run the wind kept shoving the heli to the east which was un-nerving. Going northbound....the wind didn't have as much affect. I flew the he!! out of the 400 tonight.....can't wait to get the EXI-450 in here (my next bird). The MX-400 has been discontinued...when I trash the two I got, onto EXI-450.

Dang, that's some funny stuff right there! Sounds like you got pretty blessed with your plane as well. I bought a new Futaba SkySport 6, back around 1996, and put the Rx and goodies in a 1/2a 2ch high wing called a Ranger. I finally got the crummy motor running and I gave it a toss and in that same motion my finger switched the plane off. It flew very well without any control nice lazy circles while climbing. I picked up some of the biggest rocks I could find to try and down it. I eventually chased it in the car and it climb so high and went so far I lost sight I thought I had an idea of where it went down so I put business a cards in mailboxes with story and reward( $50) and talked to who ever I could. A buddy who had a Cessna 180 took me up as well and we flew grid patterns over the area with no luck. Three days later I got a call that someone had my plane. It pays to write your information on the inside of your plane! It flew 2 miles west and 1 mile north of where it started. I had no idea it had gone that far!

God Bless All!

Jay....I love storys about fly-aways (LMAO). I was flying my first AeroStar .40 off a country dirt road over a corn field (July...1988). It was HOT that day too. This is all open farm country, corn and bean fields as far as the eye could see. I got on the wrong side of some high-tension electrical towers and lines.....it flew away. I had NO idea where it crashed but I knew it went down between the lines and another reference point a mile away across a couple bean fields. I went back to the father in laws, grabbed every niece and nephew I could get my hands on and gathered them all up. I told them the finder gets a $20, loaded 8 kids in the back of my Ford Ranger, away we went. After 3-4 hours searching in the heat...one lucky kid found it (LOL). The crash site was over a mile from the takeoff point. I give the kid a $20, we loaded up and I took them all out for soft ice cream. Had the plane re-built and flyable in less than 12 hours (LOL).

Arrow,

You beat me on your second part of the story. I was going to post "I'm not bettin' on this one"
From your first story, Well, the envelope said it all, My word is Good.

Jacki,
Stop giggling! I tought you guys may get a laugh out of that one...I guess you did.
Take care and big hugs from the Chopper.

Bobs,

Jeeez, I take a couple naps and I'm waaaay behind. And I read slow, to boot, so that doesn't help matters.

Things going slow here in Indiana, or should I say fast. The flippin' wind never dies here, I was on vacation last week. Not one flyable outdoor session. Been cold and rainy for this time of year. Whatever happen to " Global Warming", that's another issue, but it's a SCAM too. Gives all the Numb Nuts something to worry about and talk about, I don't have time for that. I just look out the window to see what the weather is..

HBK2 is up and running fine after Crash #5. Took the extra time in set-up, so I can hover on a nickel. Use to be a dime, but I'm losing on the "Cost of Living"

I don't remember if I told you guys, I forget easily. I did get a
