Indiana Chopper here, with a Maiden Flight Report on the Trex 600

It's been windy and cold here all day, I finally said, "Srew it" , and went for the gold. Wind between 10 and 20 mph, gusting.

I don't even know where to start. Things today went absolutely flawless, everything I was expecting and much more. We all know that the bigger they are the easier they are to fly. This is my first big heli, and now I'm a true believer in that statement. Even in the wind, as Jeff mentioned in an earlier post, with a 600 size. you'll say, "What Wind". He was right on the money. I didn't even notice it in solid hover. The Trex 600 weighs in at 7.3 pounds, that certainly helps with windy days.

I was just in the backyard and did nothing fancy, hovering, forward and backward flight, sideways and all. The yard isn't big enough to fly any circuits with a 600, plus I have to watch the trees and power lines. To coin a phrase, the 600 is "Rock Solid". I did a few punchouts to see how the G770 3D gyro and 8900G tail servo worked.. Totally awesome, the tail never budged an inch.
This was the first flight with that Brick 5,000 mah battery, I only flew it for 3 1/2 minutes as a test. Later, I'm gonna throw it on the Bantam charger and see how many mAhs I put back in the battery. That'll give me a rough idea of flight time, I can expect from the pack.

All in all fellas, it was just an Incredible 3 1/2 minutes of fun. Hmmm, I was Never Nervous about the maiden flight either. I know I can fly pretty good and I know I can build pretty good. So between the two, it all worked out to pretty good.

Here's a few pictures Mrs. Chopper took.. Nothing special, just proof of the puddin'..

JPEE, I TOLD you I'd do it today...

Dave

OOOHHH GREAT ! I get the privilege of being the FIRST BOB member to congratulate the INDIANA PILOT on his promised TEST LIFTOFF
of that great GREAT T-REX 600

CONGRATULATIONS, BIG MAN !!!!! the photos look real GOOD.... you have a much larger yard than mine here.

I suppose you saw my struggles trying to keep the miniature heli airborne in what the back trees show was a stiff breeze.
but the little mSR trooper just kept on going.

I LOVE IT ! AND this heli/hobby is finally getting somewhere. YEAH ! ( for all of us ) JAN 05 / 2007 : the ARROWNAUGHTIC posted the number 1 post of this whole thread.....we are two months away from being here for 3 years.

now if the FLU would just leave .....[>:]

First...Rick...I could see the branches blowing around, you would NOT have held the MCX that well in that kind of wind....I'm impressed with you new little "heli".

DAVE.....YAHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOIIIIEEEEEEE! GREAT NEWS INDEED. Now...wait till you get it in a field, you'll LOVE it for sure. OH....BTW, never any doubt on the gyro. My research indicates it's the BEST of the BEST in that size gyro....bar none.
Congrats on a job well done!

Let's see...you worked on A6's, I worked on E-2's.....both Grumman GARBAGE....that would make us CRAZY right there. Never flew in either E2 or EA6B (right next to us), I ain't that CRAZY.

Thanks guys for the congrats on the Trex 600 maiden.. I appreciate it..

I already have the brick battery charged for tomorrow. I used 1966 mAh's on a 3.5 minute flight. Using some extremely complicated mathimatical formulas, , I'm good for a maximum flight of 8.3 minutes. I'll go for 6 minutes, my brain starts to fry after awhile.

Rick,
Great outdoor video, sorry it had to rain your day out... Looks like it handles pretty good in that wind. Oh, my home, I've only got just a tad over 1/2 acre...

With the T-450, I didn't gain to much weight-wise... But still less "mass" for those motors to swing, and even during my Autorotation video every little bit helps as these gears were ground down for that video even. Smoother drivetrain I'am guessing, and still very rigid... Like I did to the MCX awhile ago, I just applied it to these gears as well. I've heard the only reason there is so much mass there is for the molding process to help keep them true... An so once there already molded and in my hands, things change... LMAO...

I'am hoping for the T-500's gears, I'll gain a bit more but we'll see...

Jeff,

How many spokes are ya gonna take out of those main gears. I'd start of with 25 percent and go from there. LMAO! Don't forget to drill out several holes in the flybar paddles. Put the dremel on hyper-speed and get r done.

The daughters house is 75 miles away, my Aldis flying field is only 4... However, I talked to Leslie (country girl), we are heading up there in 2 weeks and I'm taking the Trex 600. If weather is to bad, I'can fly it in her Big Ass Barn.. LMAO ! Punchouts and all. Guessing 30 foot roof line.

Have a good time in your trimming the weight off the 500. You'll do great, I know that.

Well, after a test flight and trying out a few Auto's, the next project will consist of no flybar paddles... LMAO... I'am going to do the mod that some have done and going flybarless using the stock T-500 head components. This will be hairy, as there will be no stabilization system... Some have gone this route... I just want to feel what's its like, and if anything I'll grab the Mini-V bar system to stabilize it. You can have a better success with a no stab system by doing it mechanically by assisting in using either heavier blades, or like Vic will find out soon, with a multi-rotor head unit. So we'll see ! LOL.....

Yeah, the "Liposuction" pile from the T-500 is slowly growing... LMAO

Yeah that will be awesome to at least try and get the 600 out to another bigger flying area for sure... Hek, ya almost need a T-250 ! There pretty cool ya know....

Jeff,

Your always one-step ahead of most of us.. Now you're going flybarless.. So cancel drilling holes out of the paddles.

I saw a video a year or so ago, some guy went flybarless with nothing at all done to it except take the flybar and paddles off. You could see he was struggling at first, but then calmed down.. I'm sure that head spead and pitch curves are really critical on a flybarless system. Got ya covered on the battery / flight times with the 5,000 mah brick. I'll increase flight times by 60 second intervals, until I see it about 1000 mAh's left.. I DON'T want to Srew up a 250 dollar battery.. Ya, know what I mean.

Kyle,

Thanks for the compliment on the 600. I'm really impressed and happy with it. A long time getting there, but worth the effort...

And you're always welcome to the "Chopper Mansion".

Jay,

Buddy ole' pal of mine, so happy you've been finally busy with work... I'm on the other side of that.

November 27, next Friday is the last day that the dealership I work at will be open... Retirement for me, gonna finally relax for awhile.

Vic,,,, I'm gonna love retirement that's for sure, but don't know how long that will last, before I get bored to tears. I know down the line I'll get something part time to occupy my time.. Oh, BTW I did get the fingers, hands and other parts of my body burnt with the old soldiering iron, when I was in Nam. A couple of them, I still have scars.. LMAO !

Jeff and John,

On your Logo 10 and Trex 600, respectively. What type connectors are you guys using on the ESC and main power battery.

I've got the deans connectors on mine, and not to thrilled about how difficult they are to snap together. The setup on the Trex 600, makes it difficult to grab them easily to plug them together.

Jeff, I know you talked about the EC3 connectors but they are under rated amp wish for a big ass brick battery that we use.

Check out the EC5's, rated at 120 amps.. I think I'm going this direction.. What do guys think?

Oh great...... We know what's gonna happen now..... Your going to be getting into some good ol' mishief now ! Possibly some more "Tip Of The Day's" though...!

Here is a good tip that works SO well... I learned this from Capi (HFG) over on HeliFreak... You know how those darn canopy grommets hardly last and get torn after awhile ? Well, what works great if you can find the right size, is those rubber servo grommet thingies ! WOW, the rubber is so much more durable, and they fit like a glove on my cnc canopy posts for the T-450 and the T-500... His have lasted for a few years on his canopies, and so I'am pumped about not having those squishy loose fitting stock grommets on my heli's anymore. So much better... They may not look the greatest being square, but I'am all for functionality here... LMAO...

The ones that worked the best out of the variety I have are the ones that came with the HS-5245 MG servo's for the T-500... Since I have 4 units of those servo's, and never used the grommets, they work the best.
