So any more DR-1 flights this weekend??

John - I noticed you have negative incidence on the top wing. The scratch builders/designers in my club told me the tail, middle and bottom wing should be zero degrees incidence with the thrust line and the top wing should have a positive incidence of 1 to 2 degrees?????

I am an Electric flyer so I will ovbiously be moving everything as far to the front as possible! I have an engineer friend who has designed some gear drives. This way I can spin a nice big prop. Anyone figure out what the diameter of a scale size prop for this plane should be??

Good luck with the flying this weekend!!

Dave

Nope. This weekend at my field was electric fly in. I have one electric plane so i attended. I won 50 bucks! anyway I think John is probably right with the 1 degree negative on top wing. I have 1 degree posative on mine and it still has a fair amount of down trim to fly level. As I write this I just had an idea I cant believe I never thought of befor. I will check incidences on my GP DR1 it seems to be set up perfectly..................................antiquefer.

I flew mine this weekend with the Zenoah G20ei. The plane weighed in on a fish scale at 10 lbs, but I think this was a little heavy. The power system was perfect for this plane. Seemed to be just a bit overpowered to be scale, so it flew around at about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. Like most everyone else on here, I needed a lot of down elevator trim to fly level. I'm sure that I have the same incidence problem that everyone has. However, after the first flight, I noticed that the hub of one of my wheels had cracked. I fixed it at the field the best I could and put it back up again. On the second landing, the plane ground looped about midway through the landing roll-out. The strut support mounting blocks broke through on the top wing and the cabane mounts broke on the middle and top wing. I've cut the top wing open to begin the repair, and it is no wonder this thing broke. The mounting points for the metal struts on the top wing are very small (maybe 1" x 1" pieces of lite ply that is glued to a rib and a cross piece only. These blocks were only supported on two sides, so when the plane tumbled, the glue just popped loose. For those of you still building, you may want to address this issue. I would hate for these to come loose in flight.
The good thing is, it is an easy fix, and the plane flew very well. I am planning on extending the wheels out about another inch on each side to try to help with the ground handling. I know this will change the scale appearance, but may help to keep in in one piece.

Swatman. I broke the wheels on mine on the first landing. They are not made very well. Replaced them with a pair I found in Tower hobbies 4.5 inch. These seem to be much better, although they needed painting. If mine is still ok by this winter I may address the mounting points you mentioned. Glad to hear the Gasser worked so well. Makes me want to replace the Saito 90 in my GP DR1 with one............................antiquefer.

I can't say enough about the little gasser. It took a few minutes to get started the first time, but it has fired up very quickly everytime since. The factory settings were right on and have needed no adjustment yet. It seems to be a great little engine.

Hi, Didn't get to fly her this weekend, Gave lesson's to a new guy in the club, And Sunday it rained all day, Mine came out at 9 1/2 pounds, I don't like the sound of those wheels though, They really crack ?, I guess i'll have to grease in all the landing's Ha!, I did have a chance to taxi it around in the backyard to check the engine and stuff and the .75 seem's to be plenty of power to move it, I'm also the field cutter for the club, When i go up to cut Friday I'll bring it with me.

I've never gone Gas, But i was looking at that G20 a little while back, That would be my first choice, Glad your having good luck with it, Must really rip around, I'd watch out for flying it fast, After hearing about the top wing plate's, I'd fly it as scale as possible, Don't want to "loose" anything Ha!, I have a Helmet Cam i use to take my vidio's, I'll try to post a vid of it when i get it in the air

Thanks for all the posts on this little beast..I've got one in the mail as we speak and it's great to hear that it flys well...
If 2 wings are good, 3 must be even better!
Cheers,
Carl

While doing the repairs from my ground loop, I've beefed up the wing supports as best I can. I don't think that they are going to come loose again without some major structural failure. I've contacted Nitromodels, and they are sending a new set of wheels. I've got to come up with some way of strengthening them, without detracting from the looks of the wheels. If these break, I guess I'll have to spend the $30 for a set of Dubro vintage wheels. I should have the plane back in the air this weekend.

Flew mine today. Takeoff-good, Flight-good, landing-no good. Came in a little hot, didnt hold elevator long enough, and nosed over in the 6 inch grass. No damage. Time to mow again already!

Waiting on my nitro dr1 kit wich is due Monday 07/-07. I just built a big stick and am ready to try flying again for the 1st time in 19 years! I may wait until next year to fly the dr1. I was an advanced flyer in the late 80's but am nervous to fly again. I think it would be wise to have someone put er up for me the 1st time!
