Oh man, someone just had to scratch at that old wound, lol. But while we are on the subject.
I didn't have any problems with the covering till I needed a replacement set of wings. When I first got the plane there wasn't a wrinkle in on the whole plane. I have yet to touch it with an iron or heat gun. Best covering job I have seen on an arf UNTILL I got the replacememnt set of wings. About half the ribs were broken out of both wings, on the first set I received. Tower replaced them immediately, Man how I love the customer service at Tower! The next set I got, the ribs were intact but the covering was wrinkled pretty bad. The plastic separated on a few of the strips when I pulled the little strips of masking tap off. Personally I think it was the factory that got the contract for the RV-4 job.
I will continue to buy GP/TF planes as long as the build quality of the arfs are good.

Anyway I got my G-23 installed and running. It weights 12.5 lbs, which is 2 lbs. I can tell from running it on the ground this will be a good combination. It was a real floater with the O.S. 91 Surpass in it. You could probably add more before this plane loses it's lovely flight characteristics.

I'm at the point of installing the cowl. Has veryone install per the manual or have you altered the way you mounted your cowl. Thanks for your input.

Got ahold of great planes over the last few days, after they gave the run around about how they've never heard of this problum before they agreed to send me a few rolls of monokote to recover the RV. should be here in a few days. But I bought an arf so I would'nt have to build this winter and it looks like I'm gonna have to do it anyway!

I guess I'll never buy a Great Planes ARF again, I am veary unsatified! I just hope this thing files good enough to make it all worth it!

Bipeguy03,
The responce you recieved from ** does not surprise me at all. They told me the same thing on the phone, even while I had a thread going on on here. I have boought two more planes to fill my hanger, and I never even wasted two seconds to check what new planes from ** have come out.
I will not be in the future either.
I do love to fly the RV though, even though the C******* is total trash.

I haven't flown mine yet this season but I remember from last season the Saito 91 seems to barely hold my RV4 in the air. The plane comes in at around 12 Lb (if I remember), and I think I'm using a 13-7 prop. Near full throttle just to hold cruising speed and altitude. Wondering if there's something wrong with the engine or it isn't tuned properly.. Engines aren't my thing yet, still learning.

Also I recall hearing that you can send a Saito somewhere and they'll check it out and tell you if something's wrong, etc.

Any help/suggestions/etc much appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

Steve,
The only problem I see is that your Saito .91 is far under propped (over revving with to small of prop). Put a APC 14-6 on it and the performance will really improve. The APC 14-6 is the bench mark prop recommended by Horizon Hobbies "The US importer and service center" for the est overall performance.
Motorman37
This is the general specs from Horizon with there basic prop recommendations of a APC 14-6 which by the way out performs all other Brand 14-6s. The APC 14-6 has been my favorite prop on .91's for years.

Specs
Type:4-stroke
Displacement:.91 cu in (15.0 cc)
Bore:1.11 in (28.20 mm)
Stroke:0.94 in (24.00 mm)

Engine (Only) Weight:19.6 oz
Crankshaft Threads:M7 x 1mm
Benchmark Prop:14 x 6 Zinger @ 9,100
Prop Range:12x8 - 15x6
RPM Range:2,000 - 11,000
Fuel:10% - 30% Synthetic
Mounting Dimensions:116 x 60 x 117 mm
Muffler Type:Cast
Cylinder Type:AAC
Carb Type:Barrel, 2 Needle Valve

MOTORMAN37,

I bought the new Wild Hare Extra 260 that is covered in Ultracote and the clear on the black is pealing back. Here is what Tom from WH told me to do in the WH thread.

"I think they got some bad black Ultracote, this is happening in a lot of areas where there is a little sliver of covering, the black adghesive is separating from the clear film. I do not have a solution other than to replace that section with some black from another source."

Zippi,
That also sounds like a line of BS, that they gave you about the Ultracote on your plane. I have been in this hobby for over 30 years, and Monokote simply does not due what is happening to the RV-4's, SkyBolt wings (Bottom), and Reactor model. GP has allready admitted to outsourced covering on the Bottom of the wings on the Skybolt, but continue to advertise it as Expertly covered in Top Flight Monokote. The examples of the black peeling on the RV-4 is very common. Allmost everyone is complaining about it that has one. Actually all of the colors on the RV including the white will do it. It is simply false advertising and that is it. GP has beat around the bush since it was exposed in OCT 07.

This may seem crazy but I can't get the prop nut to tighten down tight enough before the crankshaft turns. The crankshaft does not have a allen head at the end to hold the crankshaft still while tightening. Any help is greatly appreciated. What's the next best way to get the prop nut tight.
Thanks

I had to know so I went and held my G20 up to an RV-4 cowl and it looks like a good fit. You will have to do some cutting to get it in there. You will have to cut an opening on the bottom for the top of the engine, a hole for the carb and an opening for the muffler. It won't look bad, it's just the nature of having gas engines.
It is a little smaller than the G23 I have on my RV-4. I have a Bisson pitts on each of them, I know it cuts the performance a bit but the G23 is powerful enough to make up for it.
I like the B&B single pipe exhaust. It will help the little monster get the max RPMs that you can get out of it.
I bought my G20 from Horizon and then sent it to Ralph at RCIgnitions.

I whent ahead and flew the RV on sunday, I thought I might as well get some use out of it before I start recovering it. It sure is a blast to fly though! I have a super tigre .90 turning a 15x5 prop and it hauls the plane quite well, Its just a shame that this good flying bird is caught up in all of this monokote BS.

I think that GP should just realese the RV as an ARC!
