If you go to the 4 star build, on post 310 page 13. I have a couple of pictures of the canopy of my 4 star. I used window tint film on my Hangar 9 Pawnee, but the canopy on it slab sided. The RV-4 is a bubble. I tried the spray tint that Testors has, too much spit and mess. I use black enamel spray paint. You can not see thru it, but it stays black and I feel it looks nice.
take care,
Randy

I went with the Rit dye tint. I filled up a bin with 145F water and the whole package of powder black Rit dye and a tablespoon of vinegar.

Left it in there for about an hour and it came out just right

Anyone have a photo of the tinted canopies? Been considering doing this myself for the RV-4. I have seen some other models done with a light/sky/powder blue and they looked really good to me. Spray paint I assume.

I,ve seen a couple of canopies done with translucent RC car paint. Sprayed the inside only. They looked really good.

Hi Guys,
I have a real problem with my RV-4 that I don't know how to solve.

I am running the OS 91 4 stroke and of course, it is fully enclosed in the cowl.

I need to remove my cowl to repair a remote glow igniter wire ( contacted muffler and burned off insulation).

I removed the GP spinner adapter but I am unable to remove the prop nut that contact the prop washer and holds the prop on.

When I put a wrench to it, the prop shaft just rotates and cycles the piston up/down even though I am holding the prop and spinner back plate. They just slip in the motor shaft.

I have no way to hold the prop shaft even though I have 6-8mm of threads exposed forware of the nut.

There is not enough room between the spinner base plate and the cowl to try and hold the thrust washer (??) that the base plate of the spinner rests against and I am sure not going to put vice-grips on the threaded prop shaft.

I used the blue locktite (temp) locktite since I was having a problem with the nuts and spinner loosening up during start-up.

Help!

Any ideas or methods on how to break the nut free?

What did I do wrong?

Any suggestions helpful and apprectiated.

Ken

maybe you used too much loctite..? Hopefully you did not crossthread the screw?

All I can think of is you need a vise grip hold on the bit behind the spinner plate to hold it so it does not go round when you turn the other wrench. make sure to use a bit of leather so you don't sratch up that part with the vise grip or channel locks...

Post a picture

I can't grip the thrust washer behind the spinner plate because there is only about 3-4 mm clearance between the spinner plate and the cowl. Also, the thrust washer would just rotate on the shaft. Seems like I need to hold the shaft somehow.

Anyone - please help!

sounds like the cowl is getting in the way...you might have to hack it apart to remove the nut then buy a replacement cowl.

Maybe?

If the thrust washer turns on the shaft, either the key locking the shaft to the thrust washer is sheared or missing. One way now to lock the crankshaft is to fill the combustion chamber with oil to htdro-lock the engine. Carefully heat the nuts, shaft and thrust washer with your heat gun as hot as you can get it . Then VERY CAREFULLY try to back off the nut. The reason you may be having problems with the nuts backing off is the lack of the key locking the shaft to the thrust washer. NEVER use threadlock on the propnut when you have a jam nut arrangement like on your engine. It is totally not necessary and can cause problems such as yours.

Ken, how about using a razor saw to cut off the two prop halfs and then remove the cowel. That way you've saved the cowel and now have some working room around the engine.

I would try putting two nuts on the exposed shaft threads and jamming them together, out near the end. Then you can grip these with a visegrip or wrenchwithout ruining your threads, and try getting the stuck nut off with a wrench.

Good luck

I had the honor of flying my son's (RCU screen name C.O.) RV-4 yesterday and they fly absolutely great. There are probably a lot of flight reports within this thread but i just wanted to let you fella's know that if you are thinking of one of these,,, go for it. I have been in RC for more years than i care to think about so it takes something like this plane to get my attention and that it did. He has an O.S. .61 in it and I was a bit worried about having enough power but it flew his just fine. From take off (in thick grass a bit on the high side) to landing, it is a pleasure. My son and Great Planes have truly made this a great plane.

Guys,
Thanks for all the help on getting my prop locknut off.
I'll try the 2 nuts jammed together on the end of the shaft to hold it and if that does not work I'll use the idea to just cut the prop off. Cheap fix for $7-8 and saves my cowl.

Again, Thanks to all.. People like you make RC flying the great Hobby it is!

I do not want to start another rant and rave about what type or size engine to put in this plane. I have a CRRC 26ei engine that runs grate and it is going in this plane. Has anyone fiberglassed the engine mount to add strength? If so could you please post pictures of what it looked like after you finished and before you mounted the engine. This is my first gasser and I know you do need to beaf things up a little. It probably needs it anyway. Any help would be appreciated.
