The cowling is about 8 inches wide at the cheeks, 7 1/2 high at the back, 7 1/8 to 7 1/4 wide at the rear and about 9 1/4 inches from the rear firewall to the spinner backplate. True to its full-scale RV-4 heritage, it is a pain to install a bigger engine without some cowl mods.

Thanks for the measurments kaosfan. thanks for your input motorman37. now I knew that the muffler would stick out some. but it looks like the 20 would be too wide. oh well back to the thinking board...somebody on this thread was thinking of the bme .90 gas. if that person is still reading, any more info you might be able to give me? thanks guys.

I think the BME (Super Tiger conversion) .90 would be the only one that might fit weight and power wise. It requires half the ignition battery of the G20 and returns a whole day of flying with it. The engine box design simply in my mind is not designed strong enough for a gas engine larger than that. The only problem is the location of the carb on the BME. The carb is about 3/8" behind the drive washer. I do not think it has a chance in hell of ever clearing the nose ring of the cowl. I would not want to hang anything over a .91 on the firewall.

Kaosfan, What are you powering yours with, it looks like a OS 1.08 or .91 FSR? I have one of my Magnum .91XLS's (OS .91FX clone) with Bisson pitts mocked up in mine currrently, but it looks like the Bisson pitts will not fit by 1/8", the corner might hit the cowling. I was hopeing I did not have to cut the cowl for muffler clearance just exhaust pipe and hot air exit. I might end putting one of my Magnum .91RFS's in it instead. I was hopeing to be able to get the two stroke to fit. What kind of muffler are you running, and do you have any pic's of your install. Motorman

I was talking about the BME .90 gas, but my plane has not arrived yet so I have no new info. Should be here in the next day or 2. Will update when I have a chance to look it over.

A Bisson pitts muffler for a OS .91 FX is going to be really close, slimline is even worse yet, since it protrudes past the flange. I have attached a couple poor quality pictures (batteries are low in camera) showing how close the muffler will be. I made an exact size replica of the mounting end of the Bisson for a OS .91FX. It looks as if there is not even 1/8 of clearance. I have a Bisson laying on the Bench for a ST .90 which actually has a bigger nounting boss yet. The carb barrel of the .91 will be less than 1/4 from the inside of the cowl. I guess they really did make it for a Fourstroke or electric. I mounted a Maggie .91RFS up and it fits perfect. I think I might mock up the rest of the muffler except for the pipes to see if the rest will fit. I do not want to cut any cowl away except for the exits. I am in no big hurry so Might waite and see what everyone else is going to do.

Good eye Motorman. Yes, it is a O.S. 1.08 two-stroke. I bolted it to the mount but have the same issues with trying to fit a muffler. I have not bought one yet. Thanks for the info on the muffler situation. The carb comes right up to the cowl in the front. In some ways I would rather have the four-stroke sound but I was hoping to not buy another engine at this time. I am concerned about the four-stroke needing a extension for the muffler too. As it is now I have to buy a full planeload of servos since none of mine currently have enough torque.
Oh well, I just had to have this airplane. It's only money........right?

Kaos, Your best best is to invert it, Bisson makes a nice inverted muffler. As far as the extension goes, I have that figures out. I took Maggies muffler to work and tiged a small bead around the stinger. I then had my buddy chuck it up in the lathe real quick. WAHLA The extension will not fall off now. I cannot believe that all mufflers are not made this way. I also did one mod, I sanded the clear off, and made a plate out of 1/16 aircraft ply, and overlapped the dovetail section in the front. I did not even add 1 oz, but my landing gear will be a hell of alot stronger. The landing gear area in the front, was the only thing I had concerns about. Here are a couple pic's of todays progress. I have Two Magnums mounted, 1 .91XLS w/ Pitts, and 1 .91 RFS's. Luckily I had an extra GP mount. I am not going to make up my mind untill I can bench run them both.

Dick, I know you said the .91 flew it good, but was it under powered at all. I would like to run a 14-6, since the 15-6 is lugging it town just a tad to much. I do not want a marginaly powered plane. What do you think of a Magnum .91 XLS versus Magnum .91RFS. They run nearly identical to there OS ancestry.
