Whoa, when was this thing released?!? [X(]

My brother and I were looking into building a Harmon Rocket but,
he is being bit by the $heli$ bug right now so I've been
looking for a project I can do on my own.

This is perfect! Large size, perfect for a third airplane and can be assembled
w/flaps!!! This might be my intro into 4-strokes as I was also looking into
the R/C Guys C-150 Aerobat. I had just decided to go to Great Planes
sight just to see if there was anything new or I might have missed
and KAPOW!!! There she was! Nicely striped, not overstated. Just
a nice scale subject. All-wood, should fly nice.



GP RV-4



Anybody know anything about this model? Cost? Would a .91 4-stroke be sufficient for
an 11 lb. model?

I still have the RV-4 from GP....that is one cool fly'n plane! Hope the big one flys just as good

Thats going to be my next model. I am thinking about a Saito 100 or 125. What does everyone think. My only problem with the 125 is the price. If it needs the power of the 125 over the 100 I think I would just buy a YS110 and have plenty. I am also going to pull all the trim off and change it to a newer trim scheme from a full scale plane. The kit flies great! I used a OS. 46AX. It looks like the same plane but with some mods. For example, the wing is in two pieces for transport. The kits wing in one piece.

This is not an aerobatic bird. She does good maneuvers but the design is limited. The bigger engines might be a waste.

Was looking at the RVotw...that is some serious glass on the panel of that RV-7![8D]
To have the means to build something like that...I would just sit in it and make airplane
noises all day long!!![:D]

Thanks for your insight on the aerobatics capabilities. Unfortunately, that might not
be the plane I'm looking for then. But then I should have known that it's not going
to be an Extra or anything.That is just such a gorgeous model!
Man, I'm really stuck between having a beautiful,
larger scale airplane and something that's going to
perform great aerobatics.

I am just looking for scale performace and I plan to fly it that way no blenders or hard snap rolls for this one. I got to do a few rolls in a full scale RV-6 and it went around pretty fast.

I have to respectively disagree that this is not an aerobatic bird. When I was taking my flying lessons I went flying with the guy that "set the hook" so to speak in his RV4. He had two of them. I mentioned one day that I had seen the Blue Angels fly and it was neat to see some of the stuff they do. He invited me to go flying with him. He lined up on the runway and poured the coals to it. We hit top speed and he pulled it vertical. Then we went into a hammerhead and a bunch of other "aerobatic" maneuvers. It was a blast and the plane really flew the patterns well. This is a private pilot with over 16,000 logged hours and a self-taught aerobat.

Just wanting to point out that the "real thing" is an aerobat.

It's nice to see more experimental and general aviation airplanes modeled, especially as ARF's. I applaud the effort that Great Planes, Top Flite, and other companies have put forth in this endeavor.

But, I just wish GP had done a better job with the color scheme on this RV-4. That scheme is about as boring as you can get for such a spunky airplane; it deserved something better. It would also be nice if the horizontal tail was airfoiled and the canopy blended into the fuselage more like the real RV-4. When you compare the dollor value for this ARF versus others, like the GP Super Skybolt or Cosmic Wind Minnow for example, it's not a great deal.

I guess my complaints don't matter in the end since I went ahead and placed an order with my LHS for one. I can't help myself since I'm a sucker for experimental (homebuilt) airplanes, but my RV-4 will be bashed into something more pleasing to the eye.

Thanks for your account on the real plane...sounded like lots of fun.

I wonder if this model's airfoil will be based on the real one. I really find it
disappointing that some model manufacturers do not list airfoil types as this
is a big decision factor in purchasing any airplane. For example,
I do not want another "semi" or "quassi" symmetrical airplane and you
really can't tell form pictures what you are getting. I wish more of these
manufacturers would take pics of the wing from the tip, giving us a good
profile of the airfoil.

Anyway, it seems the full scale RV has quite an unusual airfoil type,
with a symmetrical shape almost to the back of the wing on the bottom
where it starts to actually bend up, then downwards...pretty nifty!

From Van's website:

"Two-seat RVs (the RV-9/9A excepted) use the proven NACA 230 series airfoil. These are turbulent flow airfoils with very low pitching moments. They do not require perfectly smooth surfaces to achieve good performance, so they remain almost unaffected by bugs and rain. The low pitching moment allows cruise trim drag to be kept to a minimum. The RV-9/9A uses a new Roncz airfoil design with a slightly longer wing span, shorter chord and slotted flaps for better low speed performance. The RV-10 uses a similar wing, but with a slightly different airfoil."

The GP .40 size RV-4 kit uses the Selig 8036 airfoil.

I think I was getting the curvature of the tip and not the wing on
the center pic that you posted up there. An s8036 on this plane
has just made it appealing again, pretty symmetrical...hopefully that's what they stuck
with on this ARF.

I really like the .40 size kit, will definitely look into this one for a
fun, time consuming build project. ARF's go together
way too fast nowadays, this would be a really satisfying build with minimal $$$.

Good Job on the vid. [8D]

Looks like it flys real nice. I'm sure that it's got to
be able to do a little bettter in the aerobatics dept.
than the vid shows. Some more power would make this
plane come alive I bet.

Here's the airfoil (Selig8036) from the kit. Not really ideal for inverted flight
but, good for overall sport flying.

How much fun are you in for?!? That kicks so much a$$![8D]

Is that a quick-build kit (the full scale) or is that
how they come? Looks pretty complete.
That's an RV-7 right? What are you powering it with, O- 280,320?

My brother and I have been looking at used Cessna 177 Cardinals
but, there is just so much available now in the new homebuilt / LSA market
for waaay less initial maintenance costs as far as AD currency, annual and TBO.
We hope to have an aircraft within the next 7 years or so.

a site that you post to showing the progress of the full-scale build.

Man, those two should keep you just a little busy for a while, huh?

BTW, back on topic, could you post or PM a good pic on the airfoil of the "little" guy?
I'm curious to see what they used.

Sorry, only one RV is mine and you can probably guess which one.

But, it is the very first kit out of Great Planes until March.

(and it is a Quick Build RV-7, couldn't find a photo of a full scale RV-4 kit)
