Hi all,
Bought the new 540T a couple weeks ago and am accumulating all the other "stuff" slowly and tinkering on the airplane in the meantime. Yep, I know that many of you think there's next to nothing that needs doing but I am accustomed to stuff I build myself and have (still) not seen an ARF I didn't think needed some slight adjustments/changes to make me happy before I'll fly it! I'll not claim that I'm improving it (well in most cases at least) just making it the way I want it to be. The only things I would categorize as fixes that I've done so far is adding a bit of glue here and there where things are just plain (or is that plane? ) loose and trimming the wing tube down to size so the wings actually mount flush with the sides of the body. I'll update you all as I get a bit further on and post a few pics as the cosmetics change a bit. That's another thing about ARFs. I can't stand to have anything that looks just like everyone else's! So a bit of covering modifications will happen before it flies and maybe a bit else... I've holding myself back from just stripping it and recovering entirely (my usual ARF reaction). If I could have got an all white that would have been my first choice. Alas it wasn't available that way. I'm flying a bit of IMAC and needed a good plane for that and the rep for this plane is so good that I'm giving it a shot. My theory is, at least if I wreck it I don't have the time in it I'd have in a kit and I can replace it far quicker with one that should fly very similarly. No insult to Tom/WH intended. I know many of the changes I'll make are purely my preference and not necessarily to correct any failings of the plane. I expect it will fly very well and looking forward to getting it in the air. With my usual speed of build that will be about springtime!!!

Jack

Here's the maiden vid. I'm not a good pilot, so don't be too harsh I am just at the point of nearly being able to torque roll, and do rolling harriers, but not with this plane until I feel more comfortable, which I am sure won't be long!

<edit>... second flight vid attached.

Beautiful job!! I really love the way that engine sits in there. Looks like it was made just for that plane.

Hi Charrua, I think the engine and ignition weighs in at 4.04 lbs. It says 4.51 on the 3W site, but I am sure this is wrong. Obviously, the headers and cans add a little, but saying that, the headers are extremely thin walled and light, and the cans are very small and light too. I have no idea of the weight of the plane, but will weigh it in the next day or so since you have asked the question. I had all the same radio/engine in the 50cc Extra, with two 2400 Li-ion packs in the tail for ignition, and radio. In the Extra, it needed about 50 grams of lead attached to the underside of the rudder, but with the same placement in the V2 Edge, the CG is perhaps half an inch too far back? The plane climbs both ways up, and you have to push down to get it to land. So, I will move the ignition battery up front and see how things are then.

I was in a kind of strange situation with this plane and engine... My feelings for the engine are nearly bad enough to make my Wife have me committed to an institution (not a flying club!). Part of me was set on another plane of another brand, but I was adamant that there was no way I would switch away from this engine for a single cylinder/single can combo that would have been necessary for that plane. Sure, I could have made up a new 2 into 1 header, but I figured the easier option was to give the Edge a shot... Boy, am I glad I did! I can't imagine being more impressed with a plane than this! I really like high-alpha (harrier) flight, and love getting really low, and really tight maneuvers, and given two brief flights, I am sure I will make huge progress with this plane. On the Extra, if you applied to much elevator, she would drop a wing. With the Edge, you can pull as hard as you like, and it still doesn't bite. But, do some degree, most planes have a point where they will drop a wing when you do this, but it seems the Edge just won't! With the Extra, I learn't to work around this, but sometimes, if you got into trouble and needed to pull hard, things could become very un-nerving.

I hope to get some more video in the next few days once I feel more at ease having not flown for so long prior to yesterdays maiden. Will post it, and pics.

Does anyone know where in the UK I can get the Graphtech landing gear, or can I buy it from your side of the water?

Best,

Mike.

Oh, and Lou... I believe it was! I could have got away with modding the left plug cap, but it would have still touched the cowl. So, I cut a small slot for it to avoid contact.

What a shame. I really love this cowl. It tucked my 50 away really nice. Thought you couldn't get any better but I think ya got me beat. Love your setup. I'll be interested to see what your AUW is.

Mike_T5,

Looks like you have a great combination! You did a fantastic job flying......especially the first two flights (I still cheer successful flights and landings at that point in the life of a plane!).

Looks like you hae plenty of power to weight - looks kinda like a big foamy up their....once again, great job!

Looks like that engine and the plane are a perfect match!

Mike T5,

Nice video. Yours looks more stable than mine at mid-alpha stuff. Mine has mild wing rock until you get it really deep into the AOA. How can I get rid of that mild wing rock? I have the elevator Arms/Throws dialed in as close as a matchbox will allow. What else can I do?

Yours also looks more stable in the hover. Where is your CG?

Hey Guys,

It looks like there has not been much activity here. I just recieved my WH Edge 540 V2 a few weeks ago and I have been doing a lot of reading on various radio installations, etc. Thanks to all of you and the great information so far.

First of all this is my first gasser and large scale bird. So bear with me a little...... I have been building for a long time sense I was a kid with my dad, but this is also my first venture into the ARF world. I never thought I would be here but yes I have been converted.........LOL...........

This plane is just beautiful......Thanks Tom for a great looking aircraft!!!...

I purchased the aircraft with the hardware package, but I am up to any other suggestions that you found work out a bit better on the installation. I am looking at the following radio and engine setup.

JR 8103
JR 950S PCM RX (Will this be a good RX being single conversion?) Have there been any problems with them?
(4) Hitech 5645 servos ELE and ALIE (What size SWB arms should I be looking at 1" or 1.25"? Seems to be some differences on that.)
(1) Hitech 5945 servo RUDD (Not sure if this enough...anyone wish to comment?) Just a basic Sport Flyer and areobatics,,,No 3D yet. I'm suer I'll be getting to that later though.
(1) Hitech 5625 servo THR
Manual Choke
42% optic engine kill SW
(1) A123 batt pack 6.6V (no regulator reg, they say) for RX and Servos
(1) 1700Mah 4.8V pack for Engine EI
(1) Smartfly HD SW 1-18AWG in, 2-22AWG out to RX
(1) Fromeco Failsafe SW for EI
DL 50 CC with stock muffler
DAVE BROWN Spinner
Bunny 22X8 Prop. (I'll be trying other down the road...Vess 22A or 23B

Thats all I can think of for now. I know I will be looking at the CF stuff later to lighten the aircraft, just want to see how everthing goes together first and make mods down the line.

Thanks for any help you give me.

I'll be posting the progress as I go with Pics.

Mike
