I came to the conclusion that the tails on these do not ride as high as a Waco tail. They ride on the high side of neutral, typically, much like the photo you were kind enough to show us, Tom. I was going to describe it as ''lower than the main wing, but not a lot lower''.

Yours seems to be riding nicely. Some of the others I've been watching (and by the way, most of these I've looked carefully at have been in videos) are riding quite low in the tail. It's a testament to the excellent flight capabilities of this plane, but still it doesn't look quite right and I'm sure that although it might not be bad enough to make itself known, it has to cause some sort of drag and other related issues.

With the frontal surfaces these Golden Agers present, it seems to me that streamlining anything you can would be important. Gives a whole new meaning to the words; ''Drag and Drop'' !!!

I got a call from Pac Aero today, I found out the tires are 3-3/4 inches. I was going to get some 4.5-inch wheels for her but I guess I'm going to wait until I have the gear and the wheelpants in my hands first. That's a fairly big difference, although I think it may just work.

Hopefully it should be here pretty soon.

Jimbo

Finally got in the shop today. These are Sullivan Sky Kight wheels, 4".

Wow, if those are 4 inch wheels this is a pretty big plane. They actually look a bit small for it.

Oh, it's quite a chubby dude, not small at all except for short wings.

I thought you were talking about Skylights, anyway. I have a question; do you think that I might be able to get a pair of 4.5'' wheels on there? And is there any more width in the whee lpants than the 4'' skylights use right now? I'm looking at a slightly fatter pair with the 4.5 inch wheels.

Thanks for the help, MobyAl I'm getting all excited about this build, which is cool, because I haven't been this excited about a build in a long, long, time!

I'm also going to put smoke into this one, and I haven't researched smoke systems in better than 10 years, so any help that can be sent my way from any of you guys about smoke systems would be much appreciated.

Jimbo

I think the 4.5" inch wheels will fit. Let me check how much side-to-side clearance there is in the pant when I get back in the shop tomorrow. I'll let you know.

Well, it is a quarter scale airplane. Same basic fuse dimensions as the Ikon N'West Monocoupe, but of course th wingspan is very much different. Pics show that one w/ 4" wheels.

Jee whiz Myobal, you sure have a collection. I see you have the Pawnee and the H9 biplane. How do you rate the Monocoupe against the Pawnee.

The bipe looks like it flies well but doesnt handle too well on the ground.

Thanks, "Lots"
The pawnee and the Clipped Wing 'Coupe aren't really comparable. The 'Coupe is much heavier, larger except for wingspan and faster. The H9 Pawnee, 80" wing, is about the best ARF I've ever assembled. The only mod I'd recommend would be to swap out the supplied tailwheel. It's very light and simple. Only "complication" it has is flaps. I have mine set up as 2-position. It flies just great, as it should because it's really just an upside-down Super Cub, though it handles MUCH better on the ground. Mine's powered w/ an EVO 52 and takes off at 1/2 throttle and just putts around nice and slow. About my favorite to fly.
The Pacific Clipped Wing 'Coupe goes together about as good as one can. It's a real easy assembly and the flaperons are pretty easy to set up.
The H9 Fokker DVII underneath the Pawnee on the wall rack also flies great w/ an EVO 61. It too went together very well. You're right about ground handling. Or lack of it. You can get around w/ lots of rudder and up elevator w/ strong blasts on the throttle, and scale (read "noseover!) landings aren't uncommon.
The red and white taildragger hanging from the ceiling isn't a Cessna. It's the RC Guys Super Decathelon.
Thanks for looking at the assortment. Here's the rest....

Myobal thats a great collection of planes. It amazes me the difference between one plane and the next when it comes to building them and then flying them. I notice you even have the parkzone electric corsair, a nice simple little plane that flies quite well. Ive had one and flew it a fair bit.

I have the Pawnee too and did my maiden with it last week. I tried using the flaps to land and I have them pretty much fully extended. I did two sloppy landings with flaps down and did a bit of damage I am repairing now.  Seemed to stall at the last moment so I am going to reduce the flaps to about 50% of travel. can you tell me what is 2 - position ?

So with such a variety of planes, can you say which you like the most and why. One in particular must really put a smile on your face.

In one of your pics you can see how short the Monocoupes wings are, thats amazing. Does it really fly as well as the they say, even with such short wings ?

Jimbo, check yer mail.

Yeah, mine flys with an extremly low tail, and I can't figure it out! [>:] It's like the horizontal stabilizer doesn't have enough area to hold it's rear end up. It balances exactly where the manual sez it should, but it looks like hell while flying !

What can I do to make it look decent in flight ? ? ?

Woohoo - USPS finally managed to get my ''carb insulator'' to me - back to assembly tomorrow night. Off to watch the Kings play Philadelphia Flyers tonight.
[/quote]

Minor setback tonight

I ordered the factory carb insulator - turns out my G26 had the "new and inproved" carb insulator - the one that rotates the carb about 90 degrees counterclockwise (facing the carb)..SO...tomorrow I'll order the correct one. Did get the vertical stab on (if you haven't built your plane yet DO NOT put in that last hinge point until this step!)

Tomorrow night I'll do the pull pull, control linkage for the elevator servos - time permitting maybe temp mount the carb with the "broken" insulator and get the cowl cut.

Plus (to add insult to injury) picked a Severly Sucky Cigar tonight (wonder if I can get the wienerdog to smoke the rest of these Aspiras?

Actually, even moving the cg forward will not affect the fuselage angle while the plane is flying. It's all to do with the wing/fuselage rig. you see, at whaterver weight you are flying, and airspeed allowed by the engine/prop combination, the wing will assume an angle to the air to provide just the right amount of lift. The tailplane helps by keeping the wing at that angle. The fuselage is only along for the ride. If you want the fuselage to 'fly' at some attitude, then you have to arrange the wing and tail angles in relation to this attitude to allow it to do so. Prop the fuselage up on the bench at the attitude you would like to see, set the main wing at, say 1 deg AOA? Set the tailplane a zero AOA, both referencing the table top, of course. balance around 25% MAC and then go fly again. It will mean you will have to do some surgery, but that is the only way you can change the cruise attitude of the fuselage.
Evan, WB #12.

More great information, thanks Evan. I'm going to try what Jimbo recommends first, and move the CG up a bit, and if that don't make a difference, I'll try messing with the decalage. With this plane however, the surgery may need to be major.

Well I just performed a quick check, and I may have been making a big mistake. I had a piece of tape on the underside of the wing, marking my balance point, according to the manual. Taking the manual for granted may have been my mistake. The tape mark showed balance at 4.5" from the L.E. Normally I start all my planes at 25%, but 25% on the Coupe equals about 3.7" from the L.E. And so, it looks as if I am over 30% back from the leading edge; or about .75" to the rear of 25%.

Looks like I'll be moving my battery pack forward about 3/4 of an inch.

Stay tuned.

I'm looking for a plane to put my Syssa 30CC gasser into.  That 30CC weighs the same as a Zenoah G20 E.I. !!  The more I looked at this plane, the more I knew it was just right for that engine.

My thoughts exactlythe Syssa SAP-180 should be a perfect match. I received my PA Monocoupe a couple weeks ago, but it will be some time before I'll be able to work on it. I'm really impressed with the quality so far and anxious to get started. I'm looking forward to your build and the flight reports with this engine combo. Living in southern Texas, I'm sure you'll be flying the thing before I even get started on mine!
