Paul the standoffs are 3/8" aircraft ply cut out with a 1 1/2" hole cutter,I didn't use the Saito standoffs but one could use em along with 1/2" hardwood standoffs or whatever. Then I painted the firewall and standoffs with silver dope.
It appears the Monocoupe had a 7 cylinder radial back then would that be correct?
Time to install the McDaniel R/C glo drivers, fuel tank, etc.

Looks really good, Steve. I'll probably go with 1/4" ply and the Saito aluminum washers. I believe 7 cylinders is correct on this particular model. My Ikon N'west Monocoupe 90A cowl has rocker arm "blisters" for only five cylinders.

I am sold now on this plane after seeing the 170. I was going to build a P6E Hawk but this on will be priority. What prop will you run with the Saito?

I did a bench run with my engine and was getting 6700 rpm with an old Dynathrust 18x8 glass prop.I built a test stand using a wood saw horse and it wanted to pull that thing right over.My engine was previously mounted in a 20lb T/F Stinson reliant and it flew well turning a 18x8 wood prop @ 7000 rpm.I also got the idle to come down around 900 rpm,it just sounds awesome at that rpm.
Just about have my tank in,I went with a 16 oz sq tank that I can slide behind the panel. Also I raised it so its level with the carb.I also did some fuel proofing in this area.I have lots of silver dope(I know some people that say dopes not fuel proof but it works for me) so I painted most of the interior with it.I also did some painting around the landing gear bottom fairing and landing gear mounting plate.A lot of open seams where the covering is trimmed were also painted.

Hellcat716,

I'm interested in how the Brillelli 36cc performs in this plane. Keep us posted on the flight report.

The Brillelli 36 cc engine is perfect for this plane. I fly it about 1/3 to 1/2 throttle. Plenty of power for any type on manuver you want to do. No additional weight needed for balance. Runs great and very easy to start. I would highly recommend this engine.

I am on my second Coupe first one found a home(everything has a price--someone met it!) which was powered with a G26. My second one is going together with the same set-up. With the servos in the tail , it balances primo! Enough power to fly about any way I want, and cheap on gas. Best ARF that I have had the pleasure to put together--every thing fits, and all the hardware is usable! Oh, I use the magneto G26, not the ignition. With the new 2.4 Spectrum system, I havn't had a hint of a glitch1

I maidened mine last week to the cheers of my fellow club pilots. Stand-by for some serious attention at the field. There is nothing of consequence to note with the first few flights. Mine has a tendency to climb on power, but it may be a little tail heavy. She was balanced in the center of the CG range (4 3/8”). I am going to move the CG forward to the recommended forward balance point. The low rate throws are not very responsive, so I wouldn’t bother with them. She handles fine in the recommended high rate settings. I programmed flaperons, but you really don’t need them with a moderate wind on the nose. With a 5-8 mph wind she slows nicely for landing. She has a tendency to balloon when the wing gets into ground effect so don’t flare too soon. Mine runs on an OS160, with Bisson Pitts muffler, Perry VP30 pump, swinging and MA classic 18X8. All up weight is 13.3 lbs.

What exhaust are you running with the Brillelli 36? Is it scale or a typical dump muffler? Is there a scale version available. Also what mount, standoff, and prop are you running?

This is my first scale racer plane as I make a move from Giant Aerobatics and the servo choice is driving me nuts. It used to be the biggest and baddest and that was easy. Below is what I think I need for this plane???

Rudder - HITEC HS625MG

Ailerons/Elevators - HITEC HS425BB

Throttle - HS325BB

NOBS 6.0v Battery Setup

I originally was going to run a Saito 170r but the mess I hate. I have had a Brillelli before and it was flawless. The 36 will be my choice.

PTS,

I've had 4 of the Brillelli engines up to the 40cc. Very nice running engines and good customer service. The 36cc engine has the carb in a little downward attitude with it being inverted and it looks like he used an aluminum velocity stack on the carb and cut it off flush to the cowl. Neat looking setup. Does anyone have any pics of the plane next to someone to get a visual look at the size of the plane? With only a 69" wing span it seems small.

It is the inverted muffler that comes stock with the engine. I am using a aluminum mount that I had pre drilled and purchased from Brillelli.

I ordered the Brillelli 36, muffler, and mount today from Scott. He recommended the Xoar 18x8 prop. I am really anxious about this plane.

A few more pics of the Saito 170 installation and a simple panel. The layout of the 170 calls for a 9 cylinder setup with dummy cylinders. So I had to use a different dummy engine.Looks ok though I think. You can see the onboard glow indicator light on the panel.

Steve: A little tip for you. I noticed that your landing gear fairings don't match the fuselage real well. If you heat the fiberglass (carefully) with a heat gun, you can re-form it a little bit with your finger to fit more snugly. It won't sag when it gets hot like plastic would.

The engine installation look really nice. Let us all know how it flies.

Jim
