Thanks for hanging in there with me. The gun is on the high setting. I'll double check, but my gun is a Weller and I think the light comes on whether there is a complete circuit or not? There is heat at the contact site, but no sign of contact. Ive held it from momentary to more than that. Maybe this just isn't what it's supposed to be

Sorry Bob... Maybe it's a wild goose chase. Or maybe it's the tab. Try applying a thin coat of solder to the tab before attempting the "Spot Weld".
Have you tried emailing the originator of this idea? It's from an old document, but just maybe his email address is still valid.

I asked about the light, because my Dad used to have a gun like that (also Weller I think), and when the screws which hold the tip in place came loose and made bad contact, the light would flicker. When the light didn't go on, there was no heat. Also, the bulb's intensity would vary with the power setting (high/low). Since these guns operate their output at low voltage (1.5V), I assume the bulb is in series with the tip.
