Anyone else with a Brushless set up that was a success? Good luck Mr. Falcon, and keep us posted with performance and cost comparisons.

I have a Ammo 12-30-3850 Brushless In-Runner Motor and ElectriFly BL-8 Brushless ESC for my tail motor setup directed by the 240 gyro. So far I am very happy with it. On my shelf a Ammo 24-33-3500 Brushless In-Runner Motor waiting for a B.O. Silver Series 25A Brushless ESC 5V/2A BEC to replace the stock motor.
I'm not the first person to run or have the potential to use this setup and they are happy with it. Tail replacement - remove old motor heat pinion red hot and it will slide right off do the same to install on the new motor and fish a third small gauge wire through the tail boom and install the esc where ever it fits mine is under the tail boom block. The main motor will require a little more effort, the stock motor has a smaller pinion shaft then the new, A 2.3mm to 3mm shaft difference so something like a #33 or 32 drill bit with maybe some reaming, heating and pressing while supporting the recessed side of the shaft, I think I'll place the esc also under the tail boom block, this eliminates the 3 in 1. I have yet to do this mod and will post more info if I run into something interesting when I receive my esc.

My ESC should be here today 3/16. I switched from a SS25 to a SS35 big time overkill, because this was available now and the 25 won't be available till almost May. Early this week the OE motor released it's magic smoke and I need something in a hurry. Since I already had the motor I did have success on drilling out the pinion.
Started out with some standard size bits till I got to the metric stage, ended up with the # 32 bit and pressed the pinion with a small nut for the butt end and pair of soft padded quik-grips with some moderate hand muscle.

Today was the first day I could get outside besides bashing the heli up inside and try this new setup out.

The main motor has more than enough power for this model. I was able to get some decent hovers @ half stick or a little better - I am no wares near doing any wild stuff yet, but I am happy with the setup.

Since I still learning to fly this heli I have changed out the stock TR already gone through 2 of them, to a 3X2 GWS Prop. And with the BL motor and Gy240 it holds it own. I did manage to rip off the vertical fin and bash up the tail boom, but thats to be expected for a entry level chopper and lack of skill. With a light at the end of the tunnel with a MX450XS my inspiration, which is a slow build in progress, doing alot of reaserch, mods and TRex parts swaps to make it the best as possible.

All in all I think I spent over an hour with 2 910s and 2 1500s stick packs. Don't have an actual flight time, just alot of spoolups, dialing in, and a minute or two hovers.

I know this is an old post, but I was thinking about this exact set up.(Ammo 12x30 tail motor, and Ammo 24x33mm main, only problem is finding a 24mm heatsink) Looking to go brushless and I'm finding its difficult to get a motor with a shaft that'll fit a pinion. The Tonic-X motor with their fan cooling have shaft sizes of 3.17mm and you cant't find pinions to fit. The 2015 size motors are only 20mm in diameter and are a little small. They get hot also. Venom has a motor with a gear already attached, but I fear its not large enough.

Anyone have suggestions for Brushless motors AND pinions that fit that will give descent results.

28-30 mm motors are almost too big and if they are outrunners will push the battery out to where the canopy might not fit. Argh...

I just installed the Esky EK5-0080 motor and esc combo in my axe and I'm quite pleased.

It's a EK5-0004 3100kv motor and a EK1-0350 25A esc.

I'm using a 13 tooth pinion and it seems to be about the same rpm as stock, but with more power and longer run times.

I used a ty-wrap between the frames so the battery won't hit the motor and I'm using a t-rex canopy so I don't know if it will clear the stock canopy.

Ok, I found some pinions that will make finding a motor much easier. They're at:

http://www.allerc.com/product_info.php?cPath=68&products_id=1487

The larger 3.17mm shaft pinions start at 16 teeth and go up in size, but its hard to find any this large size.

Why you can't find a motor, pinion, esc, locktite 609 all at one place to save on shipping is beyond me.

mikezell: What all did you have to buy for the BL upgrade? Can the stock motor pinion be used?

I have done the GY240 and esc upgrade for the tail already. I just smoked the 3-in-1 over the weekend and am ready to install a BL main motor now. I have also installed the Bell-Hiller upgrade. I am really impressed with the upgrades and am able to control the machine very well.

pilotlight: I have seen on ebay someone has an HDX BL motor like what you are looking at, with a 2.3mm shaft along with the Hobbywing 18A esc. Would that work also?

I used the Esky EK5-0004 3100kv motor and a EK1-0350 25A esc and a 13 tooth 2.3 mm pinion I bought from heli direct.

I'm still using my 3 in 1 and brushed tail motor so, I used a Splitter for the connection to the receiver and removed the positive lead from the new esc connector so it would not be powering the receiver.

You will need to enlarge the slots for the motor screws and since it is an outrunner you need to keep the battery from hitting it.

I have not measured my head speed yet but it seems to be about stock. Pinions are available up to 16 tooth.

So the ESKY esc can power the receiver then, correct.
