When building a crawler you want your tires to be soft enough to grip the rocks, but still support the weight of the truck. There are several ways to modify the foams to do this… cut the foam in half, pie cut the foams, or do a star pattern as I am going to show. For me, this method yields the best results.

The first step is to use a marker and divide the foam in to 4 even sections.

Then 8...

Then 16.…

And finally 32...

Then mark a circle about ¼ to ½ up the side of the foam.

Then with a sharp pair of scissors, cut from the outside edge of 1 line to the inner diameter (you drew) on the next line over. Then from the next line back down to a point with the previous cut.
It should look like this…

Do this all the way around and it will look like this…

And you will have this left over.

This takes a bit of time, but will give you the extra bite on the rocks you need.

Awesome how-to! This is great info considering a crawler is up in line for one of my next 2 RC builds.

first off thanks for the write-up! It was a big help today.

Second, I did this to my moab 2.2s and use an xacto knife to all doing the cuts to moabs. I also got a tear in the foam and when I was putting it back in the tire it ripped in half so I stuffed some paper towel in the crack and hopefully it will solve the issue.

Here is what I used for foams. Team Trinity "Bomb Three" inserts. You also need Multi stage tire glue so the triple stage foams stay together. Careful as to what glue you use or the foams won't flex. What I like about this setup is that the tire flexes more and you get a solid tire patch to what ever surface you run them on. The foams are wide enough for sidewall strength too. Best way to describe it is an inner run flat system. You can see the difference in the size in the pictures.

You mean to mark the lines? How about a white or silver paint marker?
