Hey , can u guys tell me how i can start and run my 3.3 using only methanol and castor oil. Cant seem to get an ignition on the truck. Nitro fuel is not available here in my country and i'm stuck with using only a methanol/cator mix. How can i start the truck?I've tried different plugs but it just wont start! Any ideas?

I can tell you that the car will not run on 0 nitro. It has to have 20% at least. Dennis

So long as the methanol is good then you shouldn't have any problem getting it running. My son uses 80/20 methanol/castor in his Mach 28 and it starts and runs fine. It's best to use a hot plug with zero nitro unless you raise the compression and it's advisable to have more oil then normal car nitro fuel because the engine will be much more economical. If you can't get the engine to fire then check that the plug is glowing a bright orange and that there's definitely fuel getting through the carb.

Traxxas will tell you that the 3.3 needs at least 20% nitro to run. Nitro advances the timing. Dennis

Raising compression and hot plug should do the trick.

No glow engine needs nitro to run, they'll just run a bit better with nitro seeing the compression is set (low) for it. With raised compression my son's car is now as fast as the other similar cars using 25% nitro. It was nearly as quick before the mod too .

A couple of days ago I ran an engine with 6:1 compression (much lower than what's used in cars) on zero nitro and it started first flick every time.

That's what I'm trying to say. The way the is engine is set up you need nitro. Find the right size shims (call Traxxas) and shim the head until it works. But you will lose power. Dennis

Its my understanding you want to remove the shims..... not add.

Maybe I've misunderstood what you meant but you'd said they wouldn't run. Period.

What I'm saying is that they will run on zero nitro, and run very well too. No, you won't win a World Championship but for average running around and even club racing it's quite adequate even with an unmodified engine.

In the OP's case, no one else in his country will be using nitro either so they'll all be on a level playing field anyway. His problem with starting isn't because of having no nitro but something else. That's why I mentioned that the methanol itself could be bad, or there's a blockage in the fuel line, needles not set properly....

No... Actually as recommended by Traxxas the 3.3 can run on 10% 20% & 33%. I am lookin at my Revo manual as we speak..

If it will run on as little as 10% you can tune it down to 0% by raising compression - if the instructions mention nothing about removing head shims to do it.

Downunder is correct, there isn't a hobby motor out there that requires nitromethane. It is true nitromethane does help time the ignition - but nothing out there is that radical of a motor that is manufactured.

A hot plug and the thinnest shim available (or cut one of .001" K&S brand brass shim stock) just for sealing is a good place to start.

Running just alky and oil needs a good hot plug...there is no Nitro to help add oxygen, and keep your glow starter charged up good or use a power panel where you can adjust your heat.

Don't believe it can't be done, it can and its not hard.

Remove the shims and find the hottest plug you can. That should get you started assumiing the methanol is good. you may have to raise the compression ratio a bit more to extract maximum power but don't let anybody tell you it can not be done.
