Welcome new Raptor pilot! Nice hobby shop!!

Looks like a fine build and yes its more fun with bigger engine. I am flying .52NT and I consider it just adequate.

I am looking forward to more stick time with this bird. I just got a receiver upgrade as a gift (AR6200) and I want to put on some bigger wheels - but the wheels I got need drilling out and the rear gear wire is some odd size - guess I need a metric drill bit...

Got my motor running good though and have a handful of stock glow plugs and several quarts of fuel to burn so I got get 'er up!!

Yeah that sound she makes at WOT on a low pass is just sweet music to meeeee "ROAR with a Whooosh..."

Hello folks!

So I have been following this thread for about three weeks now and figured it was time to join in. Like most of you, I too have purchased this airplane. I however, have NOT had the chance to fly it yet or let alone see it as i am curently deployed. I have bairly any xp flying airplanes at all, the one plane that I do have is an avistar wich is obviously a very forgiving trainer. My fear is that the engine that comes with the rtf version is too small. I am looking for some info as to what engine i should purchase to make this pig fly. Looks to me that most folks are puting o.s. 61's in it and are saying thats a good fit. also, i DO NOT plan on flying this thing alone there is a instructor back home that is coaching me through the growing planes.

Thank you for Serving! Approximately where / what is your deployment?

This bird is laughable to call a trainer. As a newbie, I was pretty much overwhelmed. I destroyed my first ARF because I set the Flaps wrong in my radio (DX7) and hit the switch on a slow landing approach. Programming error - I mixed in some up elevator, should have been down (or NONE!) and she stalled on approach, nosed in from 50' or so, breaking the fuselage in half and mangling one wing. If not for the wing, I could've replaced just the fuse for $75, but Wing Sets are $100 so I just got another ARF. That was after several hard landings and minor repairs trying to learn this thing. Fortunately, all other components survived as she crashed into a soft plowed field.

I have penciled in next Sunday morning to get more stick time with 'er. That means prep work on Saturday - charge batteries, check for all tools and parts, glow stuff. Its really a labor of love to get 'er out to the flight line, unlike all my electrics which are pretty much Grab and Go. Ah well... They don't have the raw power and sound of the Raptor though heheh Today I am flying my TREX 450V2. Small and buzzy but very fun to fly. I've learned it up to flying nice big 8's even with some wind. If I can handle this heli, I know I can master landing this Raptor...

Edit: Made some progress last night. I got my AR6200 rcvr installed and tested in my Raptor. That freed up my AR6000 for my CAP 580 FlatOut build.

thank so much for your serving I wanted to be A pilot both hands, feet and back are bad
I went with the EVO 52 bolts right in no problems ,10 x 6 prop with flaps , my CG is 6 3/4" to 7 " back
just fly it like a jet ( like a race car around the oval ) give your self room when turning keep speed up
should be alot of fun .

so i broke down and bought the gms .61. it went in without too much cursing. (you gotta talk to it)

anyways i did have to add weight to get it within cg range im at forward most point. 5 3/4 i believe. i also reduced my flaps a little. once i get this engine tuned all the way. its been awhile for 2 strokes.

flap servos are no problem
one normal one reverse
or 2 normal and one wire to reverse the one servo very easy

I use mine for take off and not on landings

I just recently an F-22 PTS NIB for not much more than a trainer box could be had. I needed the transmitter for buddy box (tired of constantly resetting the servo direction and trims between 3 different students) and the engine as a spare for the club trainer, which leaves me an airframe to play with. From experience I know the plane would have poor performance with a .45 trying to fly 7-1/2 pounds on such a low aspect ratio wing (no training aides on this plane!), so some changes are in order.

I’m changing the receiver out and will use a Futaba 7C, so the flaps will function on a rotary knob, not a switch. I’m still indecisive about the engine. I have an old K&B .61 (late 70’s vintage with Perry carb) that has a few bench runs on it that I could use, and it doesn’t look much larger than the Evolution that is currently on it. But since this is an older engine, it won’t have the power of the new .61’s, so I’m also considering either an OS .55 AX or OS .61 FX. I’m guessing the K&B and OS .55 will have about the same power, but the K&B may have the edge on torque.

I’m probably going to change the landing gear out. Use a Dubro unit for the front and bend new rears to have them angled back. I hope to get a 1” to 1-1/2” more ground clearance to swing a 12” prop, and fair in the intakes similar to the ones in the picture posted by MinnFlyer.

Here’s a few questions for you guys who have moded yours.

Has anybody installed a larger fuel tank? It doesn’t look like there is a lot of area in there to install a larger tank beyond the 11 ounce tank H9 installed, so I may be stuck with limited flights.

Does the OS .55 fit the stock engine mount, or require a new one like the K&B or .61FX will?

How much vertical will the OS .55 allow?

I’m still unsure of which way to go with the engine (.61 FX is only $10.00 more than a .55 AX, has more power but weighs more, but I have the K&B .61). It would nice to be able to use the stock mount if possible too. Since have a couple of planes on the table right now to finish, it’ll be a few weeks before I have this one ready to fly – just want to get everything lined up for an easier assembly.

The .55 should fit the stock mount just fine, the .61 will require a new mount and possibly drilling new holes in the firewall as they are wider as well. You will notice an increase in power with the .55 over the stock motor. I've always wanted to try a APC12.25X3.75 on a plane like this. On my twist 40 which is about 7lbs with a Evo.52, it will go vertical a little over half throttle and has excellent speed as well. Blows away a 11X7 and 11X6 or even a 10X7, on the twist anyway. When I first got the plane it had a Magnum .52XLS and it was way to much for the twist with the same prop. It was definitely a speed motor. Some one should try it with the 12.25X3.75 and report how it does. I don't have any other 40 size planes or I would try it myself.

Hogflyer

With my Evo .52 I need to first start loops with a little dive to make them big and clean. Vertical is pretty limited. This plane is a bit heavy and draggy - don't expect too much and she'll deliver. Keep the nose down, speed up and fly 'er like a jet.

I purchised the F22 a few weeks ago RTF with sim and all for under $200.00 Im also new to RC Flying with very little time in the air but have done ok with the Thunder Tiger 60 trainer. My instructor had the control of my F22 we coudnt get the trainer to work for some reason and i told him ide like to see it fly anyways to take it up on his on but needless to say it only cartwheeled on the run way so now 18 stitches later and a webra 50 engine on it with 11X7 or 11X6 Airscreew prop im wondering about sending it up again. The question i have is should it be done with all the traineing gear on it or should I just wait till im able to put a SuperTiger 61 on it all im likeing is the motor mount I all so installed 3.25 Tires on the landing gear.I myself will probley wait till I have more time with the Thunder Tiger befor I try flying this so called Trainer from what ive read sofare I dont no what to call the F22 a bird or junk but ide sure like to see it in the air
