Hey Guys
I was just able to afford to buy some gas for my old Hobby Van to make it out to the flying field to fly my F-22 Raptor. My usual flying buddy couldn't make it out in the 100 degree heat, so I was able to get another RC member to video my flight.
I was doing some low flyby's, it's not the best video, but it's something. Next time will be better.

Enjoy, Jim Stratton

P.S I like this plane so much, I bought two more ARF kits, and another EV. 52 motor to go into my next bird.

Regards, Jim S.

Yeah, there is something about it, huh? I'll not get another ARF but I want to get lots of milage out of this one.

YEah Hangar 9! A.k.a. USARMYMANGANA on YouTube - welcome to the group! Glad you accepted my invite! Bummer about not getting local support in Germany, but good luck on your rebuild. Yes try to get your gloves on a simulator!! No more death spirals allowed for you!!

No ops for flight around here for a few days, perhaps this weekend...

I fixed my spinner - Note: The Great Planes 2" Nylon Spinner is a fit for this plane. The black one actually looks cool too. Still trying to get my son to deliver the last couple vids...

First flight on my Raptor yesterday.... Wasn't sure what to expect but EVERYTHING WENT GREAT!!!!

I still have mine set up with full flaps and droops. Prop is a two blade APC 10/6. I'm trying to understand where all the bad rap came from on. It may not be the "easiest trainer" to start out with but it's not THAT bad. Before I go out next time, I'll increase aileron throw, replace the 2.75" wheels with 3" for prop clearance. I'm sure it won't be long before the droops are gone and the flaps are set to zero. It's a big hit at the field and a ball to fly.

I'm not a beginer pilot but was amazed at how easy it was to fly.

Well mine is a blast to fly also. I have two extra servos in mine two for the elevators and two for the flaps. Moved the rudder servo forwards a little and checked balance. This way maybe later on I will try elevons to see if that increases roll rate. I took off the SK50 and put an old MDS 46 with a apc 10/6 on her and boy does she scoot. not real fast but pleasently fun to fly. Tried the flaps and was surprised on how fast it slowed down. Nearly lost it once but kicked the flaps off and saved it. Landing were fast caused I didn't want to use the flaps but it still is a blast to fly. Later I will try to master the flaps and greatly inprove my landings

Oh, usarmymagana my friend, are we doomed to make every single mistake imagineable with this bird? Ok, this is a big reminder to do our due diligence before every flight. A dead stick Raptor is not a safe thing!

I just got a freebie from Tower in my last order - its a safety voltage LED indicator for the flight battery. Its very small and light. I plan to install it such that the LEDs will shine through the Ultracote skin near the battery compartment, so I will always know its not a dead or dying pack. Would not have helped in this last case but it might save a crash later...

Carry on! Just don't hit anybody with a F-22!!

I have been using a APC 10 x 6 prop but for my next flight I am trying a APC 10 x 7. Slightly more 'bite', perhaps more thrust, perhaps less RPM. Others use a APC 11 x 6 with good results too.

Hey everybody,
I'm new to this thing all together. I got brought into this hobby because of this raptor. I always wanted to do this and when I saw a raptor on ebay and got it for $225 shipped I was in. This was in the winter, they're even cheaper now. And I had done some research, and saw the bad reviews, but the couple of good ones that said you can make it work with a few mods were enough to talk myself into it.

I abandoned the idea of it being a trainer and bought a typical one at an auction and am doing well with it. So now I'm starting to look at getting this lemon in the air, I'm not going to give up on it.

I knew I had to upgrade the engine, and was planning on the os 55. After some more research it seemed I would need to go with a 61fx and deal with the mods. So I bought a new 61fx on ebay. Now after going back to this site and looking at the additional posts, it looks like a 61 could be underpowered too. Now I'm thinking a 75ax, but that's more money and can i sell the 61 for what I have in it? maybe a tuned pipe on the 61, but now you're up to the price of a 75.

I also have some questions about how to reinforce the firewall, front landing gear etc. I see some people have install new gear, bent on the back, better front etc. I was also wondering what size wheels to get for prop clearance. I was thinking 3.25" or 3.5". I still have time, because I'm still going to stick with the trainer for awhile longer. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Oh, on some other forums people have put washer on the bottom bolts of the engine mount to decrease down-thrust, and said it made it a new plane, anybody try this?

I'm not at all sure how all the bad rap surfaced on this plane. I put mine together using the stock engine, flap setting and droops installed. All I did was replace the three blade prop with a two-blade 10/6 APC and install 3" wheels for clearance on our grass runway. The plane flies great.... and is very easy to handle. I like it so much, I bought another just in case something happens to this one. You can't beat the price they're going for on Ebay. I've recently moved the flaps up to neutral and removed the droops. I still have the stock engine and it flies even better than before. I can't imagine wanting more out of what we're calling a trainer.

That .61fx should be great - I would keep it. Bigger engines are heavier and balance becomes more of an issue. She already needs a heavy ass to balance a .52nx.

Interesting idea about the downthrust - my engine is mounted to minimize it but no washers. May try it if I have another crap landing.

Check previous posts - my mod for beefing up the steering bulkhead is still rock solid after many crap landings.

In other news,

I just finished up the Power Panel mod for my Great Planes field box. Now I got power handy and direct for an electric fuel pump, my Sullivan starter, and a variable Glow starter that I can adjust to get just the right amount of starting heat on these HAN3011 plugs. A current meter also flags potential plug problems before take off. Very nice.

Side note - I don't plan on it, but if bad luck strikes and I trash this ARF, I will take the surviving components and put them in this:

That Bobcat 50 takes the same engine I have up with a 51" wingspan and the whole bird weighs less than 6 pounds!! No flaps needed!
