Flight Report, F-22 Sortie #12 Time: 09:30 Weather: Warm and calm. Variable light wind, mostly from the West (which is a cross-wind for us). Fuel: Fresh 10% Tower Power Prop: Balanced APC 10 x 7 Plug: Used HAN3011, tested Good Flaps: 1.2" down Takeoff: Never has been a problem here, off paved 100 yard runway. In-Flight: Engine behaving like an angel. Nice low idle, pure turning up to WOT. Did some loops and rolls. Then, practiced slowing down and flaring at 100' altitude. With the increased Elevator throw I programmed, I could see she was easier to flare and slow down. Landing: This has been the major challenge for me - but today, WE NAILED IT!!! Perfect flare and touchdown right down the middle, and taxied back to the pit area, then clean engine shutdown. I saluted the two old timers watching me and they cheered! WOOT!!! After that, I took a break then flew my electric Mini Edge 540. Nice touch-and-go's. Nice inverted flight. BIG FUN and easy, this one! Sortie #13 Same as above but the crosswind was too much for us. When you apply rudder control to the Raptor, she does weird things - Adverse Coupling its called. We landed in rough - NO DAMAGE!!! Woo hoo!!! The Mini Edge had little problem landing in the crosswind. The rudder performs as you expect. Sortie #14 Same as above, but the landing was better. A little bouncy, and not very pretty, but she did not scuff her wings or prop. Taxied back to pit area (I LOVE TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS!!!) and clean shutdown. Took a break and did more Mini Edge work. Great fun! Sortie #15 As above but the sound of the engine changed suddenly while in-flight!! DANG!! Ok, what to do? Started lining up for an approach - she is sputtering!! Not good!! Ok, she sounds like she could die any second. Is she out of fuel? I set the timer for 7 min, but this should leave me with almost a half tank when done. Rather than risk a dead-engine landing somewhere I could not predict, I brought her in - a little hot, but I had little choice. She bounced 3 times then went into the rough. I managed to keep her flat. Carried her to the pit area... Inspection: NO DAMAGE!!! Great!! Wait, what is this??!?! The muffler is half off again!!! Grrr... Yep, one screw was completely out and dangling there, and the other was way loose. Those screws spun out despite LOCKTITE. And of course the gasket was blown out... Well it was a pretty freakin successful day! I will address the muffler issue back at the lab. I think I might run long bolts all the way through, then cap with aircraft nuts... ??? Cleanup took AN HOUR. She was covered in thick oil and dirt. Yuck. GREAT DAY!!! WOOT!!!!
